How beautiful and functional the curtains will look depends largely on the way they are attached. Modern interior design has a choice: from options with a special curtain tape to do-it-yourself curtains with grommets.

Types of curtains

Eyelets are not suitable for all types of curtains. Visually, they look practical, aesthetically pleasing and attractive. But in order to choose the appropriate option, let’s consider the features for each type.

Curtains with eyelets

Thick blackout curtains are the main finishing touch in window design. Due to the eyelets, a natural gathering is formed on the canvas, which gives a special look when using silk and satin fabrics. In the interior it is most often combined with tulle. Correctly selected curtains increase the space and height of the ceiling, and smooth vertical lines give an authentic decorative effect.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like any type of curtain, eyelet curtains have their advantages and disadvantages.

pros Minuses
It's very easy to move and they don't stick. They do not allow you to make multi-layer curtains on one cornice.
They hold tightly to the ledge and do not slip off it.
Easy to take off and put back on.
They create smooth and beautiful folds and allow you to adjust their depth.
They retain their original appearance for a long time.

Two cornices for tulle and curtains

Creating a unique and comfortable atmosphere in a living room requires direct consideration of the type of textile and the option for attaching it to the cornice. Often, to save space, one cornice with two slats is installed. You can hang tulle and curtains on them at the same time.

It is also possible to create unique combinations with tucks, tucks, and voluminous folds. Curtains can also be placed on one curtain tube, but only on condition that one of them will have a purely decorative function (for example, they will not be closed at night).

For such cases, models of the combined type remain relevant: when sewing involved fabrics of different shades and textures. Less common are completely identical options for tulle and curtains. They are a complete set and are not sewn together.

What kind of cornice do you need?

There is a wide range of curtain rods with grommets - a variety of designs, colors, materials and the presence of decorative elements. Such a variety of choices, on the one hand, makes life easier, and on the other hand, makes you think and choose an individual option that will take into account all the features of the interior.

  • Consider the diameter of the cornice and the hole so that the curtain moves easily and freely.
  • You should not attach the cornice too high; you should leave a distance between the structure and the ceiling so that the curtain does not deform.
  • If desired, the color of the cornice can be combined with the shade of the eyelets.
  • When choosing a style, it is important to consider the shape and decorative component of the cornice. So for modern styles, such as minimalism or hi-tech, simple models without any additions are suitable. And for classic or ethnic styles, it is worth taking into account the characteristic features of the styles and adding accents to complete the stylish look of the room.

Folds with drapes

Before you start sewing curtains, you should decide what volumes of drapery are acceptable for you, as well as how many folds there will be and at what depth. You can also use the suggested photo ideas in this matter if it turns out to be difficult to decide on this issue yourself. You also need to decide on the size of the grommets. After all, the width of the lining, with the help of which the shape and cornice diameter is maintained, depends on this.

You should calculate how much fabric you will need. If you like a lot of folds that are deep enough, you should fold 2 window lengths with a few centimeters left for finishing. The length is chosen, as a rule, to the floor, or longer. Add five centimeters to the length to fold the curtain at the bottom, and also to place a ribbon at the top, which is sewn or wrapped. Tape allows fabrics to last longer and also helps keep their shape. If you prefer not too many folds, you should take 1.5 window openings. To fold on the sides, leave fifteen centimeters for both sides.

Features of choosing eyelets

The appearance of eyelets depends on many factors - material, shape, size, color and decorative coating. Such diversity allows them to be used in almost all interior styles.

For curtains in calm colors, fittings with decorative ornaments are preferable. A good option would be gold or silver. To add luxury to the interior, rhinestones or imitation leather are often used. For curtains in bright colors, it is better to choose simpler and more restrained colors.

When choosing material for rings, you should pay attention not only to the appearance, but also to the technical characteristics. There are not many varieties of material, but the right choice will allow you to preserve the curtains during the next wash and you will enjoy their beauty for a long time.

Metal eyelets are the most practical and will last a long time maintaining their original appearance. In addition, they successfully harmonize with modern styles - minimalism, loft or hi-tech. Rings made of brass and steel, when washed together with the curtain, can quickly lose their original appearance, so it is advisable to remove them before this procedure. Stainless steel rings are resistant to corrosion, but are quite expensive.

Plastic or resin is the most common option for grommets. They are distinguished by an affordable price and a large selection of colors, which allows you to choose rings to match your interior style. When moving, the curtains do not create noise, do not scratch the cornice, and are easily washed together. Suitable for thinner fabrics.

Wooden eyelets are less durable than plastic ones and can become deformed when washed and dried. An eco-friendly material like wood looks very impressive and is often used when decorating interiors in Provence or country style.

How to choose the color of the eyelets?

The world of design rules has clear recommendations on the beneficial combination of colors, their mutual harmony or disharmony, color therapy, and even the effect of colors on human health. This has a direct bearing on creating a healthy microclimate in the room.

Green, summer curtain color

From the point of view of color harmony, for example, for brown fabrics, beige, blue or gray eyelets are suitable (according to the color compatibility table). In practice, you can use eyelets with gold plated or having a silvery steel tint.

Against the background of brown curtains, rings with artificially applied blackening or the vintage trend that is fashionable today will not seem pretentious.

Gray eyelets are universal. They will harmoniously combine with almost any color of curtains. True, some may seem rustic.

Ideal sun protection

It should be noted that light-colored eyelets visually increase the size of the holes and make them larger. Therefore, dark versions of curtains are rarely equipped with such details. They look organic with light, light curtains, especially those with small multi-colored prints.

Edging the holes for the curtain rod in bright contrasting colors (yellow, red, green, etc.) is acceptable in cases of curtain shades located in the same color scheme . For example, pink eyelets on a burgundy fabric base.

Orange color can lift your spirits

The second version of such combinations is in the avant-garde or boho style, where everything bright, contrasting, and attracting attention is welcomed. However, the window should not contain too many color contrasts.

The opposite view on the selection of eyelets is that the fastening method should be completely invisible . In this case, the illusion is created that the cornice penetrates the curtain itself, and not specially equipped holes. Such naturalness and simplicity benefit such design styles as hi-tech, minimalism, Bauhaus and others.

What do curtains look like in the interior?

An interesting image of the interior is created not only by decorating walls, furniture or carpet, but also thanks to correctly selected curtains. And the eyelets will become the final accent in the design of the window opening.

Curtains for the hall with eyelets

Long curtains will decorate the living room and create a stunning visual effect with graceful and neat folds. Bright and rich colors of curtains are suitable for a living room in a modern style. It is better to match the eyelets to the color of the decorative elements in order to maintain color harmony.

Photo of curtains with eyelets for the kitchen

The best option for a kitchen window. They can be short or long, plain, with a pattern or floral print. In the kitchen, the practicality and convenience of eyelets is felt most of all. For small areas, short curtains up to the window sill are suitable, and for spacious kitchens or for a kitchen-living room it is better to use long curtains that reach the floor.

To decorate a window with a balcony door, linen or acrylic curtains are suitable, which are not subject to fading and staining.

Design of curtains with eyelets for the bedroom

In a bedroom interior, such curtains will create coziness and emphasize the stylish design of the room. Plus, vertical folds visually increase the height of the room, so this is an excellent solution for a small bedroom. It is better to select eyelets to match the decorative elements of the bedroom and in a calm color scheme. Combined models look good.

Curtains with eyelets for a children's room

For a window design in a nursery, this mounting option would be ideal - the eyelets move very easily along the cornice, which will allow you to easily move the curtains apart and close them. You need to choose natural materials, high quality and durable.

Short models will be a salvation for the room of a baby who is just starting to take his first steps. In addition to practical value, such a solution will visually increase the space, thereby freeing up free space.

Which curtain fabric to choose?

Eyelets are used with all types of fabric, from the densest and heaviest to the thinnest and lightest.

Curtain curtains

If you need to create a spectacular and complete picture, then you should pay special attention to the choice of curtain fabric.

The photo shows a living room with grommet curtains on the bay windows.

Blackout

Excellent light protection. Blackout is a hypoallergenic, wear-resistant, stain- and fading-resistant fabric.

Linen

Eco-friendly, natural. Linen curtains will immerse the interior in a rustic and serene atmosphere.

Jacquard

Patterned, dense and durable material with an unusual texture and an average level of light transmission. They look incredibly beautiful and practical.

Silk

Luxurious fabric that shimmers in the light. Windows with silk curtains look elegant and neat and emphasize good taste.

Velvet

Heavy fabric with a voluminous texture, soft and pleasant to the touch. Perfectly retains heat in the room. More suitable for spacious rooms and looks good in modern and classic styles.

Gozhka

Fabric with a rough texture reminiscent of burlap, practically does not wrinkle. Curtains made from this fabric look very unusual and are a real find for country and eco-style.

Fabrics for tulle

Many people believe that tulle is not suitable for this type of fastening, since it has a very light and delicate structure. In fact, such curtains look quite impressive.

How to calculate the entire structure

The presence of folds requires the use of more fabric on the curtains. The minimum ratio of the length of the cornice to the width of the canvas is 1:2.

But if you don’t plan to surprise guests with even and voluminous folds, then you can take less fabric and install fewer fasteners.

In spacious rooms, voluminous folds look very elegant. To achieve this you need to reduce the distance between the eyelets.

When calculating fabric consumption, you should multiply the length of the cornice by a factor of 2-2.5.

Additionally, it is necessary to provide extra fabric for the side hems. The reserve must be at least 8 cm on each side. The hem at the bottom will be 5 cm.

When installing the rings into the fabric, a strip 3 cm wide will form on top of the fastenings. This must be taken into account when determining the size of the curtains.

It is necessary to take an even number of rings. If the number is odd, you will have a problem - one of the edges of the curtain will turn into the room. You won't be able to add an additional ring.

The distance between the rings affects the number and size of folds. A large gap gives a large fold. The average distance between the centers of the eyelets is 15-22 cm, and it is advisable to fasten the first ring at a distance of 7 cm from the edge.

But at the same time, you need to avoid placing the grommet on the side bend.

To calculate the number of rings, you need to subtract twice the distance from the center of the first ring to the edge of the curtain from the width of the curtain.

The result obtained must be divided by the selected interval between the eyelets and added 1.

How to do it yourself?

Purchased curtains are a good option, but sometimes a situation arises when you want the interior to be individual, but there is no desire to overpay. In this case, you can sew curtains with eyelets yourself. Let's look at a step-by-step master class on sewing curtains.

What tools will you need?

  • fabric for curtains;
  • eyelets;
  • grommet tape;
  • scissors;
  • pencil;
  • iron;
  • sewing machine.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. Fabric measurements and calculation:
      We measure the length of the cornice, multiply the resulting value by a coefficient (1.5 for tulle, 2-2.5 for curtains).
  2. We calculate the length of the hems and allowances: the bottom edge is 8-10 cm, the top edge is about 25 cm with a margin, the side edges are a total of 3-4 cm.
  3. We calculate the distance: soft waves, we attach eyelets every 15 cm, if you need deep and relief waves, we take a step of 22 cm. Intermediate options are allowed, it’s all up to your imagination.
  4. Preparation of material. Before attaching the eyelets to the curtains, be sure to sew the eyelet tape to the fabric or fold the fabric itself to seal the attachment point.
      We fold the upper part of the fabric to the width of the grommet tape, and steam the folded area with an iron.
  5. We cut off the sides with a margin (approximately equal to the width of the fold).
  6. Next, we straighten the fabric, and place the tape along the upper fold and fasten it with an iron.
  7. Fabric marking:
      Based on the calculations above, we mark points on the tape;
  8. We attach tailor's pins to each point;
  9. Mark the outline of the hole on the tape along the inner circle of the eyelets.
  10. Fastening eyelets:
      We cut out holes along the marked contours with a margin of 2 mm;
  11. We snap the rings on both sides or press them using a press.

For clarity, you can watch the video instructions:

Fabric processing

Prepare the edges. Fold 2 cm inside out at the top and iron. The next piece of hem is equal to the size of the special tape (it can be replaced with non-woven fabric).

A pre-measured strip is placed into the resulting pocket. The finished set is carefully ironed.

It is recommended to machine stitch along the edge of the hem at the top. After this, do not forget about the design of the edges at the bottom and sides.

Design ideas

In modern design there are many interior styles and for a harmonious image it is better to think through all the details. Therefore, designers often use grommets for the finishing touch in interior design.

Curtains with eyelets are often used in combination with lambrequins. This decorative element complements the window design. The shape of the lambrequin can be straight or with a figured cut. In the interior, this type of decoration such as a lambrequin on grommets will not leave anyone indifferent.

Another popular addition to curtains are tiebacks - the canvas is draped into beautiful folds and secured on both sides. They help you approach interior design creatively, and even the simplest curtains will become stylish and unique.

Color spectrum

The standard approach to choosing the color of curtains in the living room is to take a fabric that approximately matches the main shade in the interior design. To prevent drapes or curtains from blending in with the wallpaper, the material for them should be a couple of shades darker or lighter. So, curtains in coffee shades or ivory color will go well with warm beige wall decoration. In a cold palette, neutral gray would be appropriate.

However, contrasting combinations are also in fashion. Bright patchwork fabrics are suitable for the boho style. Red, brown, yellow tones are appropriate in country style. A catchy ornament will be good in a room with ethnic motifs. In Provence and shabby chic styles, it is good to combine pastel shades: chocolate, delicate turquoise, olive, lavender, terracotta. Baroque and Rococo require wine, burgundy, dark emerald, cobalt curtains made of thick, heavy fabrics.
