Dark curtains - modern ideas and unusual interior design options using dark-colored curtains

Quite often, those who have to decorate interiors are somewhat biased towards dark-colored curtains. It is generally accepted that dark curtains visually make a room smaller and are best avoided.

Indeed, you need to carefully select curtains in dark shades, taking into account the size and lighting of the room, the color of the walls and furniture in it, and its purpose. However, if done correctly, such curtains will become a real highlight and will give the room a complete and elegant look.

Curtains of the following shades are considered dark:

  • black curtains;
  • chocolate brown curtains;
  • anthracite, dark gray curtains;
  • wine, Bordeaux;
  • olive green curtains;
  • indigo, blue;
  • and others close to those listed.

When selecting them, you should adhere to a few simple principles, which will be discussed in this article. Follow them - and dark-colored curtains will become a real decoration for the room.

Which room are dark curtains suitable for?

  • This should be a spacious room with a relatively small amount of furniture - a large living room, office, conference room, less often a kitchen or bedroom. As already mentioned, dark curtains visually hide the space, so it is advisable that no more than a third of the room is occupied by furniture. In a small room crowded with furniture, dark curtains will look redundant and inappropriate.
  • A bright room with windows facing south or east, or with bright multi-level interior lighting. In this case, dark curtains will protect the room from excess sunlight and at the same time will look very impressive against the backdrop of a lit window.
  • Room with high ceilings. For such a room (from 3 m and above), dark-colored curtains will be a truly winning solution. If the ceilings are low, then it is advisable to choose curtains not of a single color, but with vertical stripes - they will visually “stretch” the room in height.

There is also an opinion that dark curtains can only be used if the rest of the interior is designed in light colors. Indeed, they can be used as a contrasting element; in this case, it is recommended that the share of dark should be no more than 10% in the color scheme of the room. It is also quite acceptable to choose dark curtains to match the furniture or wall decoration; for example, in a bedroom it will look quite appropriate.

If dark plain curtains seem too strict to you, then you can soften this effect by choosing fabric with a light pattern.

Let's look at examples with photos of several options for interiors with dark curtains.

Variety of forms of modern textiles

There are a huge number of varieties of curtains, among which are:

  1. Multilayer products. They are curtains consisting of several layers of fabric. They can be plain or combine different colors and patterns. Such models look great in the living room or bedroom, especially in a classic style, but they are inappropriate in the kitchen or nursery.
  2. Lambrequins. These are curtains that, in addition to side elements, have top ones. Multi-tiered openwork lambrequins are only appropriate in a classic style, while minimalist ones with rigid structures are also suitable for a modern interior.
  3. Asymmetrical curtains. They can come in a variety of shapes, but only one side of the curtain reaches the floor, and the other can be short or completely absent. They are suitable when you don’t want to overload the interior.
  4. Roller blinds. A modern and practical option. By themselves, they are used in the kitchen, balcony or office, so as not to disturb the laconic lines. But roller blinds can also be hung in the living room, where there is too much sun, by combining them with floor-length curtains.
  5. Short curtains. Look good in the kitchen or dining room. Most often they can be seen in the Provencal style, where a rustic theme is acceptable. They are also sometimes hung in the nursery for practicality and safety reasons. In the living room, similar options will look bad.

Decor ideas

The design in which black curtains are made includes various decorative accessories. Fringes are used as decoration, thread cords with tassels are used for tying, and other types of decorations are used. The colors in which decorative elements are painted are chosen according to taste. From a similar black tone to a rich golden contrast.

Holders

A part that regulates curtains and represents a decorative detail. In the nursery, for dark curtains you can purchase holders made in the shape of images of birds or animals. In the living room they make do with ordinary wooden and plastic fittings. It can also be metal or fabric.

Clamps

The principle of their operation is similar to the familiar clothespins. Clips secure the curtains. Products are made of plastic and metal. Magnetic clips with attached rhinestones look original. There are decorative products that serve to decorate canvases and as fastening curtains to cornices.

Tiebacks

Here too, decorativeness is intertwined with functionality. The tiebacks secure the curtains when they are open. The lighting is adjusted. The material of the grabbers varies. They are made from fabric, lace, and multi-colored ribbons.

The product can be twine, made of leather, brocade, or other materials. Bright beads can serve as an additional decoration. Sometimes pebbles and multi-colored rhinestones act as a replacement. A common decoration for tiebacks for black curtains is embroidery made in gold or silver.

Tassels and fringe

Part for curtains in the form of a thread bundle framed with ribbons. Beads are used for decoration; pebbles and beads are used. The details of the decorations are located either at the bottom of the canvases or they are sewn to the curtains.

Fringe is a classic element. It is fixed along the bottom edge, but can be applied to the side trim. In living rooms, fringe can have a bright, iridescent color.

Curtains for the hall with a balcony

If the layout of the living room provides access to a balcony or loggia, then it is necessary to consider not only the aesthetic side in the selection of curtains, but also the functional one. It is completely inappropriate to use complex multi-layer curtains or long silk curtains. Such options will complicate access to the balcony door. A great option is swing curtains. Can be combined with light tulle, decorated with falling folds. Important - the size of the curtains for a room with a balcony will be much larger than the standard ones.

Do not forget about the design of the windows of the balcony itself. Even expensive fabrics will not help if unshaped, “bare” windows are visible through them. Roman blinds made of thick artificial or natural fabric will be appropriate. Also, the “cafe” style will give the balcony an interesting design, without complicating access to the window sill.

Selection rules

Black curtains add charm to the interior of a room if chosen correctly.

In a small room you can hang short curtains, sewing them using light material that allows light to pass through.

Wall surfaces, ceilings, and furniture should have light colors.

When the fabric of the product is dense, it is necessary to arrange additional lighting in the room.

Black and white

Just above we said that not everyone accepts dark curtains in the interior, but in fact this approach is very popular in the design world today. Dark curtains work well in a light interior as they provide visual contrast, create interesting focal points and complement other strokes of black or taupe in the room.

The more neutral the interior palette, the more magnificent the dark curtains look against this background! The stylish and versatile black and white backdrop they create allows the bright colored accents and artwork that decorate your interior to stand out.

The use of a combination of dark, heavy curtains with light, light and translucent curtains in modern bedrooms has become very popular today. Striking the perfect balance between openness and complete privacy, this stylish combination seems aesthetically appropriate in a room where neutral colors predominate.

Selection of curtains for the hall

Curtains are not just a piece of fabric with drapery in a window opening. The choice of curtains should be taken responsibly.

Important! An incorrectly selected shade or size can ruin the overall impression of even the most stylish room. Before purchasing, you should understand the characteristics of the fabric and choose the appropriate sewing style.

It is also worth paying attention to fashion trends and compliance with the time of year, the location of windows according to the cardinal directions. So for shaded rooms you should not choose thick and heavy curtains; light transparent tulle is enough. An excellent solution would be to choose curtains with a photo pattern. For sunny eastern and southern rooms - thick curtains in rich colors. They will protect from the bright sunrise and midday heat.

In order not to overload the space and prevent bad taste, you should adhere to the following rules:

  • emphasis on the curtain . If the curtain is made in a bright style, complemented by fringe, embossing or large ornaments, then the curtain should only set it off. Transparent tulle in pastel colors will be enough;
  • emphasis on tulle . This option is suitable for spacious rooms oriented to the west or north. Photo printing and catchy patterns should only be emphasized by the simplicity and laconicism of the curtains.

Color of curtains for the hall

When looking for curtains for the hall, of course you will have to choose among a variety of colors and shades. You can be guided only by your taste or look at fashion trends. But one thing remains unchanged. Curtains should complement and harmonize with the overall mood of the living room. They can contrast or smoothly blur the boundaries with the window. Ideally, notes of color or pattern in the curtains should be visible in the upholstery or decorative elements.

Also, do not forget about the importance of orienting the apartment to the cardinal directions. South windows, soaked in the sun, are well shaded with shades of green, turquoise, blue, perhaps even adding lilac. Western and northern windows, which are in twilight most of the day, need warm shades. Choose beige, sand colors and light brown shades.

Curtains in the hall sometimes occupy most of the wall, so their color can overlap the main background. It is worth considering this especially in small rooms. You should not overload the curtains with large patterns; it is better to choose plain models. An exception is the Provence style, which allows even in a compact room the presence of colorful small flowers on the fabric.
