Black and white bathroom: original combinations and the best examples of design, photos

The toilet, like the bathroom, is a place where people spend the most intimate part of their lives. Of course, everyone wants to feel cozy and comfortable in this room. In addition, modern design also dictates its own rules, which forces owners of residential square meters to decorate their apartments in an original way. These factors influence the fact that designers very often began to decorate the toilet in black tones. The advantages of this decor are undeniable.

Benefits of color

Despite the fact that black color may seem too gloomy for some people for the interior of a toilet, if used correctly, you can get a modern and cozy room that will indicate the delicate taste and sense of style of the owner of the house. Black color is calming, so a bathroom in this tone will help you concentrate and wake up in the morning. Black color creates successful combinations with all possible shades. Thanks to this feature, great opportunities open up for apartment owners to create a unique interior.

Red and white bathroom 30 good ideas

Bright, juicy, aggressive red color makes you wary of its use in the interior. However, designers know that with a certain dosage and dilution with other tones, the interior looks advantageous and becomes much more attractive.

Psychologists advise avoiding the use of red for people with an unbalanced psyche or frequent mood swings.

Since the red tint stimulates an increase in emotional level and may even be able to cause aggression.

But red is also associated with passion and pleasure, so it’s not a good idea to not use it in your design at all. Various tricks used by interior specialists will help you use the color red correctly and create perfect harmony.

Basic Rules

To decorate a toilet in black, first of all, you need to know the main rules, which are extremely important to follow if you really want to get a unique bathroom interior.

  • There are many more problems with the black range than with other color variations in decoration, and the requirements for this color are much stricter, so you need to immediately be prepared for any unwanted difficulties.

  • You shouldn’t decorate all the walls exclusively in black. In this case, one law applies: if the room is small, there should be few black surfaces. This is an important consideration in toilet design. One third of the total area of such a room should be dark. For example, you can lay the floor with dark tiles, decorate the walls with the same material, and combine dark tiles with light tiles. You can, on the contrary, cover the walls with dark tiles and make the floor light.

  • If the toilet is large and spacious, then 60-70% of all surfaces can be painted black. A classic restroom has six planes: floor, ceiling and walls. If black was chosen for decoration, then it is better to make the floor and ceiling in light colors, and make all the walls dark. The second decoration option is as follows: the floor and 3 walls are decorated with black tiles, and the ceiling and the last wall are laid out with light cladding decor.

By following these simple rules, you can get the perfect color combination in your restroom.

You should not oversaturate this room with dark colors, otherwise you may end up with a dark, faceless cave.

Impressive contrasts

A classic color combination is the contrast of white walls with black plumbing. Light colors reflect light amazingly and therefore create a great balance for dark tones.

If black color does not dominate the room, then it can be perfectly combined with a bright palette. A black urinal on a green background will look eccentric and stylish. The combination with silver, orange, gold and yellow is also original. And if you are a fan of an aggressive and defiant interior, then give preference to purple or rich red. To create a boring atmosphere, dark gray or blue tones are suitable.

An excellent combination for dark-colored equipment are wood surfaces. And it doesn’t matter what it will be - furniture, walls or some other furnishings.

But if you really want to decorate the entire bathroom in black and put the same toilet there, then know: the room will be devoid of showiness. In this case, taps, mixers and other decorative accessories made of chrome will save the situation. But silver and gold will become the most luxurious companions.

Finish options

A toilet in the tones of a raven wing is a real challenge for the designer. You need to choose the right pair for this color, because it is very easy to ruin a brilliant idea, but not everyone can cope with this task. As interior design professionals have noticed, a dark tone goes perfectly with cream (sand, peach) and white shades - they create the most successful combinations. Black absorbs light, while white and cream, on the contrary, reflect it, that is, these colors will balance the darkness and make the interior “lively” and more harmonious.

However, not all combinations are good; you need to be able to combine shades and play with them correctly.

Today you can get acquainted with the recommendations of the masters, which are worth studying before starting repairs in the restroom.

  • The black and white duet is a classic solution in the interior. It never gets old, looks elegant and attractive. Rich contrast creates a stunning visual effect. But you should be extremely careful, since it is believed that the color of coal has a depressing effect on a person and its excessive use can negatively affect the nervous system.

  • To avoid an overwhelming effect, you need to take moderation and avoid changing black and light colors too often on any surface. Some designers recommend laying tiles in a checkerboard pattern, but in the case of this color scheme this is not entirely the right decision. Laying according to the checkerboard principle can be done in a small area in the restroom (for example, in the area behind the toilet, since this is a small piece of the wall that will not particularly affect the overall impression of the situation in the bathroom).

  • A great option is a combination of colors on the walls. Since there are an even number of them in the toilet, two can be made in black, and the rest in white or cream. Accordingly, colors need to be alternated.

  • Another solution is to divide one wall into two zones (horizontally or vertically). If the horizontal division option was chosen, then it is worth making the lower part of the wall in a dark color, and the upper part in a light color, adding small inclusions in the form of borders, tile inserts, thanks to which the composition will become holistic and unified.

  • If we talk about flooring, it can withstand any transition from black to white. You just need to consider the size of the restroom. If the toilet is small, it is not worth covering the floor with large tiles in a checkerboard pattern. This approach will reduce the size of an already compact bathroom, so small tiles would be the best choice.

  • To make the floor in the toilet visually wider and longer, experts advise using different techniques. As an option, lay the tiles in stripes with alternating colors. For example, red and black stripes will make the room visually larger.

  • The diagonal laying method also has an interesting effect on a person. A toilet designed in this way becomes more voluminous.

  • A trend in recent years has been the way of decorating a restroom with tiles. With this decor you can create interesting compositions reminiscent of a spruce.

It is an undeniable fact that a stronger contrast is provided by a black and white color combination , but if you use cream tiles, then there will not be such a striking difference. As a result, the interior will be calmer and softer. This type of room decoration will have a positive effect on the well-being and mood of the property owners; the advantage is also that you will not have to install a large number of lighting fixtures in the bathroom.

Decor

As a decoration, the best solution would be to use facing tiles with different patterns and ornaments. Tiles with gold, silver or colored patterns are suitable. Also, the darkness of black will be eliminated by a light border or panel.

An overabundance of decor in a small toilet can harm the interior , so it is better to choose a small amount of decorative elements. It is better to dilute the darkness with useful and necessary accessories in the bathroom with glossy and sparkling surfaces (a toilet paper holder or a faucet, if there is a small sink for washing hands).

Choosing a toilet

Currently, buying a toilet does not present any difficulty for buyers, except that due to the large assortment of this type of product, it is sometimes quite difficult to make a choice in favor of one model or another. Modern products have different shapes and bowl depths, toilet seat heights, different installation systems and control methods, as well as colors. You won’t surprise anyone with standard white toilet bowls, which cannot be said about black bowls.

The interior of a bathroom with a black toilet is a truly non-standard solution. An earth-colored bowl does not fit into every style of restroom. However, if you properly design the decor, such an interesting product will be able to highlight the style direction and recreate the necessary atmosphere and flavor. Dark-colored plumbing fixtures fit well into interiors of such styles as high-tech, glamour, and art deco. In a bathroom decorated in a high-tech style, a dark bowl will emphasize the selected extraordinary furnishings, and in art deco and glamorous styles it will reproduce a luxurious atmosphere.

Thus, the main advantage of a black toilet can be called its external “unusuality”. Such a unit in the restroom will not only surprise, but also amaze, because it is not often that you see dark-colored plumbing fixtures in a residential apartment.

To see what interior options there are with a black toilet, see the following video.

The toilet is the smallest room in the apartment and the design rules are different here. I have prepared 7 ideas and a bunch of real photos of stylish toilet interiors.

Design of a toilet in an apartment - 7 rules

It would seem where you can mess up in a room as small as a toilet. But in such an area everything is visible, every detail matters. Let's figure it out.

Toilet - wall-hung only

This is the first most important and ironclad rule - only a wall-hung toilet with installation. Without it, you don’t even have to think about toilet design. Even the most expensive and sophisticated floor-standing toilet is inferior to a wall-hung one in all respects. Differences:

  1. Only the wall-hung toilet has a modern appearance.
  2. There is no ugly silicone joint with the floor or a gap between them.
  3. Because visually the area of the room is estimated by the floor, but the suspended floor does not occupy it, the area seems larger.
  4. Convenient to clean. Dirt does not accumulate behind the toilet and at the joint.
  5. Effectively takes up less space.

A modern toilet design without a wall-hung toilet is impossible. This is the thing on which saving is unacceptable.

Some photos will show regular floor-standing toilets - this is a mistake. These photos are here to illustrate other ideas, I will not return to this.

Hatch in the toilet

This is the second point, without which the toilet design will be of a very low level. The worst thing you can do is use a ready-made white metal hatch. This is a purely rough technical solution, which is unacceptable in the design of a toilet in an apartment.

Correct ways to hide pipes and meters:

  1. Hidden hatch under the tiles.
  2. Furniture doors.
  3. If inexpensive - a painting or a printed photo, a panel, a roller blind.

The latter can be done very inexpensively. And this is already better than a white hatch. Be sure to hide the pipes properly. It is on such nuances that the design of the toilet is built.

Please note that the hidden hatch under the tiles will have dark gaps around the perimeter. To prevent this from being noticeable, the grout of the rest of the tiles should also be dark. Read how to choose tiles and grout color.

No more than 2 colors

The toilet is white. Those. There is always 1 color already. There should be no more than two colors that strongly contrast with white. Otherwise there are too many details for a small toilet without a bathroom. The exception is patchwork and other non-aggressive mixtures, where colors do not dominate and do not attract attention.

I love dark and black colors in the interior, but not in the bathroom, toilet and kitchen. On average, the design of a small toilet looks advantageous in light colors. Everything else is an unjustified risk.

If you still want a bright toilet renovation, read on the combination of colors in the interior.

White, beige, gray, wood shades are the best colors. I wrote in detail in an article about the design of small bathrooms.

Small sink

There are very small sinks specifically for toilets. Being able to wash your hands is very important for a toilet without a bathtub. Otherwise, we come into contact with the door handles of two rooms at once just to get to the sink.

They are so miniature in size that in width they occupy little more than part of the wall with the platband. This is not a design issue, but for practicality I recommend it.

Decorative lighting

There is no need for a bright overhead light in the toilet. We do not need to look at ourselves in the mirror or perform any hygiene procedures. This means you can make decorative lighting and use it as the main one.

One of the modern ideas for renovating bathrooms in 2022 and for the toilet too is to place light sources at the bottom and middle of the room, making them hidden. With this arrangement, they provide a lot of shadows and the interior looks not boring, but at the same time strict. The more textured the tile, the more voluminous and interesting it will look. There are a million ways to embed LED strips, special profiles with a diffuser screen, etc. You can find a place for them even on an area of 2 sq.m.

Decorating a toilet room with a black toilet

In a white, gray or black toilet room, a compact toilet (black) or any other version of the bowl of this shade will look most harmonious. But placing such an accessory against a black wall is unlikely to be a win-win and universal combination. This design will make the bathroom, to put it mildly, uncomfortable. Against the background of black tiles, a toilet of a similar shade will get lost and lose a significant part of its effectiveness.

The optimal solution for the interior would be a black urn against the background of a wall decorated in light colors. If you still want the walls of the toilets to be tiled with black tiles, then take care to create a light accent piece behind the toilet.

Black sanitaryware surrounded by light gray or completely white walls will look advantageous. In this case, the floors should be “checkerboard” - black and white or black.

To make the interior of the toilet room look luxurious, designers recommend creating a tandem of a black toilet and tiles imitating granite, marble or any other stone in achromatic colors.

Toilet renovation - design and tiling

Tile and decorative plaster are the only normal ways to decorate walls in a toilet.

There is a cheap way - repairing the toilet with plastic panels. But the design is absolutely terrible. It’s better to find the cheapest tiles in a neutral color somewhere on sale. This will be a completely different level.

Another opportunity to reduce the cost is wallpaper. Theoretically, they are possible in classical styles, where the wall is divided horizontally. The bottom half is tile, then the border and wallpaper up to the ceiling. But this is where the adequate possibilities for using wallpaper in the toilet end.

The paint doesn't make sense because... The price is close to tiles, but for the toilet it is still worse.

Toilet tile design

Rectangular tiles look best in a toilet. The walls and floor are so small that the square one is bound to have some unsightly undercuts. Another feature: no water gets on the walls and floor, which means you don’t have to worry about salt stains. This means that medium and dark-colored tiles do not necessarily have a contrasting texture.

Otherwise, you should choose tiles of modern design, just like for the bathroom. Great for the toilet:

  1. Porcelain tiles with imitation wood. Especially with deep texture and backlighting.
  2. Light gray for stone and concrete.
  3. Monochrome patchwork (black and white with small patterns).
  4. With interesting geometry: five and hexagonal, with a broken pattern.
  5. White boar. Yes, this ubiquitous tile is relevant even in the toilet, although it has already become boring.

Mosaic is also well suited, especially in Khrushchev. In addition to its small size, the toilet in the Khrushchev building also has corners that are not corners - they are rounded. If you fix this with plaster along the beacons, it will eat up the already small space. The only way to properly finish such round corners is with mosaics. That’s why it can be seen so often in high-quality repairs of toilets in Khrushchev-era buildings, although it is not humane in terms of money.

The tiles should imitate natural materials.

If the tile has a bright unnatural color and does not look like anything natural, then this is a bad option. It’s impossible to come up with anything more modern and at the same time long-lasting than wood and stone.

Keep it simple. The design of the toilet should be simple.

2 ideal combination options: 2 types of light tiles on all walls, or light on the side walls and medium in brightness (beige, gray) on the central wall with the toilet. The latter is the most popular option. Visually it expands the space a little. But you shouldn’t use a completely dark one either - the contrast is too strong with the white color of the toilet.

Toilet tiling

Laying tiles in the toilet is even more important than its design: ordinary inexpensive tiles, when laid correctly symmetrically without small trims, will already give a decent and neat appearance. Most of all, the interior of the toilet depends on the wall behind the toilet. She is the first one that catches our eye and we see her entirely. Hence the rule:

The wall behind the toilet should be completely symmetrical.

This applies to the location of the toilet and flush button exactly in the center, as well as the layout of the tiles. There are 2 options depending on what kind of hatch you have:

  1. If the hatch is hidden under the tiles, then the entire layout is built from it. The hatch is located exactly in the center, with equal cuts on the sides.
  2. If the pipes are hidden in any other way, then the standard rule for cutting tiles (below) is used.

Algorithm for laying tiles in a toilet with proper trimming:

  1. We measure how many solid tiles fit on the wall and subtract 1 from this number.
  2. If the result is even and zero in the center of the wall, we place a seam between the tiles; if it is odd, the middle will be solid.

In a specific photo:

Here the wall is finished incorrectly and there are narrow cuts on the sides. Let's apply the rule. It would take 3 whole tiles and trim to fit on the wall. 3-1=2. 2 - even. This means that in the center of the wall it is necessary to place a seam between two whole ones. Like that:

This rule does not apply to wood-look porcelain tiles. It should be laid like real floor coverings with an offset of half or a third of the board (deck laying). About the layout of tiles in the bathroom.

In general, there is a clear trend toward consolidation; a separate toilet is becoming less and less common. But if you have a large number of family members, leave it as is, the main thing is to follow the advice from this material. Good luck with the renovation!

Creating an interesting design for a toilet is not easy, especially if the room is small in size. Using black allows you to create a design in a modern or classic style without much worry. Dark trim or plumbing looks noble and unusual. Many interior styles can be realized with black.

Basic Rules

Dark colors are quite capricious in the interior. They must be used in compliance with certain rules:

  1. you need to decide what exactly will be black – finishing or plumbing;
  2. It’s not worth decorating everything in one shade; the smaller the toilet is, the less dark it should be;
  3. black must be combined with other, lighter shades;
  4. to soften the color you need to use bright details or decorative items;
  5. Scratches and dust on dark-colored surfaces are very noticeable.

Black “eats” the light, making the room darker. Therefore, you need to take care of bright lamps so that the interior does not oppress. It is worth considering that the finish can be matte, glossy and metallic. You need to use one type, but you can combine textures.

Glossy surfaces reflect light more and compensate for darkness, while matte surfaces require more light sources.

Disadvantages of “gloomy” plumbing

Not everyone likes the black toilet because of its moody color. Most people are not completely confident that they will be able to create a favorable environment for such an unusual accessory, because designing a room with such plumbing fixtures is a rather difficult task.

Another disadvantage of black sanitary ware is that it is quite finicky to care for. The water contains minerals that leave light-colored deposits. They are not visible on a classic white toilet, but on a black one they immediately catch the eye. Not every user is ready to wash and dry the sink every day.

Color combinations

A plain dark toilet looks gloomy. You need to choose the right combination to dilute the color. The simplest option is white and cream shades. Many designers use just this combination to add light to the room. It is worth following the advice of experts on combining colors.

  • Black and white is considered a classic solution and looks elegant. Contrast looks vibrant, but can be tiring. Psychologists believe that the combination of pure white with rich black affects the nervous system and causes irritability.

  • You should not lay out black and white or cream in a checkerboard pattern on a large section of the wall. In this case, the interior will not be harmonious, but annoying. The technique can be used in small areas - behind the toilet, for example.

  • The combination of colors on the walls looks good. Two are laid out with black tiles, and the remaining ones are decorated with light ones. It is worth decorating in a single color those that are located opposite, as if one after the other.
  • Black harmonizes with some shades of red . A good solution is to divide the wall into two parts with a horizontal line. The bottom should be decorated in black. Borders and inserts will allow you to visually combine two colors into a single composition.

  • The floor in a small room can be laid out by alternating small tiles . Large squares will visually make the room smaller.

  • Alternating white and black stripes make the floor visually larger.

  • The diagonal layout of small tiles visually increases the volume of the room.

  • The combination of black and cream looks softer than with white. At the same time, beige shades also successfully reflect light.

  • The red wall behind the toilet, black walls and white floor and ceiling look interesting . With the right lighting, a room becomes larger and more interesting.

  • When using tiles in black and red tones, you should install only white sanitary ware. Otherwise, the room will look too gloomy and dark.

  • It is acceptable to use bright colors, but with caution and in small quantities.

Experts still recommend decorating the walls, floor and ceiling with a combination of black and white or beige. To add brightness, fittings and decor are used. It is worth noting that walls can be covered not only with tiles, but also with plaster. In this case, a wide selection of textures opens up.

Varieties

Both white and black types of toilets include different types of designs.

The most popular types of dark plumbing include several models:

  • Floor-standing designs involve attaching the device directly to the floor. They can have a monoblock design, in which the toilet body directly includes the device’s cistern. Separate models, on the contrary, imply that the tank is located separately from the main body.
  • An equally popular option is the bidet type . This small-sized item with built-in electronic functions can not only save space in the room, but also become a very convenient and multifunctional addition to your toilet.
  • Wall structures are attached directly to the wall surface and seem to “hang” over the floor. This option is very compact and original. When the flush cistern is built into the wall, the toilet does not take up free space, which is almost always necessary in a bathroom or toilet. It is worth considering two negative characteristics of such toilets. The structures are quite complex to install; their installation requires the participation of a professional craftsman, which entails additional costs. Also, similar black models in most cases are sold at a fairly high price.

Black toilets also vary in shape. They are:

  • oval , this variety will suit almost any interior style;
  • round models are more compact;
  • square or rectangular designs will be ideal for extravagant style trends.

An important feature in the classification of black plumbing models is the appearance of their surface.

There are several types of products:

  • Glossy. They have a characteristic shine and shimmer. When choosing such a model, you need to take care of the lighting features in the toilet.
  • Matte designs have an appropriate surface. It looks very original, but dirt on such devices is sometimes more noticeable, especially for any greasy stains.
  • Sometimes black borders on dark gray due to the presence of a metallic sheen. The metallic effect makes the surface of the toilet even more interesting. This option will fit perfectly with modern interior styles.
  • Those who like to experiment often use combinations of surface type and color . The toilet lid can be glossy, while the body itself can have a matte surface. You can also combine contrasting colors.

For example, the use of black parts on the body with white allows you to combine classic and modern in an original way.

Lighting

Black color has one feature - it absorbs light. The sun's rays do not enter the toilet, and therefore you need to be especially careful when organizing artificial lighting. A black toilet eliminates the use of one wall lamp. It is worth using spot lighting to highlight areas. In a black room, it is possible to create individual lighting for the floor, walls or ceiling.

Excess light will play a cruel joke on the owners of the apartment. It will be uncomfortable to stay in such a toilet even for a couple of minutes, and relaxing in it will generally become an unrealistic task. Here are some tips for lighting in a dark restroom.

  1. It is enough to hang one ceiling lamp and a couple of wall lamps.
  2. Do not direct the rays directly into the eyes or face. All lamps must be under shades or shades.
  3. Avoid using aggressive cold light. It is better if the wall devices are softer.

Bathroom Additions

In terms of practical use of the bathroom, you should remember about lighting, which can turn even a large and spacious room into a modest restroom.

When using red and black, lighting plays a significant role, as it will prevent darkness from reigning in an already darkened room.

Like any bathroom, a red bathroom requires care and regular cleaning. Red color cannot be classified as easily soiled, therefore, it can be used on the floor. In case of mold islands, use special means to remove it.

Interior styles

Typically, black requires a lot of space. If the room is large, then you can decorate it in many styles. The situation is different with small toilets. There are quite a lot of styles in which you can decorate a toilet in black.

  • Classic . To create this design, wood or marble imitation finishes are used. Black, violet, brown and purple in dark versions are inherent in the classic style. It is acceptable to use white or gold to highlight certain elements. Heavy classics may seem gloomy, in which case it is worth paying attention to later variations of the style. Gold and beige shades should be combined with black and bronze. The last two are quite realistic to implement in plumbing.

  • Rococo . Black is combined with light, cool shades of blue and beige. Gold monograms are used as decorative elements. Shelves should be decorated with lace. The style is distinguished by its lightness; the use of aggravating textures should be excluded.

  • Baroque. It has some similarities with the previous one, but is heavier. Black goes well with dark chocolate and gold. Imitation marble is more appropriate than ever. If the room is large, then you should put a table with a stone top. Baroque is always associated with something grandiose; this style was implemented in palaces.

It is appropriate to use a gold toilet and washbasin.

  • Antique. The style is ideal for fans of the culture of Ancient Greece. Beige plaster, frescoes, ivory-colored faience, and ornaments on the ledges and perimeters of the walls are used. Plumbing fixtures are characterized by curvature and smooth lines. Black fits perfectly into the ideology of antiquity.
  • Modern style. The solution is characterized by simplicity of shapes and lines. Monograms and marble surfaces are excluded. Plumbing fixtures with clear shapes are used. To decorate the walls, floor and ceiling, any colors are used, but without halftones. Black goes with red, white, blue, yellow, brown.
  • Art Deco. A black toilet looks best in this style. The main color is combined mainly with bronze and gold. It is acceptable to use white and beige in small quantities.

  • Minimalism. All surfaces are decorated in a single color, but the colors can be any. Decorative elements are excluded, the lines are regular and simple. The walls are laid with tiles of the same color, without inclusions or ornaments. The use of matte textures is relevant.

Furniture and accessories for a red and white bathroom

Choosing plumbing fixtures and bathroom furniture is always difficult, because you need to find something not only beautiful and matching in color, but also functional. Black plumbing fixtures look very impressive, but you will have to work hard to find them. The market is rich in white or milky models of bathtubs, toilets and sinks, which can also fit well into a red and white bathtub. Corner bathtubs, which come in various sizes and shapes, are widely popular.

Photos of different types of baths:

If the toilet is separate and it was decided to decorate it in the same way as the bathroom, then try to adhere to a single stylistic decision. Modern installations of toilets allow you to hide the entire sewer line from view.

When decorating a restroom and hygiene room, faucets play not so much a functional role as a stylistic one. In a red and white interior, they can be chrome or gold, emphasizing the luxury of the design. Hangers and handles are selected to match the faucets.
