Living room interior design 2022: 50 photos of modern design

The current year is ending, and with it the previous trends in various areas of our lives are going away. Soon there will be not only a change of seasons, weather conditions and the onset of long-awaited holidays, but also the continuous metamorphoses that constantly replace each other in the field of residential interior design will become more obvious. Of course, designers do not incline us to radically change the appearance of our home, but for those who are planning a renovation or even a small reconstruction of an apartment or house, it is better to be aware of the latest trends. After all, every owner wants to see his home not only convenient, comfortable, beautiful, but also fashionable, stylish, modern, decorated using innovative materials and methods of creating various interior items.

We invite you to learn about what new trends in interior design have emerged at the end of this season and will be relevant in the future using examples of living room design projects we have collected in different parts of the world. The living room is considered the main room in a house or apartment; it is here that family gatherings take place and guests are received; here you can relax and unwind, and gain strength for new achievements. The living room in the new season is a cozy room with the maximum level of personal comfort, harmonious, but at the same time incredibly functional.

Living room 2022 – new trends

At all recent exhibitions dedicated to interior design, one could see the clear primacy of the well-being motive, which can be translated as “well-being”. It is not surprising that in the era of total Internet, innovation, the incredible influence of various media resources, virtual communication, we increasingly need to create the most cozy, comfortable and warm interior in all respects. The living room of 2022 is designed to become just such a quiet refuge for minds overflowing with information and eyes tired of the constant flickering of advertising. But in pursuit of the latest innovations in the design of living spaces, it is important not to lose your own flair, preserve individuality and emphasize personal preferences, and not blindly follow the algorithm for creating the interior of a modern living room.

The concept of comfort is different for everyone. For some, to relax, it is enough to immerse themselves in a quiet atmosphere with a neutral decor; for others, accents are needed - both in the interior and the atmosphere of the surrounding space. But the designers tried to create a trend that will appeal to many and, to one degree or another, will satisfy needs and reflect stylistic preferences in a design project compiled with their own hands. The motive of “well-being” in their understanding is associated with a return to the roots and origins. That is why in the latest living room projects, so much attention is paid to creating a truly warm atmosphere, through the use of simple and concise solutions, in some cases with a rustic touch.

Natural materials, a family hearth, the warmth of homeliness and comfort, soft and fluffy fabrics, pleasant and natural color schemes - all these modern style motifs are literally created for the design of living rooms. If to create a warm atmosphere in a modern room you need to install an old chest of drawers or put covers with handmade lace on the sofa cushions, then in the new season you can do this without hesitation. Recent trends in the design of residential spaces allow for active decoration, which has long been denied by the minimalist sentiments of modern style.

Minimalism: attention to every detail

Many are attracted by the minimalist interior design of the living room - the photo shows that this style is an excellent solution for small rooms. Leather furniture, glossy furniture facades, modest shapes and bright colors – all these are the main features of this interior solution. When decorating a living room, there are a few key points to consider:

  • it is important to create an atmosphere of space that is filled with air;
  • a beautiful interior is ensured by compliance with proportions;
  • close attention is paid to space zoning;
  • the room is freed as much as possible from unnecessary items, and the most functional furniture is chosen;
  • the color palette should be thoughtful, without bright colors that irritate the eyes.

A living room in a minimalist style excludes an abundance of accessories. Minimalism requires bright and pure colors, but be sure to observe moderation.

The illumination of the entire stretch ceiling looks interesting; this option is well suited for interior design in a high-tech or minimalist style.
Versatility and simplicity are what distinguishes the minimalist interior design of the living room. The photo shows that the design of the premises is dominated by rigid geometric compositions, a minimum number of decorative elements, strict adherence to proportions and the use of elegant finishing materials. Minimalism is the use of pure colors and surfaces, focusing on monochrome and certain materials: glass, stone, mirrors and large areas of polished surfaces.

Color palette - set the tone in the living room

If we talk about the most popular color option for wall decoration in the living room of the coming season, then there will be no surprises - all shades of white are still the ideal backdrop for any furniture and decor. Light walls help not only to visually increase the volume of the room, but also to create a light, relaxed image of the space. In addition, in a room with snow-white walls, the easiest way to use a design accent technique is to paint one of the surfaces in a bright color.

The combination of snow-white tone with wooden surfaces is still relevant. Materials that are opposite in color temperature will create a harmonious union due to the fact that the white tone goes well with any color and texture option for the design of planes. The natural grain of the wood will help bring warmth to the rather cool snow-white look.

Contrasting combinations (in which white predominates) are still relevant for creating a modern living room design. Not only black and white combinations can decorate your interior and make it more dynamic. You can combine a white tone with dark gray (graphite), the color of dark chocolate, a very dark, deep burgundy shade. The interior always turns out clear, constructive, concise and structured.

Gray color and its many shades never cease to be mainstream in the design of living spaces. The 2022 living room will be no exception. The practicality, versatility and incredible harmony of this color allows it to be used in a wide variety of combinations, combining it with white, dark tones and bright accent spots. Gray color will be relevant for the execution of both furniture solutions and finishing materials.

New for 2022: multi-level coffee tables

The table is like a work of art.

This concept was announced by living room furniture manufacturers in 2018.

Since the functionality of coffee tables is very conditional (well, really!), their creators decided to reward their creations with sculpture and deep aesthetic content.

Glass, universal in its style, in a multi-tiered composition of a coffee table opens up for us in 2018 from a new side.

Materials for modern style

If we talk about the organic combination of a popular color palette with a soft, pleasant glow, then elements made of copper, brass and even gold will help provide it. If you like silver design, but give preference to matte variations of interior items rather than chrome (shiny) ones. Brass and copper are attractive with their light, slightly reddish glow, adding notes of mystery and magic to any interior. It is easy to imagine these alloys in combination with wood of various species. You will be guaranteed a touch of luxury in a modern setting.

If we talk about textiles, the most popular material will be plush. Its varieties can literally fill a space with warmth and comfort. The pleasant touch, warmth and attractive aesthetics of velvet and velor will help bring luxury and elegance to the interior of the living room. Almost all variations of plush have a subtle characteristic shine that will add gloss to even the most modest and laconic room. Initially, only very wealthy people could afford the luxury of using velvet or velor in the decoration of the main room of a home (usually for upholstery of upholstered furniture). Currently, plush looks great as an upholstery for modern models of sofas and armchairs, ottomans and poufs, and as a material for the backs of classic chairs.

Long pile and “fluffy” fabrics will also become integral companions of modern living room design projects. It is these elements that bring warmth and comfort to the decor of a common room and become favorite surfaces for touching. Whether it is a long-pile carpet or a chair cover, you will be guaranteed a comfortable and very homely atmosphere in the living room.

Leather upholstery of upholstered furniture never goes out of style. The material is too practical and versatile to be easily written off. Most often, leather (or its high-quality analogue) is used in warm, natural shades - from dark chocolate to light beige.

To integrate elements of rural life, wicker items are increasingly being used in modern design projects. These can be baskets for books standing near the sofa or armchairs, original poufs and rocking chairs. Decorative elements can also be made of wicker or rattan. The main feature is the use of natural color of the material. As a last resort, you can whiten the textured structure of wicker interior items.

Clinker bricks or terracotta ceramic tiles are increasingly being used as accent finishing materials. The most commonly used option is “brickwork” in a matte version, sometimes with specially aged surfaces. Terracotta tiles add a touch of industrialism on the one hand, and on the other hand, they bring the interior closer to simple, rustic life, where raw surfaces are often used. In addition, terracotta bricks can be used not only for partially finishing the living room, but also for cladding the fireplace and the space around it.

This is not the first time that the theme of closeness to nature has become mainstream. It is not surprising that city dwellers, amid the noise and dust, miss the color of the trees, the brightness of young grass, the shine of the water surface and the smoothness of the stones on the beach. In country houses, the owners want to create an atmosphere that is authentic to village life, pleasant to the eye and warm to the body. That is why wood is actively used as a finishing material - for walls, floors and even ceilings. Whether such a design will be accent or main depends on the size of the room, the level of natural light and the personal preferences of the home owners.

Features of the hall layout

There are two equivalent approaches here. The first is to use all available tools to visually expand the space. Colors, shapes, textures, furnishings, decor and textiles - everything is selected in such a way that the interior of a small living room does not become tied to size, so that the space appears larger visually.

The second approach appeared (or rather, was revived) not so long ago. Experts assure that the times are passing when all efforts were thrown into visual techniques for expanding space. Today, a room can be a little dark for a small area, and with a lot of decor and furniture, which is also not recommended for a small area.

Which option for a small apartment you choose depends only on your own goals and wishes. If you want to arrange a room to make it look wider, follow visual techniques. If you even want to emphasize the small size of the living room, make the disadvantage the highlight of the room, all the easier.

But planning features are taken into account in both approaches.

If the hall has a bay window, think about how to decorate this area. Often, nothing is done with it, the bay window is decorated with overly voluminous curtains, and a great opportunity to individualize the design is missed. But the bay window area is a wonderful place for a dining room, an excellent opportunity to place a mini-working office there.

Taking into account the available area, a project is drawn up. The question of what can be safely abandoned is being resolved. For example, slides, sections, and massive stands under the TV are often unnecessary. They often store things inside that their owners will never use. Therefore, the media zone can be simplified with some more interesting solution. For example, highlight the wall with other wallpaper, laminate, imitation brick wall, and maybe an unexpected panel on the entire wall.

Modern living room - harmony of ideas of different styles

Modern style is multifaceted and eclectic. It can harmoniously combine motifs from the following styles:

  • loft;
  • minimalism;
  • country;
  • eclecticism;
  • eco-style;
  • classical;
  • Scandinavian.

If in previous seasons there was a lot of minimalism and industrial styles in modern style, then current trends offer us a “softer” approach with an emphasis on discreet decoration. The modern living room is no longer so laconic and austere; additional elements appear in it, bringing greater comfort and coziness. The living room of 2022 has much more light and color, contrasting combinations and bright spots. The print, which has almost completely disappeared, returns to the living room interior in the form of fabrics for upholstering poufs and ottomans, and sometimes large armchairs, in the form of a pattern on carpeting or curtains.

For all lovers of the Scandinavian style, modern trends in the design of living spaces will be closer than ever. Freedom and light, space and conciseness, comfort and interchangeability of interior elements - everything that designers and their customers idolize so much in the style of Northern Europe will be relevant in the coming season. The Scandinavian style is not as cold and straightforward as the minimalist style; it is simple, but at the same time comfortable and cozy. Scandinavian motifs in modern style are also close to Russians - our climatic conditions are similar (at least in most territories of our huge country), the desire to create a practical but cozy interior also makes us similar.

It’s hard to believe, but modern design projects contain many elements from classical stylistic trends. Traditional style is present mainly in the design of upholstered furniture. This can be either a large sofa, or a pair of compact armchairs, or a pouf-ottoman, which acts as a furniture island. Classic motifs in furniture design fit perfectly into a modern, neutral environment, becoming focal points of the interior.

Another feature of the use of classic motifs in ultra-modern rooms is an extraordinary approach to decoration. For example, in a living room decorated in contemporary style (one of the variants of modern style) there can be completely neutral walls, plain and without decor, parquet or floor boards in a laconic design and a luxurious ceiling with rich stucco.

Arrange the space for yourself

The main trend of 2022 is to be yourself.

And finally, this trend has become relevant in the world of interior design!

People were so tired of glossy, impractical interiors that they were boycotted!

The conceptual design of the living room in 2022 will be built around the personality of the owner and his interests, preferences and needs.

Even if you want to occupy ⅔ of the room with a tennis court, you have every right to do so. And famous designers support you in this right!

Interior by type of building

When thinking about the design of all rooms, including the living room, we must not forget about the materials used to construct the building itself. After all, the design of rooms in a wooden or stone house can differ significantly.

In the first case, walls made of wooden beams are the most worthy and stylish decoration. There is no need to decorate them with wallpaper or plaster. This environmentally friendly natural material is capable of creating a homely, cozy atmosphere without any extra effort, which is perfectly demonstrated by the photos.

Ceiling surface

If you want to effectively emphasize the ceiling, install a tension mirror structure, a two-level plasterboard structure or a combination structure.

As an economical option, leveling according to the classical scheme and painting with water-based or interior paint, traditionally white, will do. This move will contribute to the visual expansion of the space and help fill the room with natural light.

Move plastic panels and polystyrene foam tiles into the background - squares and stripes visually reduce the height of the room. The same criteria apply to chandeliers - pomp and massiveness are unnecessary here. The photo shows the design of a modern small living room.

Room zoning

If the key factor when creating an interior is the multifunctionality of the hall, it makes sense to zone the space. The most popular zoning methods:

  • furniture;
  • plasterboard partitions (their use is outdated);
  • different wall designs (photo wallpaper, textured plaster, paint of different shades);
  • lighting.

An ultra-modern room does not require massive plasterboard structures, so the most relevant zoning option will be wall decoration and lighting. A central chandelier, floor lamps, sconces and other lamps will help highlight areas designed to perform specific functions. Using a variety of lighting, you can create a dining room, office, bedroom and living room directly in the same room.

Area of raw texture

In the process of getting acquainted with the implemented projects for decorating living rooms, you begin to pay attention to an interesting detail: the designers deliberately leave part of the surface of the wall or ceiling unfinished - as if expensive repairs did not affect them.

For example, you see expensive wallpaper for the 2022 living room, but one wall is bare concrete. Or there is a powerful wooden beam running along the ceiling, which seems to have been forgotten somehow to hide. Perhaps this unusual technique was borrowed from restorers, who always leave a piece of exposed ancient masonry on a plastered object.

If a bare concrete wall or a ceiling with old plaster seems too blatant solutions to you, you can restore the ancient parquet, or put a table made of rough wood under a flowerpot in the living room.
