Fans of homemade food are familiar with the route “stove – sink – refrigerator” and walk along it for several kilometers when preparing everyday and holiday dishes. How to arrange furniture in the kitchen so that your arms and legs are less tired, and the necessary things are always at hand? Read our tips.
Creating an original interior in the kitchen is not an easy task.
How to arrange your kitchen
This is where food is stored, cooked and eaten. In addition, dishes and cutlery are washed, dried and stored. In a modern kitchen you cannot do without the basic elements:
- Tables for cutting food;
- Cookers and baking cabinet;
- Air hoods;
- Refrigerator and microwave;
- Wall cabinets;
- Dishwasher;
- Sinks for food and mixer for cold and hot water.
From our article you will learn how to arrange furniture in the kitchen and correctly arrange the household appliances needed there.
Often the picture is complemented by a dining table, and a large number of utensils and pieces of furniture require an orderly and thoughtful arrangement. Where to begin?
Using the dining table
The dining table can be used in several ways. It can be used for family lunches or romantic dinners with your partner, or a place for homework, board games and your creative hobbies.
If you're looking for a table for activities other than enjoying a good meal, consider what type you need. The table on which school projects or airplane models will be created should be as stable and durable as possible.
How to arrange furniture in the kitchen
Armed with these rules and the drawing you made, draw up your master plan. After that, think about what type of arrangement it looks like. Furniture manufacturers provide several options to choose from, described below.
If you arrange the furniture in the kitchen correctly, then you will be as comfortable as possible when preparing dishes, and cooking will not turn into a chore.
Corner option
This method of arranging furniture is convenient for small rooms up to 10 square meters. m, where every square meter counts. All elements are located along two adjacent walls. The connecting links of the structure are a wall-mounted corner cabinet and an L-shaped tabletop.
Despite the fact that a decent chunk of the kitchen area is taken away, there is still room for a small dining table with chairs.
When the kitchen is large with two windows and is divided by an entrance door or an arched ceiling into two unequal parts, then in the smaller of them a corner arrangement can also be used.
Letter "P"
If your kitchen is 10-12 sq. m, and the front door is located opposite or to the side of the window, then it makes no sense to put a dining table in the kitchen; move it to another room. There are options for rooms where the kitchen is a narrow and short pocket to the left or right of the entrance.
Then it can be made into the letter “P”, using three adjacent walls.
Letter "G"
If the entrance to a small kitchen is located in one of the corners of the room, you can use all four walls, leaving a small space for the entrance and the door opening inward.
In a spacious dining room, the fourth side will act as a visual boundary separating the kitchen from the rest of the room.
Linear option
In studio rooms where there are no interior partitions, you can always allocate one of the walls for the kitchen area, placing it, for example, between the window and the front door.
A linear kitchen can be presented very profitably with the help of color, light and the right textures.
Island option
When the dining room is spacious enough, cabinets and a refrigerator can be placed along one of the walls, and between them and the dining area, a large and long kitchen table combined with a sink and hob can be placed at a convenient distance.
Increasingly, island kitchens are becoming a worthy decoration for city apartments.
Peninsular option
It is a modification of the corner arrangement of furniture in the kitchen for spacious rooms. One of the work surfaces, for example a cutting surface, is placed on a separate table, one of the ends adjacent to the main table top. This peninsula table can separate the kitchen area from the front door on the side.
You can place such a table in the middle and place all three work areas on it, and place wall cabinets and bedside tables at the end and on the sides.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION! It is better to place the refrigerator and tall cabinets at the edges of the kitchen units.
Where to put the stove in the kitchen
The stove or (hob) should not be located in the corner of the room. When cooking, drops of fat from the frying pan will abundantly stain the adjacent walls. But if this is the only option, make an “apron” of tiles on the walls.
Try to position the stove so that all the necessary utensils are in nearby or wall cabinets.
ATTENTION! Cabinet drawers next to the stove should not allow a child to reach the burners and get burned. Remove ottomans and stools from the kitchen that he can use.
It is not recommended to place the hob next to the sink. Water splashes from the faucet will splash onto hot frying pans and frying pans.
Where to install the sink and dishwasher
It is better to place them in one place closer to the sewer drain - you will not have to lengthen the pipes and file the lower part of the kitchen unit under them.
The kitchen sink should be deep enough and the faucet spout high enough to accommodate a large pan.
IMPORTANT! If this is not possible, then the distance from the sink to the sewer drain should not exceed 3 meters.
Planning a work triangle
Sink, stove, refrigerator - three essential elements of any kitchen composition. Most layouts involve their placement according to the principle of a triangle, where the elements are located at its corners (sometimes - two along the same plane and a third at the apex). It is believed that the distance between them should be no more than 270 cm, otherwise it will be inconvenient to reach them. In any case, regardless of the location of the headset itself, these three objects must be placed following the logic and comfort of the owners. So, next to the refrigerator there should be a place where you can put food, it is advisable to place the stove next to it so as not to run between them across the entire room.

When planning a kitchen in a private house with a window, the sink can be placed near it. This way you can wash dishes and admire nature, and the work surface on the sides of the sink will be well illuminated not only by artificial, but also by natural light. In this case, the countertop can be at the same or different levels with the window sill. If you use a dishwasher, provide a storage system for dishes so that they are within walking distance.

Work triangle in the kitchen: 6 solutions for different layouts
What else can be improved in the kitchen?
If free space allows, place a corner sofa in the opposite corner and a low table. A cargo rack will be an excellent decoration and a convenient place to store dishes for a festive table. It consists of several tiers of square and rectangular cells, between which lie long shelves.
Make your kitchen a comfortable and functional room in which you can comfortably cook and eat.
Railing
An excellent solution would be to install railings on a tiled “apron” between the kitchen countertop and wall cabinets.
This design consists of a chrome-plated metal tube mounted on the walls using special brackets.
Two railings on adjacent walls can be connected using a special corner element. Hooks for ladles, colanders, skimmers, as well as cutting boards and oven mittens are hung on the tube.
You can also place metal shelves on the railing - holders for lids, shelves for paper napkins, metal glasses designed for constantly needed cutlery or tools.
Install a bar counter
Its main difference from a dining table is the high location of the tabletop - up to 130 cm. Design options can be very different - from modest budget to luxury solutions for several people. The bar counter will undoubtedly become the most convenient and beautiful piece of furniture and interior design.
It will emphasize the zoning of the kitchen and can become a place for storing wine glasses, glasses and shot glasses, as well as expensive drinks.
If you want to impress your guests and show yourself as a hospitable host, then a chic bar counter with a cabinet filled with expensive drinks will help you with this.
A bar counter for a kitchen is not just a tribute to fashion, but a very interesting functional element of a modern home interior.
A small and low bar counter without a cabinet for drinks and glasses in a small kitchen can be an elegant replacement for a full-fledged dining table that is inappropriate in this situation.
With an L-shaped arrangement of kitchen furniture, it can become a natural extension of the kitchen set near the window.
Table material and dining table legs
Each table consists of a top and a scabbard. The material of both parts may be different and the choice depends only on your preferences. However, in general, the material should be practical, functional and at the same time harmonize with the interior.
Dining table top material
Wood
Wood is the most popular material for tables. Its appearance evokes a pleasant, cozy atmosphere. You can choose varnished wood or wood impregnated with natural oils or waxes, which will maintain the most natural look.
Glass table
Glass tables look minimalistic and elegant. They are often found in combination with other materials such as metal or wood. Do you prefer clear or frosted glass? Such a table must be properly taken care of, otherwise all the dirt will be visible on it.
Laminated table
Laminate is the most affordable material. The big advantage is its variety - you have many colors and decors to choose from. The problem, however, is that the edges can break off if they are not taken care of properly. Tables with ABS edges are the ideal solution. These are plastic edges made of high quality material. Laminated tables are more expensive, but are more resistant to heat and moisture, mechanical damage and do not change color over time.
Marble
Luxury marble looks luxurious and modern. This is a durable, heavy material that will add exclusivity to any kitchen. The advantages are natural colors and ease of maintenance.
Plastic table
Tables with plastic tops are very light and, if necessary, you can easily move them to another place. You will find plastic tables in a variety of colors, and you can also choose more non-traditional shades.
Dining table leg material
The legs should be the strongest part of the table. They hold not only the tabletop itself, but also anything you put on it. The choice of material should depend on the use of the table as well as the weight of the board.
Use your kitchen wisely
Are you unhappy with the empty spaces between cabinets? Fill them out! Equip convenient two- and three-tier shelves that roll out from the facade. Use the space between the floor and the bottom of the unit to equip another row of shallow drawers.
They will also save you from the need to regularly dust and wash the floor under the cabinets.
Take a closer look at your refrigerator. Usually he stands in the corner. But between it, the wall and the ceiling, an empty space forms. On the side you can equip a multi-tiered pull-out shelf in which you can store cutting knives and spices in a narrow glass container. And on top you can make mezzanines for items that you rarely use.
All these elements can be combined in the form of a case-cabinet with a large section made to fit the size of the refrigerator.
In a small kitchen with a U-shaped furniture layout, use a transforming table with a rising tabletop.
Place it near the window and you will have a small but cozy dining area that can accommodate two people.
The most inconvenient place to store dishes and tools is the corner of two adjacent walls. A large place under it falls out of “business” circulation. But here you can find a simple and effective solution. Install open corner shelves at an angle of the countertop. They will take up some space from the cabinets associated with them, but will provide additional useful space for the necessary items.
For easy access, make them round and rotating around a vertical metal stand - and you won't have to bend over backwards to get the pan you need.
The cooking process will become faster and more enjoyable if you make a competent layout and divide the kitchen into zones. Use the empty spaces between the furniture, floor, walls and ceiling to equip additional drawers and shelves. Make use of even the walls - rails equipped with hanging hooks, shelves and glasses provide convenient placement of cutlery, napkins and containers with spices.
If you have a large kitchen, do not skimp on purchasing a good dining table, at which it will always be a pleasure to celebrate holidays with family and friends.
Ideal dining table shape
The choice of dining table shape depends on your taste and style, as well as the overall decor of the kitchen. You can bet on the classics or give room for creativity and your imagination.
Rectangular table
The rectangular table is a classic. The minimum size for four people is 120 x 80 cm.
Square table
A square table is ideal for one or two people. Suitable size 80 x 80 cm - great for small apartments and studios.
Oval table
Because it has no edges, more people can sit at it than at a rectangular table of the same size. The absence of edges on the oval table will be especially appreciated by parents of restless children.
Round table
A round table is more suitable for large kitchens because it takes up more space. A table with a diameter of 100 cm is suitable for 3-4 people. For each additional person it is good to add another 25 cm.
