Neither adults nor children can be left indifferent by a children's room in a classic style. It attracts not only with its cozy appearance and natural materials, but also with its versatility: growing rooms or shared bedrooms can be decorated in this way. The classic nursery is suitable for boys and girls, teenagers and babies. If you want to get acquainted with new ideas for creating such a design in a room for children, read our article, which presents expert advice and photographs.

Characteristics of the classical style

The term “classic” (Latin “classicus”) means that this style is recognized as a standard and ideal. Classic also refers to everything that is typical, generally accepted and traditional. Those who choose a classic style design are not inclined to experiment and strive to use proven methods and techniques. This trend will always be popular, and classic interiors will remain in demand and modern.

There are many different trends within the classical style, but today we will focus on the most general features and give several examples of traditional design of children's rooms:

  • The interior has a certain focal point.
  • This means that an object is selected that becomes the starting point of the composition. For example, such a leading role is often given to the fireplace, and all pieces of furniture are arranged in a circle, the lines of the parquet pattern converge towards this center, and sconces are hung on both sides.

    So the composition looks like a single whole with a precisely designated central link, with which all other parts of the setting are connected. By the way, there can be more than one such reference points in a room.

  • The rule of symmetry and clear geometry with straight lines.
  • This characteristic principle should be strictly adhered to when creating an interior. Mentally divide the room in half with a straight line and if you see a mirror image of objects and decor on both sides, then with a high degree of probability we can say that this interior has a classic style.

  • Main and additional lighting sources.
  • Before the era of electricity, rooms could not be well illuminated by a single chandelier, even with many candles, and there was always a need to install additional lamps. For convenience, wall-type lamps (sconces) and table lamps were used.

  • Luxurious look.
  • Over the centuries of its development, the classical style has always been associated with wealth and solidity; it could only be found in the houses of those in power, so it is absolutely logical that modern classics continue to be considered a model of solidity and material wealth. Here it is worth clarifying that obvious luxury is attributed to the Rococo and Baroque styles, while classicism is still characterized by some modesty and asceticism.

  • Wide use of natural finishing and decorative materials: stone, wood, precious metals, plaster, high-quality fabrics.
  • Modern manufacturers can offer many options for flawless imitation of natural raw materials, but they still do not possess real energy.

  • National character.
  • Classic interiors in different countries were complemented by national features. French classics are distinguished by their commitment to pomp and pretentiousness, English-style interiors are easily recognizable by their restraint and strict asceticism, and the Russian classic image looks both natural and luxurious, and has a sense of subtle taste.

Advantages of the classic style in the interior of a nursery

  • Eco-friendly and safe.
  • Modern designers strive for environmentally friendly solutions. In most cases, when decorating children's rooms, natural materials and products are used: high-quality furniture made of wood, upholstery and curtains made of natural fabrics, finishing using traditional types of wallpaper, paints, and plasters.

  • A feeling of peace and comfort.
  • The main value of the classics lies in its versatility. This style can be used to decorate any room, and everywhere the interior in a classic spirit will look cozy and warm. So many parents create an island of calm in the children's room for their beloved children.

  • Impeccable taste and style.
  • The interior of the nursery must fully correspond to the character, age, gender and hobbies of the boy or girl. The classic style is the best option, suitable for almost any child, and, more importantly, it allows the development of good taste and a sense of harmony. You can raise a boy into a true gentleman, and a girl into a future lady, not only with words, but also with the help of a stylish environment.

Decoration for a girl

Any style can be made not only for a boy’s nursery, but also for a girl’s. Warm shades of red, lilac, pink, purple, muted green, crimson tones, white and light beige may predominate here.

The classic style for girls is emphasized with ruffles and bows, Provence - with flowers and other decor. Thematic styles include cartoon and fairy tale heroines, princesses and castles, and dolls.

The photo shows a children's interior for a girl in a classic style with beige checkered wallpaper.

Colors for a nursery in a classic style

A room for a teenage child can be decorated using original color combinations, and if a baby lives in the nursery, then it is better to stick to pastel colors without sharp contrasting accents.

Decoration and furniture in a classic nursery can be made in the following light and natural colors:

  • cream;
  • Ivory;
  • dairy;
  • pearl gray;
  • chocolate;
  • olive;
  • emerald;
  • wine

The absence of excessive contrast, brightness of details, shiny and iridescent neon shades will help you achieve stylistic unity when creating a nursery interior. For wall decoration, plaster and acrylic paints are usually chosen. It is acceptable to use light wallpaper with pale floral patterns.

Children's room for a girl

A classic nursery for a girl involves the use of pastel colors in the interior of the room. Most often this is:

  • beige;
  • lactic;
  • light pink;
  • peach.

For wall decoration, you can choose paper wallpaper with a fine pattern in the form of small flowers or a thin stripe. These details will help visually increase the area of the room several times.

White water-based paint is suitable for the ceiling. The main decor will be a beautiful crystal chandelier.

The classical style is characterized by the use of a large amount of plaster stucco, wood carvings and columns.

Particular attention is paid to the sleeping area. There should be a canopy made of airy fabric around the perimeter of the structure.

Near the spacious bed you can place a spacious chest of drawers or bedside tables.

The main emphasis of this stylistic direction are light sources. In the center of the ceiling there are multi-level designs of chandeliers and spotlights.

The design of the products combines decorative glass, metal parts and forging elements.

Features of the design and decoration of a children's room in a classic style

It’s great if you have to completely create a children’s bedroom in a classic style, because the decoration of the walls, floor and ceiling plays a basic role in the design.

  • Wall decoration.
  • It is better to finish surfaces using paint, plaster or wallpaper, and you can decorate them with moldings or boiserie panels. What pattern is suitable for wallpaper in a classic children's room? Choose traditional prints: large or small flowers, tartan or Vichy, stripes, “engravings”, floral patterns or Chinese motifs if you decide to create an exquisite chinoiserie interior.

    Important: for a classic design, it is better to paste with paper or non-woven wallpaper. Modern types such as vinyl should not be used in this interior.

  • Ceiling finishing.
  • Even if you plan to install a modern suspended or stretch ceiling, you can add a classic note with neutral shades and stucco decorations. By the way, frescoes will look beautiful on the ceiling or on one of the walls. Just remember to have a sense of proportion, this is a children's room, not a museum hall.

    The photo below is an example of a nursery in a classic style:

  • Flooring.
  • Wooden parquet goes best with a classic style. If the child is very small, he will be comfortable on a soft floor; children always love to play on a carpet with fluffy short pile.

Loft style

The loft interior has no clear boundaries and is suitable for a child’s room with a large window and high ceiling. It combines a variety of styles against a backdrop of plaster walls with accent brickwork, and combines modern furniture with antiques. Neutral colors are chosen for the walls, which are complemented by bright decor and textiles.

For a boy’s nursery, gray, indigo, red, and dark green colors are selected, for a girl’s room, pink, orange, and red finishing colors are selected. Beams, pipes, unconnected wires under the ceiling, an iron bed, a panel with a city view, intricate lamps, wooden toy boxes and volumetric letters create a loft-style atmosphere.

The photo shows the interior of a children's room in a loft style with brick walls, fashionable lamps and a table made from scrap materials.

How to choose children's furniture in a classic style

Characteristic features of classic furniture are the use of natural materials and elegant ornaments. In general, you should focus more on the age of the children. Kids need furniture to accommodate numerous toys, and it is advisable to do without glass shelves and doors.

In the nursery you definitely need to find a place for:

  • comfortable bed;
  • bedside table;
  • chest of drawers or wardrobe;
  • table and chair for the study area;
  • dressing table and pouf if you have a girl.

It is better to purchase a children's bed in a classic style in a calm, noble shade. Decor – a bedspread and two pillows. The product should stand on wooden carved legs, and the whole body should be made of wood without a soft headboard.

What is better to buy furniture for a children's room in a classic style, so as not to regret it later? Please note the following selection guidelines:

  • If possible, you should not take all pieces of furniture from one set to decorate a children's room. A little variety will be added by products that match the style, but differ in shape and color.
  • In a children's interior, gilded details, varnish, and antique jewelry look ridiculous, and it will be more difficult to clean such a room.

Decorating a nursery

Windows should not be overdraped. Classic curtains with tulle are suitable. An excellent option is a Roman blind on the window; it is also easy to care for.

Textiles for curtains should be chosen natural or mixed, easy to wash and iron. Suitable curtain prints are checks, stripes, flowers, plants. It would be nice if the curtains had a similar pattern to the wallpaper.

To decorate the beds - carelessly scattered traditional pillows to match the overall color scheme of the room, little thoughts with tassels.

There is room for imagination in decorating the walls of a nursery: you can hang a picture of the sea or a forest, portraits of fairy tale writers, interestingly shaped clocks, photo frames.

If the size of the nursery allows, you can install a small artificial fireplace.

There should definitely be classic toys, for example, a rocking horse, a teddy bear, and model ships.

When decorating a children's room, you need to make sure that the play area fits into the classic style.

In children's rooms, a wooden table with chairs for drinking tea, or a machine for ballet exercises, is good for girls. For boys, you can install a toy wigwam.

A room for a child in a classic style, like any room in the house, should have a finished look, but taking into account its features - since this is a children's room.

Decor and textiles for children's rooms in a classic style

The main decor for decorating a classic nursery can be considered safe and wear-resistant PVC products that imitate molded parts. This way you can decorate both the ceiling and walls.

A variety of overlay molding strips are widely used to create a classic design; with their strict lines they emphasize the correct geometry of the room. A small fence made of balusters can be used to draw a boundary in a room, separating one functional area from another. Plastic half-columns will decorate the junction of the fresco with the wallpaper. These details fully emphasize that it belongs to the classics.

Now let's talk a little about textile design. First of all, you need to select products made from linen, cotton or other natural material. The upholstery of chairs, armchairs or sofas can be made of tapestry. Windows are a very important element when decorating a nursery. Curtains should be thick (heavy silk, brocade, taffeta, jacquard) so that the light does not disturb the child’s sleep. An airy light tulle, veil or organza will go well with a set with curtains. The curtains will be decorated with a lambrequin and stylish tiebacks that gather the fabric in soft folds.

Once again I would like to remind you that in a children's room you need, first of all, to create a comfortable and harmonious interior and not to overdo it with the decor.

Children's lighting in a classic style

Good lighting also plays an important role in determining the degree of comfort, so when creating an interior, great attention is paid to it. With the help of the play of light, you can zone and visually transform the space.

Let's look at some principles for organizing lighting in a children's room:

  • Lighting quality. Mainly, good lighting is needed near the desk in the study area so that the child can study comfortably and his eyes should not get tired or feel strained.
  • Multi-level system. It is better to hang a chandelier on the ceiling of the room for general lighting, and additional local lighting devices will be required: a night light by the children's bed, lamps on the desktop and dressing table.
  • Choose a shape according to your style. Classic chandelier - multi-arm with crystal pendants and wooden details. It is also possible to use fabric shades and lamps in the form of candlesticks.
  • A comfortable solution would be to divide the bedroom into two parts using lighting if children of different sexes live in it. Let’s assume that the girl’s area will be illuminated by a chandelier with a crystal cascade of pendants, and in the “men’s” half you can hang a small wooden chandelier with strict shapes.

Lighting in the room

Since the lighting is intended for a child, in addition to the central light source there should also be lamps above the bed and near the table. To avoid damaging the child’s vision, yellow lamps are used.

  • Crystal lamps, as well as sconces made of different metals, are suitable for girls. However, any classic chandelier may not work to its advantage if the nursery is intended for a baby and not a teenager.
  • For a boy, chandeliers should also be made strictly, without too much pomp.

Examples of lighting can be admired in the following Photo collection.

Children's in a classic style for girls

Wall decoration in a girl's room can be done with classic wallpaper. How not to make a mistake when choosing a pattern? Let us remind you: the best choice for such a nursery is light-colored wallpaper with traditional prints: stripes, tartan, small and large flowers, engravings, delicate patterns.

Finishing is done using the following tones:

  • soft pink;
  • red;
  • beige;
  • white;
  • orange.

A prerequisite for decorating a classic girl's bedroom will be the choice of non-woven or paper wallpaper. At the stage of selecting materials for finishing the floor, you should pay attention to good quality wooden parquet or laminate. The plinth is usually made high; it looks best in white.

Traditional ceiling finishing is done by whitewashing or painting. In classic design, the use of stucco is especially welcome. But the nursery should remain childish; its appearance should not be too elegant. There is no need to burden the interior with gilding, carvings or typical classical architectural details such as pilasters. During children's games, it is easy to damage decorations of this kind, and it will be difficult to put them in order.

The main place in the room belongs to the bed. Its design needs to be done most carefully. For example, your daughter may like the design with a canopy, or maybe you will like the idea of making a soft part for the headboard yourself. The bed should be decorated with a set of bedspreads and pillows. It is convenient to have a bedside table, a dressing table with a mirror on the wall and an ottoman nearby. There should be a beautiful chandelier on the ceiling, and a sconce by the bed.

The classic version of a chandelier is a crystal cascade or a metal model in brass or antique bronze color; candle bulbs, crystal sparkling pendants and fabric lampshades also look good. For lighting a teenage girl’s room, these types of lighting fixtures are the most suitable.

Furnishings

What should classic children's furniture be like? We suggest taking note of the following furnishing tips:

  • Try to avoid furniture and not buy all the furniture from one series. Let some items differ from the main set in shape and color. This way the interior will become more noble and lively.
  • Classic children's furniture should not be too elegant. After all, gilding, varnishing, carving and pilasters require careful handling, besides, they increase the cost of furniture, complicate cleaning and overload the interior.

Examples of classic design of cabinets, chests of drawers, tables and chairs in the interior can be seen in the following selection of photos.

  • Don't be afraid to repurpose old and new furniture. For example, you can change the handles of an Ikea wardrobe, repaint an old Viennese chair in an interesting color, and the most ordinary bed can be supplemented with a homemade soft headboard.
  • Pay special attention to the choice of bed and its design. A girl can have it with a canopy and an elegant headboard; photo examples of bed designs for girls in a classic style.

A boy's bed should be stricter; a solid wooden or simple metal bed with a simple headboard will do. By the way, today the trend is beds or sofas with a figured headboard and soft upholstery.

Children's room for a boy in a classic style

When arranging a boy's room, you also need to take into account the level of illumination. For a nursery with windows facing south and well-lit, you can choose wallpaper in cool tones. It is worth taking a closer look at the following shades:

  • blue;
  • sea wave;
  • lavender gray;
  • ultramarine;
  • cobalt blue.

Warmer shades, for example, ocher, beige, olive are suitable for decorating a bedroom with windows facing north.

Advice: if you don’t like wallpapering your children’s room or don’t like them at all, then painting is also a suitable option for the classic style.

Are you tired of seeing standard laminate flooring in all your homes? You can choose cork flooring or piece parquet. Half of the room intended for the baby should be covered with a warm carpet. Elements of frescoes are often used as decoration, but only within reasonable limits. If you are not satisfied with the look of the whitewashed ceiling, then try installing a tension structure. In this case, not glossy, but matte. The classic style is supported by an elegant rosette around the chandelier.

As mentioned above, the nursery does not have to be furnished with a classic set of one series; today a popular solution is to purchase slightly different furnishings from each other. But in the end, the overall picture should take on a harmonious and complete look. Only it won’t look like a picture from a magazine, but will turn out alive and natural. Some products can be made with your own hands, and sometimes together with the child.

Alternatively, you can paint one of the old chairs in a different, unusual color, make a new lamp, or decorate the cabinet with a suitable pattern. For a boy, you can choose a metal bed with a simple headboard. Or put a wooden model on carved legs and put a few pillows on it. Make sure the patterns and shades match. The study area should have a set of a comfortable table and chair. We remind you that wood is the best material for a classic nursery.

The nursery environment should be appropriate for the child's age. The baby needs boxes for toys, a small table with a chair, glass items and decor should not be used in the interior, but a few soft ottomans will not hurt.

A chandelier on a wooden frame is the best choice for a boy's bedroom. Additional lamps should be installed on the bedside table and in the work area. Lantern models and a classic lamp are better suited here. Too bright colors are undesirable; the color of the lampshade should be warm.

Color spectrum

To prevent a classic-style children's room from turning out too grown-up and boring, it must have color. The main thing is that it is not flashy, but otherwise there are no restrictions. You can use any bright and clean, natural and slightly muted, as well as pale and pastel colors not only in accents, but also in the basis of the interior. Here are some tips that may be useful:

  • Consider the orientation of the room to the cardinal points, especially when choosing wallpaper or paint for the walls. In well-lit “southern” nurseries, cool tones will be good: lavender gray, cobalt blue, ultramarine, sea green, blue. For dark “northern” children's bedrooms, choose warm shades: beige, ocher yellow, orange, quartz pink, salmon, red (for toys and accents).

We present ideas for interesting color designs for children's and teenagers' rooms in a classic style in the following selection of photos.

  • In small rooms, light shades should predominate, and white is best.

  • Bright shades should be used in moderation, that is, in accents - in the form of curtains, paintings on the walls, pillows, bedspreads and rugs.

Children's room in a classic style for two children

Before purchasing furniture, it is necessary to determine the functional purpose of the room. If children come here only to rest at night, then the room should be furnished like a bedroom. To decorate the walls, it is preferable to choose the option of plain pastel wallpaper or with a light pattern. In such a calm interior, children will be able to have a good rest and sleep.

A children's bedroom is best done in white. Arrange only the necessary furniture. Then a white children's room in a classic style will look like a calm and cozy space. For furnishing, two beds, a pair of bedside tables and a spacious wardrobe are enough. It’s great if there is a place for a dressing table and a mirror - the little beauties will be pleased.

Children usually spend a lot of time in their room, so when a nursery combines different functions, it is advisable to allocate separate zones in it. Two children will need to set up separate workspaces for reading, drawing and homework. In the common play area you can conduct joint activities.

Furniture for the work area should be installed closer to the windows, that is, two tables with chairs. The play area may be located in a less lit part of the nursery.

A bunk loft bed is simply a godsend for decorating a nursery in a classic style in a Khrushchev-era building or in any small apartment; it helps solve the problem of placing children in a small room. All that remains is to determine who will get the top shelf, or simply establish a queue.

The needs of children at different ages should not be neglected. It is important to understand that for comfortable living together it is necessary to come to reasonable compromises. When one of the children is still a preschooler, and the other is approaching adolescence, their interests are different, then you need to seriously think about dividing the space into separate identical zones.

The younger half will have more toys, and the student's main place will be occupied by a desk with notebooks and textbooks. The decoration of different parts of the room should reflect the age characteristics of each.

Before we talk about proper zoning, we need to clarify that this is important for both aesthetic and educational purposes:

  • the child experiences a comfortable psychological state when he has his own space for development and self-expression;
  • The sooner a child is taught to be clean, the better;
  • if the room belongs to two children, this position allows you to better understand the feelings of the other person and treat them with respect.

In the nursery, if technically possible, you can separate the beds by installing a partition. Thus, each child will have his own area for personal activities. The partition can have shelves and mirrors if two girls live in it.

Children will feel calmer if their room is not located next to the living room or kitchen. It’s good when they are not disturbed by extraneous odors and noises coming from the kitchen and other parts of the house.

Try to allocate a room for a classic children's room with windows facing west or east, then during the daytime the sunlight in it will be distributed evenly.

If the nursery is intended for children under three years old, then before planning different zones and renovations, you should first take into account the needs of the mother. You need to install a crib and changing table next to each other; everything you need should be within arm's reach. The play area with a playpen and soft toys should be placed in another part of the room.

Children of preschool and primary school age should play and move more, they should be allowed to feel like just children and not be overloaded with “adult” activities. For them, the room can have several zones:

  • bedroom;
  • gaming;
  • sports;
  • creative.

Children can each do their favorite thing, and even if one wants to draw and the other wants to hang on the sports complex, they will not interfere with each other.

Older children, around the age of 13, already have more adult interests; in this case, special attention should be paid to zoning. At this time, studies and organization of the educational process come to the fore. It is important to purchase a good children's desk in a classic style, and install bookshelves and bedside tables nearby. The bed can be bunk, this allows you to leave more free space, and the teenager will have a personal space where he can be alone.

The easiest way to quickly divide a child's room into separate zones is to place furniture items in different parts of the room. But you can go further and use various design techniques: lighting, different tones of surface finishes, partitions, curtains and screens - to highlight the functional areas in the nursery more brightly and clearly.

You can organize and highlight the boundaries of zones using color contrasts. Bright colors are suitable for the games and sports part, where the children will be able to splash out their energy to the maximum. And the resting place and work area are best done in a pastel version. An interesting method of dividing a room is to create a furniture labyrinth. Another zoning technique is the arrangement of a podium, when beds are placed on the upper part, and the playing and learning space is located on the lower tier.

Pieces of furniture, including a classic-style wardrobe for a children's room, should not be too bulky. Create a light, airy atmosphere, then the room will be more comfortable. A light shade is best for beds, but if the cabinet furniture is dark in color, use bedspreads and other textiles in white or pastel shades. The dimensions of the desktop must be consistent with the overall dimensions of the room; there is no need to be too large. Which cabinet to choose? There are a lot of options. For example, it is convenient to install a built-in model with a mirrored door.

The children's room is very decorated with various details; with the help of shelves, drawings, photo frames, they create their own atmosphere, comfortable for the child. Children can express themselves creatively and, together with their parents, create unique accessories in a classic style.

Children's room for teenagers in a classic style

The most problematic period for parents seems to be the teenage transition period, when the child is 13–17 years old. Children grow up, their appearance and psychological state change, so changes in the interior are simply necessary. Classic design must take into account new needs and meet emerging interests and personality traits.

Teenage girls, more often than boys, choose classics for their rooms, although this direction is considered universal. This is due to the fact that the most suitable colors for decoration are pastel colors: pinkish-white, yellow, cream, which can be called girlish. Also, the ideal decor for a girl’s room would be stucco molding, heavy curtains, and a four-poster bed.

We also note neoclassicism. This is a modern design option that can be used to decorate an entire apartment, house or any room, including a nursery for a child of any age. The neoclassical style is distinguished by light neutral tones in the decoration, classic shapes of furniture items, pastel and natural accents, natural materials (fabrics, wood, etc.), subdued lighting.

When decorating a teenage boy’s room, it is better to use the following tones: coffee gray, gray beige, beige cream and chocolate white.

Classic interior

A classic interior in a nursery should combine beauty and practicality; a minimum of classic luxurious decor is used here, which, due to the presence of toys, will make the nursery overcrowded with small accessories.

  • The furniture should be wooden with carved decoration, but without gilding. The chair and table are classic, as are the wardrobe, chest of drawers, and high bedside table. Use a daybed, sofa bed or a simple bed with legs.
  • Wallpaper is suitable for non-woven, paper or textured wallpaper for painting. Light, plain walls will become the background for the furniture. Blue, olive, salmon, beige colors are suitable. The wallpaper design can be in contrasting stripes, with flowers or twisted patterns.
  • It is better to choose classic short curtains with tulle or Roman curtains for the children's room. Natural fabrics with the addition of viscose are used. Lambrequin, interceptions and garters will highlight the style.
  • Accessories will include soft rollers with tassels, pillows, framed paintings or drawings by a child, a decorative fireplace, and sconce candles.

For a girl, they select a design for a four-poster bed, porcelain dolls, teddy bears, a small table and a carved chair for doll meals.

For a boy - a railway, boats, a rocking horse in a blue, green and light interior.

Baroque

Baroque in a children's interior is emphasized by lush curtains made of heavy curtains with a lambrequin, a crystal chandelier, a portrait of a child in knightly armor or a lush dress, and tapestries.

Neoclassical

The neoclassical interior in the nursery combines the classic sophistication of furniture and modern decor and equipment. The classics are complemented by modern lamps, a suspended ceiling, curtains, blinds, a wardrobe, a computer on the table or a game console.

Italian style

The Italian children's style is created by combining classics in warm beige tones with false columns, frescoes, modeling, climbing or large flower-trees in pots.

Art Deco

Art Deco is suitable for a teenager; this children's room is distinguished by bright shades and a combination of purple with white and black, pink with white or silver, an abundance of mirrors, crystal feathers, geometry on the wallpaper, and strict lines.
