Soft shades, harmoniously selected textiles and dim lighting - all this helps to make the atmosphere pleasant and relaxing. If you want to create a truly soulful interior, you should sew curtains for the bedroom yourself: this way you can choose the ideal option for the room, taking into account the size of the window and personal preferences, or simply save on atelier services. In addition, modern stores offer interesting options for fabrics and accessories, allowing you to transform your bedroom into a unique design project that you will definitely not see anywhere else.
Curtains in the interior
Curtains play an important role in shaping the style. Classic plain floor-length curtains will decorate the window in a modern style. French or Austrian curtains are suitable for sophisticated classics. Complex draperies of soft lambrequins are needed for interiors in the neo-Baroque or Renaissance style.
For rooms in a minimalist style, blinds or their substitutes are suitable: roller blinds or Roman blinds. A cozy atmosphere in country or Provence style will be created by simple curtains made of cotton or linen, plain, checkered or with a small floral pattern.
Kitchen curtains
When you have ready-made patterns for curtains for the kitchen, creating curtains will become a fun and interesting activity. Usually these are rectangular canvases, decorated with ruffles, colorful braid, and lambrequin.
Some interesting options for patterns of curtains for the kitchen for sewing yourself. For example, curtain ties are a rather original and successful solution for framing a kitchen window opening. Any interior will benefit from this. Except perhaps for the high-tech style. The main thing is that the strings are loosely fastened, then they will look like decorated elements. Choose the color and shape, different materials according to your own taste and then it will be your own “know-how”. The pattern itself is a rectangle shape. When all the edges have been properly processed, the original ties are sewn on top.
The “T-shirt” curtain with bias tape for processing scallops looks very unique. Or, using the same pattern, an undercut is made for each double loop. The horizontal stroke indicates the bottom of the border. Located directly under the hinges. The loops are processed and bent along the marked line. In order to avoid problems with removing the curtain, the fastening should be with Velcro or buttons.
Sewing curtains with your own hands
Sewing curtains is a simple task when it comes to simple models. After all, in essence, a curtain is a processed piece of fabric. If you have minimal sewing skills on a sewing machine, this same machine, an iron and a large table, you can try to sew curtains yourself.
Perhaps the main difficulty in sewing curtains is not the sewing process itself, but the calculations. The final appearance of the product depends on their correctness. Agree, it is very disappointing if the finished curtain turns out to be shorter and does not reach the floor by about five centimeters.
Where to begin?
Have you decided to sew? Start with the main thing - having a sewing machine. If this is there, everything else is just a matter of time and perseverance. Well, if not so literally, then let's start with choosing a style.
You can't decide how to sew without knowing what to sew. It is best to start with a simpler model, without various draperies. But let's look at the bedroom.
Curtains on a wall curtain rod
On the Internet there are many interesting patterns for sewing curtains with your own hands. Choose the one you like and adjust it to the size of your window.
Kitchen curtains are good because they give free rein to all sorts of decorations that might be out of place in the living room. For example, various ways to attach curtains to a curtain rod. It is not at all necessary to choose a ceiling cornice for the kitchen. Just the opposite, a wall-mounted wooden cornice gives more room for creativity.
There are several ways to attach curtains to a wall curtain rod.
Fabric: which one to choose and buy?
It is better to make curtains for the bedroom yourself from non-elastic, dense materials - this will make the job easier, the stitches will come out smoother and the overall appearance will be neater. The optimal solution is linen, cotton or their high-quality imitation. For a light curtain, translucent gauze is suitable, and thicker, non-transparent fabrics can be used as the basis for the side curtains. As for the color palette, the choice here depends entirely on the style of the bedroom, existing textiles - bedspreads, decorative pillows, carpets, napkins on bedside tables, and so on. The main thing is not to choose too bright contrasting combinations so that the atmosphere is conducive to relaxation. To put together a complete ensemble for the bedroom, you can immediately look at the material for the pillows and bedspread.
DIY set: thick curtains with soft folds and translucent tulle
You can choose motifs and ornaments in accordance with the chosen style. These can be small inconspicuous flowers, a scattering of peas or stars, a cage, stripes and abstract geometry. But even plain curtains will sparkle in a new light if the textile composition is chosen to match the theme. For example, gray curtains can be set off with a gray-blue striped bedspread. So you need to carefully consider the components of the fabric decor so that the bedspread on the bed is not a separate accessory, but a harmonious complement to the curtains.
Loops
Wide short stripes are made from the same or additional contrasting fabric, which are sewn in the form of loops evenly along the upper edge of the curtain. The loops can be either stitched or fastened with large decorative buttons sewn to the curtain. Another option would be to tie a loop into a bow.
Decoration
When decorating curtains, first of all you need to take into account the characteristics of the fabric used.
To decorate lightweight material you can use:
- beads;
- multi-colored silicone tape;
- flowers.
Heavy fabric is often decorated with fringe. On New Year's Eve you can decorate it with beautiful tinsel or serpentine.
Eyelets
Curtains with eyelets look very modern, but installing the rings requires a special tool; at home it is quite difficult to achieve high quality workmanship.
What is important to consider
The complexity of the execution depends on the chosen model. In addition, be sure to study the attached instructions, and all actions are carried out strictly according to them. Ultimately, it will become clear that the task was within your capabilities, despite the apparent difficulties.
First of all, decide on your wishes. Which room are the curtains intended for, what style is present in the interior and what color palette will be most suitable for the colors and shades already present. In addition, you need to know exactly the functions of the curtains for which all this work is being done.
Roman curtains
For kitchens in a modern style, rooms and offices in a minimalist style, such rustic delights are not suitable. The window design should correspond to the general style and also be minimalistic. A Roman blind would be an excellent solution.
The Roman blind's lifting method is similar to horizontal blinds. Thanks to the horizontal slats, the curtain is gathered upward using a cord, forming identical folds. It's not that difficult to make.
The pattern of Roman blinds is a rectangle equal to the size of the window if the curtain is hung directly on the window frame, or extending beyond the width of the window opening by 10 cm on each side if the curtain is attached to the wall. In order to calculate the width of the canvas, add 2 cm on each side for processing the side cuts.
The length of the curtain needs to be increased by about 10 cm for a wide hem at the bottom, into which a weight strip is inserted (depending on the width of this strip) and processing of the upper edge.
After processing the side sections, top and bottom edges, the entire length of the curtain is divided into 7 equal parts - this is how places for attaching horizontal slats are marked. They can be secured in two ways: sew a ribbon on the wrong side of the curtain under which the rail will be inserted, or form drawstrings from the curtain fabric itself on the wrong side - tunnels for inserting the rail. For the latter method, you need to increase the length of the fabric in advance by adding to it the width of two layers of drawstring, multiplied by the number of folds (in our case, seven).
At a distance of 2-3 cm from the side cuts, at the locations of the slats, small rings are sewn through which the cord will be threaded. If the curtain is very wide, it makes sense to add a row of rings along the center line.
When the curtain is ready, two (or three) pieces of cord equal to twice the length of the curtain are secured in the lower rings, passed through all the rings to the top and through the fastenings in the cornice to one side of the window. To ensure that the curtain gathers evenly, the ends of the cords can be braided.
The ability to sew and the availability of free time opens up enormous scope for creativity for a woman, and examples of the work of other craftswomen inspire her to master new techniques.
Determine the required footage
Before purchasing, you need to decide on the footage - special measurements are taken for this. To make it easier to remember the parameters, draw a simple sketch on paper that you can take with you to the store and at the same time try out color combinations. Consider the location of the curtain - the future dimensions of the product completely depend on this. Therefore, it is better to install the cornice first, and then come up with a curtain, only in this case the finished product will not be “shot” and will not “drag along the floor.”
The parameters are defined as follows:
- the length is measured from the floor to the top point of the fastenings (rings, tube). The easiest way to do this is if ceiling cornices are installed - the distance from floor to ceiling is obtained. To correctly calculate the required length, add 10-15 centimeters on each side “in reserve”.
- The width is limited by the curtain itself, so it is enough to measure it from the first fastening to the last. Here you need to decide on the drapery - do you want a freely hanging fabric or lush folds? In order for the folds to lie beautifully and unnoticeably, you need to take one and a half or two widths (that is, multiply the resulting width by a factor of 1.5 or 2). And to sew a lush drapery you will need two and a half or three widths (multiply by 2.5 or 3, respectively).
