Combining a kitchen with a living room or room in 2022. Examples and tips.

In the process of renovating an apartment, you always want to make the interior more individual, expressive, and different from other rooms. One such method is to install an arch between the kitchen and living room. At first glance, there is nothing special; instead of a rectangular ceiling, the ceilings of the two rooms are separated by an arc. Instead of tricky zoning options using furniture or different floor coverings, a simple arched design solves the same problem much easier and more efficiently.

The arch between the kitchen and living room (38 photos) is an element of decor and zoning

Those who have remodeled their own apartment, combining the kitchen and living room into one unit, are beginning to think about how to play with the boundaries between these two rooms.
The idea of expanding the kitchen by removing the partition is, in principle, optimal for this particular case. But still, the organization of space must be respected. Therefore, designers offer a number of options with which you can beat the interior of the newly created room.

Original arch between the living room and the kitchen

One such option is an arch between the living room and kitchen. This method of separation has been known for a long time, but even today it is used quite often. And the whole point is that the arch, as a design element, fits well into almost any style of room design. In addition, this is a kind of door substitute in terms of marking the entrance.

Decor options for arched structures

Modern arches not only allow you to significantly expand the kitchen space, but can also be used as storage areas. On the side racks you can always arrange small shelves, racks, hooks on which small items, keys, and souvenirs will be stored.

The second interesting option for decorating interior arches is the installation of additional lamps. Most often, spot modular lamps or LED strips play this role. This type of lighting is often used to advantageously accentuate the kitchen area, dining table, and small bar counter.

The arch itself can be used as an additional decor if you install an original metal wicker lattice inside. These can also be ready-made plastic inserts or ornaments carved from wood.

An arch to the kitchen is an interesting decorative element that can decorate any room. Arched openings not only look attractive, but also allow you to visually increase the living space. They also perfectly zone the space. Why do some people think that installing arches instead of doors is the ideal solution when updating a kitchen, while others will never agree to such changes?

Types of arches according to vault shape

Let's consider the most current types of arches.

Classical

The most common option, which is also called Roman. This is due to the fact that it was the Romans who, during construction, began to make semicircular vaults instead of doors. The design of plasterboard arches of this shape fits any interior. Designs of regular semicircular shape look especially good in rooms with high ceilings. The arch between the kitchen and the hallway in modern apartments with a small doorway is often made in the classical form, as this type of construction is suitable for narrow spaces.

Portal

A very simple form in which the arch is shaped like a rectangle. Ideal for small apartments with low ceilings. Thus, without much effort, you can combine the kitchen with the hallway by replacing the door with an empty opening. Arched portal-shaped structures look strict and restrained.

Modern

An arched opening instead of a door in the Art Nouveau style is a “hybrid” between the classic version and the portal. Strict straight walls are combined with a rounded arch arch. This option is ideal for low ceilings and large spaces. Modernism is suitable for a kitchen if you connect it with a dining room or living room.

Eastern

Interest in the life of the inhabitants of the east resulted in the use of special arched structures. This shape is characterized by its complexity, numerous sharp angles and convex surfaces. Used exclusively to create Mediterranean-style interiors.

Ellipsoidal

An easy to implement form. Homeowners prefer a kitchen design with an elliptical arch because it is versatile and has a sophisticated look. This option is suitable for different interior styles; it does not reduce usable space, which is why it is often used to separate the kitchen. Often combined with columns.

Original

Most often, people choose arches of simple shapes, but designers advise combining familiar shapes and creating something unique.

Designing an opening in a room can be a real creative process. Modern technologies will allow you to implement any creative solutions, be it an asymmetrical arch or a traditional shape with extravagant decorative elements.

Materials for making arches

Let's talk about materials common for making arches.

Arched doorway in the kitchen

Arch with columns in the kitchen

Plastic

The cheapest option. However, despite the low cost and ease of fastening products, plastic does not have many fans. This is due to the fact that ready-made structures are usually available for sale from PVC. They are all standard shape and size, which does not allow for creativity. In addition, this material is not very suitable for creating a cozy atmosphere. Although if you set out to make something modern and non-standard, then with a good choice of color the result will be very acceptable. It also pairs well with recessed lighting.

Drywall

From plasterboard in the kitchen you can make a structure of both a non-standard format and a classic shape. The gypsum board must be secured to a metal frame, which has previously been given the desired shape. Then the surface is puttied and painted. Thus, plasterboard arches for the kitchen can acquire not only the required shape, but also a shade of color. Instead of paint, the surface can be decorated with wallpaper.

Wood is a natural material with a pleasant aroma, which is often used to make kitchen arches. There is a large selection of ready-made wooden arches on sale, but it won’t be difficult to create the structure yourself.

The advantage of wood for finishing an arch is that it does not require additional decoration. It is enough to treat the product with varnish.

Drywall structures are often finished with wood, because making an arch entirely from wood is quite expensive. The disadvantages include sensitivity to scratches.

Types of interior arches

Arches can be quite varied and designed for specific purposes. In the added photos you can clearly see the appearance in different variations.

Interior arch in the living room photo

Classic - in the form of a regular semicircle, due to the geometric ideal, the most common, as it fits perfectly into different stylistic solutions for the design of an apartment, office and country house. The decor of a classic interior arch can be anything. Minimalism and a shining curtain assembled from individual beaded threads will look equally good in the interior.

“Romantic is a rectangular arch with rounded edges. An excellent choice for country houses, since its usual application is wide doorways, which, if classical proportions were used, would start from the ceiling.

Rectangular is the simplest type of arch; you can even create it yourself, since there is no need to dismantle the old doorway. Also a plus is the possibility of installing such an arch in houses with concrete walls, in which creating a classic version would entail a huge investment of time and effort, since breaking out an additional opening, as is the case with brickwork, will not work with a concrete slab.

Arches with a glass transom - an option in which the semicircular part is covered with a transom with stained or dark glass. Ideal for classic interiors, as it perfectly complements heavy carved doors and can be decorated with carved wooden inserts.

“Art Deco is an elegant interior arch in the shape of an ellipse. One of the most difficult and expensive options, which, however, is very much in demand by people with good taste, as it turns the interior of a standard room into a real masterpiece.

Individual design of arches - usually used when connecting a balcony to a room, as it creates a mini-office area and additionally has a practical function in the form of shelves for necessary books and documents, or a green greenhouse if the owners decide to place flowers and indoor plants on the shelves.

Decorating an arch with decorative stone in an apartment photo

An alcove, or otherwise an arched niche in the interior, which can be used to separate cozy corners for sofas, small work tables or elegant chests of drawers.

A special section is interior arches with additional functionality. Roughly they can be divided into three types:

Arch combined with shelves or racks.

Wide openings can be complemented with internal narrow shelves for books or elegant trinkets. Some of the shelves can be made blank to create an interesting relief, or framed in glass, placing, for example, a collection of car models or dolls in antique dresses.

Arches with tables

It could be a small dressing table or a table for a laptop or children’s drawing - in general, any option for one person’s activities that do not require a large space.

Interior arch with bar counter

A fashionable and convenient solution for the interior of a studio apartment, allowing you to save space. The space under the countertop can be used as a wine cooler or mini-fridge.

The decor of such an arch directly depends on the overall design of the room and is made from the same materials or types of wood as the rest of the furniture in the room.

What is better - a door or an arch?

It is impossible to answer this question unequivocally. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the detailed table to draw your own conclusions.

ArchDoor
VentilationThe arch prevents air from stagnating in the kitchen, but it does not prevent odors from spreading throughout the apartment.A tight door requires a good exhaust hood, but helps to completely avoid odors in other rooms.
Noise insulationIt does not control noise, so it is not suitable for apartments with children.A quality door can significantly reduce noise levels.
ErgonomicsThe arched opening does not take up space. The door frame takes up to 20 centimeters of usable space.
Operating restrictionsNot allowed in kitchens with gas stoves. There are no restrictions.
Visual propertiesMakes the room appear larger and taller.Depends on the model.

Important! To install the arch, be sure to completely remove the entire doorway. This means that you will face lengthy and “dirty” repair work.

As you can see, it is impossible to give a clear answer. It all depends on your preferences. Therefore, we advise you to carefully consider the moment of installing the arch and, if you decide that the pros outweigh the cons, move on to the next section.

Making an arch with your own hands

You can quickly make an elegant arch using plastic and laminated elements; step-by-step instructions on how to make an arch are presented below. They are cut to the required height and then attached according to the instructions in the right places. These are standard options that are made according to a single template; they do not surprise the buyer in any way, and the price is not always tempting. Yes, and choosing a model of the required size for your opening is sometimes very problematic.

To make the structural elements of the arch, you will need the following materials: fiberboard, plasterboard and plywood. How to make an arch with your own hands? If you watched how professional builders work with plasterboard boards, you probably guessed that they are best chosen for sheathing. After installation, they can be finished with various materials. In turn, thin plywood has one big advantage - it bends easily.

The arch frame is made of a bar with a cross-section of 20 x 20 mm (30 x 30 mm) or a metal profile.

finishing options with molding, stone and wood

An arch in your corridor or hallway is an excellent tool for visually expanding space or original apartment design. Moreover, there are a huge number of options that make it possible to make a seemingly simple design interesting and original.

Variety of arch shapes

There are many types of arched openings - they differ in size, shape, and style. In addition, there are several styles: classic, gothic, modern, romantic. The main difference between the above types lies primarily in the form, as well as in the way the arched openings are designed. Thus, the classical type involves an opening in the form of an arc of a traditional radius; in order to design an arch corresponding to the Art Nouveau style, you need to resort to elliptical shapes, the Gothic style requires the use of straight lines, pointed arches, and romance is a combination of smooth lines that make up an elegant composition.

Of course, you should choose the shape of the arched opening based on the design of the entire room: in a romantic interior, a Gothic arch would be inappropriate. Do not forget also about the height of the ceilings: if it is less than 2.5 m, then installing and decorating entrance arches, which inevitably “steal” the height, will make the room uncomfortable. The simplest option for such cases is to simply round the corners of the opening - this will add originality to the room without requiring much effort.

Pros of arches

It would seem that it is just the design of the doorway; it cannot have fundamental significance in the decor of the room. But no! The effect of the arch is enormous, and is expressed in the following advantages:

The only thing that an arch will not give you is privacy, but if this prospect does not scare you, then decorating and arranging an arch is exactly what you need to refresh the design of the room.

And then, decorating your house with an arch is much faster and easier than installing a full-fledged door. And the financial side of the issue is not the least important - the arch will cost less than the door structure.

Molding trim

This is a great option when you want to somehow decorate an arch, emphasizing it. Molding is a ready-made artistic decorative element made of plaster, polyurethane or metal. Place them at the end of the arch, selecting elements that suit the style, and secure with liquid nails. In addition to their aesthetic function, moldings successfully hide the junctions of two surfaces, they protect the most vulnerable parts of the structure and visually expand the room.

Decorating the opening with wood

Another popular and affordable option is wood. It is easy to process, absolutely safe, environmentally friendly, and in the interior it looks original and very dignified: a corridor with a wooden arch will give your home status. But wood is very sensitive to high humidity - be sure to take this property into account before decorating the opening with the kitchen area. All wooden elements must be treated - coated with special protective compounds, varnish or paint - then the wooden arch will last a long time.

Stone cladding

Stone, as a decorative element for arched openings, is used in several forms:

Decorative stone tiles are characterized by a textured front surface and a smooth back side - this makes the installation process easier. It is also worth considering the size of individual elements - if your room is designed in a rustic or rustic style, you can use a large stone.

There are enough finishing options, choose according to your taste and enjoy the result.

Finishing an arched kitchen doorway

If you have chosen an arched opening to the kitchen, then you should think about how best to decorate it.

Plaster

The most budget option for finishing an arched opening. This finishing method is very simple and absolutely anyone can handle it. Using plaster, you can imitate any type of finish, which is especially important if the budget for repairs has been allocated small. In addition, you can install lighting.

Stone

An excellent finishing option. With the help of stone, the transition from the kitchen to another room will look presentable and quite original. Working with stone will require skill and it is better to hire a specialist for this task. Stone is quite an expensive material, but durable and reliable in use. The stone arch in its appearance will be referred to the Middle Ages.

Brick

A finishing option that will help diversify the classic interior of the room will make it somewhat brutal and contrasting against the background of everything else.

Mosaic

An excellent decoration option. If you already have experience in laying tiles, then dealing with mosaics will not be difficult. The only thing you need to remember is that to install it you will need a perfectly flat surface of the arched opening.

Tree

Wooden trim looks very elegant and impressive. This is the most practical material of all, which is perfect for the kitchen. The only difficulty lies in the actual bending of wooden products, with which you need to be extremely careful. Therefore, to decorate an arch with wooden elements, it is better to hire a specialist who will carry out the work at the highest level.

Tips for choosing

When choosing methods for decorating an entrance without a door, it is imperative to take into account the characteristics of the kitchen area and the entire apartment as a whole.

Advice: if the walls around the opening are wider than 0.8 m, then you can decorate the projections with shelves and niches - such a solution will greatly increase the ergonomics and functionality of the space.

The color of the finishing panels can be contrasting with the walls, but should not stand out from the overall color scheme; the ideal option is when the passage lining matches the shade of the floor or ceiling. An effective solution would be to use asymmetrically shaped openings, but they will look most advantageous in tandem with plain walls.

Doorway decor: design ideas

Standard design The method of finishing an opening with the letter “P” remains simple, unpretentious, but at the same time laconic and elegant. In this case, the door leaf is removed, the frame is removed, and the resulting space is decorated using any of the above methods:

1. Clinker. 2. Polyurethane stucco. 3. Stone. 4. Plastic panels.

Finishing the opening with the letter “P”

Arched design If you look at it from a design point of view, an arched doorway looks the most impressive. Such solutions are very successful when organizing passages in narrow corridors and tiny hallways. With their help, it is possible to correct the spatial perception of these rooms and make the atmosphere in them more airy.

Arched design is ideal for narrow openings

The main thing is to decide exactly how to design the arched arc of the doorway.

Designers advise: – For rooms with low ceiling heights, use arches with a corner radius larger than half the width of the opening being designed. In this case, the arc will turn out to be gentle, and the formed passage will appear wider, which in combination will slightly visually lift the overhanging ceiling.

Gentle arched design for rooms with low ceilings

– In the version with a classic arch, maintain the radius of the arc in a size directly proportional to half of the opening. Arches of this type traditionally decorate rooms with high ceiling heights.

Arched opening for spacious rooms

– Do not get hung up on standard visions of arched structures and decorate the doorway with arches not only of straight, classic and round shapes, but also in the form of an ellipse, trapezoid or, in general, asymmetry shifted to one side.

Arched doorway of original shape

You can select arches for the interior according to stylistic characteristics and decorate them in accordance with the traditions of the direction. Thus, arches in Art Nouveau are distinguished by an arc with a rise. In the classics, the arched arc has the correct radius. In romanticism, the place above the opening bears little resemblance to an arc. Only the corners of the transition to the transverse supports are rounded here. An ellipsoidal arc and other extraordinary solutions are the prerogative of modern minimalist interiors.

Kitchen arches and doorways to the ceiling

In one article we looked at the topic - is a door needed in the kitchen, or is it better to dismantle it? So for those residents who decided to demolish the kitchen door, today the conversation will begin.

If you are determined to remove the kitchen door, then the doorway will need to be redone somehow. And here another question arises: what is better? Build a beautiful arch, or disassemble a doorway to the ceiling. And thereby give the kitchen a feeling of spaciousness and height.

For clarity, we will show you several photos of kitchen openings. Both with and without arches. And you decide for yourself what you like best and what is suitable for your kitchen.

Photo of openings to the ceiling in the kitchen

Let's start our photo review of arches and openings from the kitchen of a two-room apartment, panel house P44T. As you can see in the photo, if the kitchen opening is removed completely to the ceiling, the kitchen becomes even more spacious and it is visually felt that the ceiling has risen to the skies.

Another photo of a kitchen opening up to the ceiling, taken in the kitchen of a two-room apartment in a vest.

In this photo, a kitchen opening was made in a one-room apartment of a P44T panel house

Here is an interesting job on decorating a kitchen doorway in a two-room apartment. The ventilation shaft was lined with stone tiles on all sides.

The beauty of the doorway was let down by the box running along the wall.

Photo of classic round arches in the kitchen opening

Let's now look at the classics of the genre. And we are presented with a kitchen in a two-room apartment of the line, panel house P44T. The kitchen arch is made in a classic way, creating at the edges the effect of resting the upper semicircle on pillars.

This is already a kitchen with a bay window in a two-room apartment. We see how residents did not build a kitchen arch themselves, but bought and installed a ready-made arch in the kitchen opening.

So, the next photo shows us a classic arch with a semicircular top. But along the edges the arch is made without the effect of resting the upper part on the pillars. Thanks to this, visually, some kind of lightness and freedom appears in the design. It seems that the arch is hanging in the air.

Another example of a classic kitchen arch, without support on pillars. The semicircle is deep. It sounds like something oriental.

Well, here they didn’t make a deep semicircle.

That everything is circles and circles - let the semi-diamond be an arch.

Photos of kitchen semi-arches - in the top five popular styles in the kitchen. One edge of such an arch is smooth, and the other is rounded. Giving the doorway the appearance of a drawn bow.

It seems that in the photo above and in the photo below the semi-arches are identical in meaning. But the difference, as they say, is obvious.

They added some edging around the edges of the semi-arch, and it looks much more beautiful.

Well, the last kitchen semi-arch in our collection.

Photo of kitchen arches with plasterboard shelves - if you’re tired of all the classic arches, it doesn’t matter. Using drywall, you can make any arches to your taste. At the end of the article I would like to show a very interesting kitchen arch with shelves, made of plasterboard material. Such a beautiful arch with shelves was made in a one-room apartment in a P44T panel house

Especially in the evening, when you turn on the arch lighting, it will sparkle in all its glory. And it will delight not only your eye for a long time, but also all the guests who come to visit you.

This is the unusual arched photo report we got. I hope now you already know what your kitchen doorway, or maybe an arch, will look like?

At what angle should you start gluing wallpaper in the room?

In what cases can and cannot be removed?

It makes no sense to solve this issue separately from the general concept and layout of the apartment. Before you get rid of doors in your kitchen, answer the following questions:

  1. How big is your kitchen?
  2. Is there a gas stove or water heater?
  3. How big is the room where the door opens?
  4. Do you tolerate food smells in other rooms?
  5. How is ventilation arranged? Is there a powerful hood?
  6. Does each family member have their own room?
  7. Do you often have noisy gatherings in the kitchen?
  8. Do you perceive the kitchen as a “place for personal space”?
  9. Do you leave overnight guests in the kitchen?

Without answers to these questions, we do not recommend removing the door between the kitchen and the adjacent room. And in some cases it is even prohibited by law.

If your kitchen has an area of 12 square meters or less, and it has a gas heater or stove, then according to fire safety regulations, the door is not allowed to be removed.

“But no one will check,” you say. Yes, but exactly until the moment you decide to sell the apartment. In this case, a violation will be detected, and this is fraught with a fine and restoration of the classic doorway.

Now let's discuss this solution in terms of comfort and functionality.

In what cases is door demolition recommended:

  • it is always open anyway and only gets in the way;
  • it can be dismantled along with part of the wall - and get the effect of high ceilings and more space;
  • you need to combine or zone the space using a bar counter, portal, arch, etc.
  • the doorway leads into the corridor;
  • if you have a limited budget and want to save on doors;
  • you live alone and do not need doors.

Disadvantages of this solution:

  • poor sound insulation - all household members will hear the rattling of pots and the sound of water pouring from the tap;
  • different “aromas” penetrating from the kitchen into the room;
  • costs for a powerful hood;
  • not suitable for a one-room apartment;
  • it will become colder in the kitchen - due to the fact that the radiator will not heat the open room as well as the closed one;
  • risks for small children (who may get burned, turn on the gas, etc.);
  • there is no personal space for those who work in the kitchen - and for those who live in small apartments, this is the only place where they can have a personal life in principle;
  • the need to maintain perfect order in the kitchen is, of course, not a requirement, but a recommendation. Your guests or household members are unlikely to enjoy watching the mess from the living room after preparing dinner. But you could close the door to the kitchen and clean up in the morning.

How to close the arch?

Even if you decide to combine a room or corridor with a kitchen using an arch, you may need to temporarily close it. In this case, you have several options.

The most popular are regular curtains. Choose the type that suits your interior. However, curtains are not very practical - the fabric absorbs odors and therefore requires constant washing.

Plastic or wooden blinds, vertical or horizontal, are more functional. Depending on their shape, they can visually make the room taller or wider, and when folded they are almost invisible.

An alternative option is roller or Roman blinds, which fold into a small compact roller and, if necessary, unfold.

A fashionable technique is glazing the arch. Sliding glass panels, if necessary, act as a door, closing the arch.

Advice! Such panels are suitable if you want to install an arch in a kitchen with a gas stove. Nominally they can be considered a door.

Corridor Design with Arch

We are looking for two authors for our site who are VERY well versed in interior design. Contact by mail 12/19/2017

Many of us, sooner or later, begin to think about the renovation, design and decoration of the corridor. And it doesn’t matter at all why such thoughts came to you - a general renovation of the apartment or a simple desire to change the design of the environment itself. One way or another, if you have decided to take this brave step and, moreover, you want to apply some drastic solution, then this article is definitely for you.

Today we will tell you about how you can radically transform your corridor through extraordinary finishing. We will talk about various arches, the process of their creation and application. After all, it would seem that the arch is such a small thing, but in fact this type of decoration has quite a lot of possibilities.

Main features of arches

We'll start by looking at all the main possibilities that the arch provides us. No matter how miniature she may seem, the range of her positive qualities is quite high. So, what are the main features it has:

It is all these features that characterize the advantages of the arch over classic doors. Of course, there is one serious drawback - when using an arch, you will not be able to close yourself from prying eyes. But if your family is small and there is no need for privacy, then you can safely implement this option.

Saving space

The first and, perhaps, the most basic feature of any arch is that it can significantly save your free space. After all, it is classic doors that require space for free opening and closing. And they themselves are often very massive.

But when using an arch there is no such problem. It is for this reason that it is most often used in small apartments, where free space is worth its weight in gold. In addition, this is a great option for creating a unique design for your hallway.

Possibility of combining premises

It is thanks to the use of an arch that two rooms can be combined. Moreover, not only on a visual level, but also on a physical level. We are talking about a single stylization of the corridor and, for example, the living room, connected by an arched opening. It is thanks to the combination of these two factors - visual perception and unity of style, that a certain, harmonious atmosphere is created.

Moreover, such a combination is most often used when completely stylizing an apartment. An ideal example of this would be an interior decorated in a romantic style. Even if you do not want to carry out a single stylization of the entire apartment, you can use a corridor with an arched opening as an intermediate link in your rooms.

Visual increase in space

A little earlier we touched on the topic of visual perception. However, let's look at this from the point of view not of the general style, but specifically of your corridor. If there are no doors and there is a properly designed arch, your corridor will have much more natural light.

And this is a very important parameter, especially for small rooms, which is the corridor. After all, it is sunlight that visually expands any space, filling it with warmth and comfort. And from a psychological point of view, bright rooms are perceived much more pleasant than dark ones.

Simplicity and convenience

Among other things, creating an arch is much easier than installing classic doors. After all, you just need a little knowledge, a little more finishing material and good imagination. And the designs of the arches themselves are not very different from each other, which will allow you, even without practical experience, to easily create the option you choose.

It is worth talking separately about the financial side of the issue. After all, the process of creating an arch is quite a budget option than installing classic doors. Thus, you can not only save your money, but also add that same variety to your corridor.

Color solutions

Manufacturers offer customers a huge selection of different colors of door panels. The main criterion for choosing a color is the style of the interior.

Each decor has certain characteristics that must be taken into account when choosing doors:

  • Timeless classic. For classic styles, it is highly recommended to choose a solid wood product in a natural wood color. As a rule, this color is brown and its various shades: from light to thick and dark colors. As a budget substitute, you can choose MDF or chipboard. If the walls are decorated in light colors, then dark wood models will look great against their background and vice versa.
  • East. Arched structures fit harmoniously into eastern directions. Models decorated with patterns and carvings are perfect. The best material is natural wood in dark colors. Inserts made of colored glass in warm colors will complement the look of oriental decor.

Homely and cozy country. Moorish or horseshoe-shaped doors would look ideal in this style.

It is better to pay attention to models made of wood in warm colors. The natural pattern of the array will complement the atmosphere of the village

An atmosphere of calm and comfort will instantly reign in the room.

Shabby chic. Doors with an aging effect will fit into the concept of this direction. Imitation of cracked paint and scuffs will fit perfectly into this decor. Doors in light colors are perfect: white, beige, peach and other similar shades.

Peculiarities

As you know, a kitchen is a room where food is constantly processed and dishes are prepared. Most of the time it is filled with vapors and food odors. All this makes the room damp and quickly dirty, which makes it much more difficult to maintain the doors, shortening their service life, and this is especially unpleasant if they are made from expensive types of wood.

But this is not the only problem - it is known that doors visually make already small rooms smaller. In addition, the need to open the doors reduces the space for arranging functional areas - the designers calculated that a standard swing model hides about 1 square meter. m area.

An open doorway, on the contrary, will visually expand the boundaries of the kitchen and ergonomically combine the kitchen with the living room or dining room.

The advantages of open openings also include aesthetics and a non-standard appearance - with proper and stylish decor, the passage can look very stylish.

The absence of a door leaf blocking the movement of air masses promotes normal air circulation and maintains a favorable microclimate in the room.

However, not everyone likes doorways without a door, since they do not allow the room to be completely isolated.

In fairness, it should be noted that when it comes to the kitchen, this is not critical, unless, of course, the door is needed to separate the room from the bedroom or children's room.

Drywall bending

To construct an arch, you can purchase arched plasterboard. It is more plastic and, since its thickness is less than ordinary sheets, it bends easily. However, buying a whole sheet is quite expensive. Some stores sell this material not in sheets, but in pieces, which is very convenient. If it is not possible to purchase a small piece, you can also bend a regular sheet of drywall.

Thin arched drywall bends easily, but costs more

To do this, you can use two methods: wet and dry. In the first case, in order for moisture to better penetrate deep into the sheet, the drywall blank should be rolled with a needle roller before bending.

Before bending, the workpiece is rolled with a needle roller

Next, the sheet is evenly moistened with water and placed on a curved surface that follows the shape of the arch, pressing down with a weight. A device for drying the workpiece can be cut from the remains of drywall or plywood.

Wet bending

Important! With any bending method, it should be taken into account that drywall bends well only along the length of the sheet. When dry bending, cuts are made along the entire length of the bend.

Moreover, the larger the bending radius, the more often such notches should be applied. This can be done quickly with a grinder, however, since this creates a lot of gypsum dust, it is better to do the work outside

Arch design options in the corridor

The recording shows how you can make an arch from plasterboard yourself.

Frame installation

After dismantling the door frame, the surface is cleaned of loose plaster, dust and dirt and all irregularities are knocked down. Next, two rack-mount metal profiles are secured to the sides of the doorway using self-tapping dowels in increments of 20-30 cm. In this case, you should retreat 11-12 mm from the edge for installing drywall and applying putty. If the opening width is large (more than 1 m), jumpers are attached between the two guides. Small sections of profiles connecting two side guides are also mounted in the lower part of the opening. They should rest against the floor.

At the top of the doorway, two curved profiles are mounted in the form of an arc. If necessary, they are also connected to each other by jumpers.

Fastening the upper part of the profile

Types of openings

The geometry of the doorway is limited only by your imagination, and the most popular options are rectangular configurations and arches.

To install a standard rectangular opening, redevelopment and partial destruction of the wall are not required (of course, if its dimensions are standard, that is, 200x70 cm). This option is harmonious in interiors of a variety of styles. As a rule, such entrances do not require special design.

If you want to make the interior softer, you can round the edges of the opening. To do this yourself, you can use wooden elements, hardboard and other suitable materials. Such an opening looks elegant and light, it is appropriate in classic interiors, and favorably sets off Provence, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and many other trends.

Arched openings are no less popular; in this case, the upper part is first raised, only then given a rounded shape. Depending on the design decision, the arch can be high or flattened - in both cases it is extremely important to maintain the overall symmetry of the structure, however, there are also asymmetrical models.

Do-it-yourself arch: step-by-step instructions (plasterboard), 3 methods

An arched opening in the Modern style is distinguished by a small radius of curvature and a sharp transition at the junction with the vertical components of the opening. It looks good if the walls and ceiling have a more or less simple design. Looks great in the place of the former balcony door, good at the entrance to the office. Then the plates begin to be attached to the opening, periodically strengthening them with self-tapping screws for reliability.

Place washers under the heads so as not to push through the cardboard. Remove excess putty immediately. If it gets stuck, it’s impossible to tear it off. The finished surface is treated with a primer to improve adhesion (adhesion), and then puttied, leveling the arch. To make it easier to display, you can use a template attached on both sides.

Next came the finishing work: a special corner is attached to the corner, everything is puttied using the usual technology: first the starting joints and corners, then the finishing one. Next, you need to cut out a rectangle from drywall that will cover the structure from below. Its width is determined simply - from the outer edge of one sheet of plasterboard to the outer edge of the second sheet. The length is measured with a flexible tape (can be a tailor's tape) or a tape measure with an assistant. We attach this sheet with self-tapping screws to the arch frame.

The sheet has to be bent, but read how to do this a little lower - closer to the end of the article. To understand how your chosen shape will look, you can cut out a template from cardboard and attach it to the doorway. Evaluate the effect.

If everything suits you, you can make a blank using this template. But only one - for one of the sides of the opening. The second one needs to be done in place, otherwise it will turn out crooked.

PVC

You can make PVC arches yourself, or you can order ready-made ones and install them in the doorway. Our task is to do it ourselves, so let’s figure out how it’s done. So, there are a very large number of PVC panels. They come in different colors and even sizes. There are special profiles and corners for them. The panels are attached in almost the same way as lining or panels made of other materials. The main method is a special tongue-and-groove lock plus a profile.

In order to figure out how to make a doorway with a PVC arch, first look at the opening itself. In order to make a doorway into an arch, we look at the doorway itself. If there is an old box there, it must be dismantled. The main thing is that the opening is clean.

So, after dismantling work, which, by the way, is far from uncommon, you can already make an arch in the doorway. We are talking about independent execution, so there are two ways to do this. If the arch in the doorway is made rectangular, then there is no need to make a lath; it is enough to use a wall profile for PVC along with corners. You need to cut the panels correctly to get the desired width. After this they must close the opening. The side parts can be secured with self-tapping screws and covered with a profile. However, such an arch is good when the walls are smooth.

You can make a doorway arch from PVC using this method yourself, but you can buy it. The finished one, as a rule, already has decorative elements; all that remains is to install the arches in the doorways. They can also be made to order. Therefore, it is worth first deciding how many doorways with arches there will be in the house.

Design of a plasterboard arch in the living room, kitchen and hallway

Today, open-plan living spaces are in fashion. But even in a studio apartment it is necessary to zoning the space, otherwise the owners will feel uncomfortable. One of the zoning options is to install partitions with arched openings. The use of arches is also possible in an ordinary apartment; this avoids the installation of doors, which saves space. To make the openings look beautiful, they are decorated using various finishing materials. Interesting ideas about what an arch design could be can be seen in photos of the interiors of modern apartments.

The main function of interior arches is to create a smooth transition from one zone to another. Arched openings are often used to decorate the space between the kitchen and the hallway or living room. Depending on the location, the design of the arched opening is selected; it should be in harmony with the style of the interior in which the room is decorated.

Looking at photos of various interiors, it can be noted that designers always pay a lot of attention to the design of arches, since this element inevitably attracts attention. It is not necessary to exactly copy other people’s ideas; you can come up with something of your own, the main thing is that it matches the overall interior of the rooms in which the arch is installed.

Types of arches

Interior arches can have different shapes, sizes and designs. It is necessary to think in advance about how to finish the arches. It is clear that the design of the opening between the kitchen and the living room will differ from its design in the corridor.

Dimensions

The use of arches in an apartment is not limited to the design of openings between rooms. In this way, a niche in the wall or an alcove in which the bed is located can be framed.

But, most often, arches are used when constructing interior partitions, for example, between the living room and kitchen. In a long corridor, it can be used to separate the hallway area from the interior spaces.

The dimensions of the arch are determined by the purpose of this structure. For example, in a light plasterboard partition, with the help of which zoning is carried out in a studio apartment, it can be very large. After all, it only marks the boundaries, and does not provide a complete separation of the premises.

Advice! Large arches are often installed in the kitchen, separating the work area from the dining room, and the wide one between the kitchen and dining area can be supplemented with a bar counter.

Narrow openings are often used in small apartments for installation in interior openings. This design of openings avoids the need to install interior doors.

After all, doors take up quite a lot of space, and in small apartments it is better to avoid installing doors in the kitchen or living room. A narrow arch can be installed in a long corridor to separate the hallway area.

Advice! When planning to install a wide arch in the corridor, you need to remember that the adjacent rooms separated by it must be decorated in the same style and color scheme.

What to make the structure from

A plasterboard arch is mounted in the same way as all other structures consisting of a frame.

Attention! Install arches only in openings whose height exceeds two meters. The design takes 0.1-0.15 m from the height of the opening.

Before you start installing the arch in the apartment, stock up on tools and materials for construction. To make an arch you will need:

  1. Metal profiles: guides (28*27) and rack (60*27)
  2. Screws for working with metal and dowel screws
  3. Plasterboard sheets for arc and side walls
  4. Arched corner to strengthen the arced edge
  5. Self-tapping screws

To perform the zone delimitation action, you will need the following tools:

  1. Tape measure
  2. Screwdriver manual or electric
  3. Metal cutting scissors
  4. Drill
  5. Stationery and regular knives
  6. Marking pencil
  7. Nail
  8. Nylon thread

The listed tools and materials are inexpensive. A drill and screwdriver for one-time work can be rented at a tool rental.

Zoning options

Cooking area and dining group

With the help of slats or a screen, you can separate the place where you cook directly from the dining group from each other. This option can be used if you like to have breakfast or lunch in privacy or often receive guests.

Kitchen corner and sitting area

The most popular zoning scheme: a partition between the kitchen and the living room. In this case, the dining group can be located in any part: either closer to the set, as part of the kitchen corner, or near the sofa group.

The choice of separator in this case depends on the lifestyle and wishes of the owners. If the smells of food are not distracting and you like to communicate with family or friends while cooking, you can choose a bar counter, a lightweight slatted or glass structure that will draw a nominal boundary. If you need to strictly separate and, if necessary, completely isolate one part of the room from another, false walls and solid mobile structures with a sliding mechanism are suitable.
