Curtains in the Loft style - modern ideas for interior design. TOP 100 photos of beautiful design and combination

The industrial loft style was invented by creative people. It is well suited for large, studio spaces with high ceilings and huge panoramic windows. But with the classic design, there was no room for any curtains. Modern designers have added their own touch to the attic area. Curtains in the loft style are a necessity and part of the image of the room, and certain requirements are imposed on them.

Features of textiles in loft style

Initially, lofts were the name given to the premises of abandoned factories, to which creative individuals gave a second life. And so it turned out that the loft is a spacious, functional room without unnecessary decor, with high ceilings and an abundance of daylight that floods the room through uncovered windows.

Initially, no curtains were provided for the windows. Rooms without curtains can be found in public places. Residential premises require more privacy and comfort. Curtains in them are used not only to decorate windows, but also to divide space into zones.

Acceptable colors

The color of curtains in the interior can be different, but always monochromatic and dim. Textiles should not draw attention to themselves. Beige, brown, gray are the most common loft colors, symbolizing restraint, dignity and respectability. Other pastel colors are allowed - black and white, as well as red and dark blue, if they are consistent with the tone of upholstered furniture or other interior items.

The combination of the color of textiles with the wallpaper of the room is welcome.

History and concept

The movement began at the end of the 20th century in the USA, which is why the style is also called “New York”. At that time, New York's industrial industry was collapsing and factories were closing. To prevent the premises from standing idle, the owners rented them out as residential.

The rental price was lower than usual, and among the tenants there were many creative, not rich people. They gave the empty buildings, without partitions, with bare walls and huge windows, a residential appearance. For this purpose we used furniture, textiles and zoning instead of the usual division into rooms.

Key points in window design

At first the windows were not covered with anything. There was no need for this - the premises were in the attic or outside the city. And the tenants had no time for curtains. But today it has become necessary to close housing from prying eyes and the abundance of sunlight in the city. This is how an interior with loft style curtains appeared.

There are photos of curtains in the loft style on the Internet, from which you can highlight the main points when choosing such curtains:

  • lightweight fabrics that transmit or diffuse light;
  • simple design - no prints or decoration. No bows, ruffles, waves. Curtains should fall from the eaves, forming clear, straight lines;
  • light – choose curtains made from light fabrics that transmit and diffuse light.

Curtain sizes

First you need to choose a curtain model that best fits the design of your room and complements the window. After this, you need to calculate the length and width of the window. The length of the curtain is calculated from the cornice to the floor. Cornices can be attached either to the ceiling or to the wall. The height of the required curtains is measured after the cornice has already been fixed.

For the Loft style, curtains of any length are suitable

Material

Dense synthetic fabrics are not suitable for windows; they will not add freedom and light to the space. An exception is thick curtains to separate zones in the room. The following fabrics are ideal:

  • Linen is a hypoallergenic natural fabric that is highly breathable. Resistant to frequent washing and ironing, which means it will fit well into the kitchen interior;
  • cotton - the strength and antistatic properties of the material will serve well in the loft style, the curtains will fall in clear lines, symbolizing the same columns;
  • tulle - organza, veil, muslin. But you should be careful with them; they are not used in classic loft designs. Tulle will add comfort and coziness to the room, which is sometimes lacking in a classic functional loft;
  • matting is a dense three-layer fabric that holds its shape well and drapes beautifully in clear lines;
  • taffeta - the smoothness and shine of the fabric will add gloss and sophistication to your loft. It is worth considering that taffeta is not a type of material as such, but a way of weaving threads - cotton, silk or synthetic polymers. Taffeta folds are hard and brittle;

Double

Multi-layering is not encouraged in the loft, with the exception of the bedroom. Light-scattering tulle fabrics are used as the first layer. Moreover, it is not necessary to take just a tulle fabric; you can use Roman blinds made of translucent material.

The second layer is a dense flowing fabric. When the window is open, it creates straight lines and vaguely resembles the columns that were often found in the attics of former factories.

Types of fastening to the cornice

In loft interiors, for hanging free-hanging curtains, round cornices made of metal or wood, string or track structures, covered with a decorative wood strip can be used; examples of them are presented in the photo. Methods for attaching the panel to the cornice:

  • Eyelets - metal, wood or plastic imitations. This fastening is usually used for fairly dense fabrics.
  • Loops. They are made from the same fabric that was used to sew the curtain, or a companion fabric.
  • Drawstrings, otherwise called sleeves. This mounting method is well suited for industrial style.
  • Rings - metal, wood or plastic, stylized as metal or wood.

For Japanese panels, special guides are provided, located in one or several rows; for lifting models, there are cornices to which the panel is attached with Velcro.

Curtains

Open curtains on a rigid metal fastener closely resemble columns in attics and bare windows. At the same time, there is something cozy about them. This option is perfect for the living room or kitchen if you make them shorter.
