Story

Atre Deco got its name in 1925 after an exhibition of modern decorative and industrial art (“Internationale des Arts Decoratifs Industriels et Modernes”) was held in Paris, in which many countries, including the USSR, took part. It presented many innovative developments in the field of architecture and interior design for that time. In the 20s and 30s of the twentieth century, interior design in the Art Deco style was popular among designers. This is how residential apartments, banquet halls of expensive restaurants, and exhibition galleries were decorated.

The style has absorbed the spirit of the times and travel; it is filled with ideas from historical eras and the latest discoveries. For example, the interiors reflect the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and the study of Aztec and Mayan traditions.

A new wave of popularity covered Art Deco at the end of the twentieth century. Designers rethought the main features of the style, and it triumphantly returned to European interiors. Now they began to combine expensive equipment and furniture along with luxury decoration of the rooms.

Play of colors: basic shades in Art Deco

Art Deco designs tend to be very eclectic, so it's important to be careful when choosing colors. The design contains a large number of different textures and materials. Such combinations require a calm shade range.

Accent color - black. It can be used if the room has sufficiently bright lighting. Dark furniture looks great. If you like this option, choose a few pastel colors to decorate the walls. The result is an exquisite contrast between furnishings and decor.

The proximity of white and black colors, typical for the trend, can be played up in the design of the floor. For example, lay the surface with tiles. This technique is called a “chessboard” and is often used in design.

Popular colors in Art Deco:

  • Eggplant;
  • Burgundy;
  • Dark blue;
  • Muted yellow;
  • Lavender;
  • Violet;
  • White;
  • Brown.

Your task is to play with colors and create an attractive range of pastels, blurry-dirty and accent tones. The photo shows examples of interesting symbioses of different shades.

Color palette

Let's return to the color scheme of the room. Art Deco colors can be safely called noble. That is, not gray, but silver, not yellow, but golden, not dark red, but royal burgundy.

To create a bohemian atmosphere, you need to be very careful when choosing shades. There are classic combinations, for example:

  • wenge – gold – beige;
  • interior in black with the addition of beige and silver;
  • use of pastel colors (bleached burgundy, beige, gilding);
  • dark green room with gold trim and dark wood furniture;
  • pronounced contrasts in which white color is actively used.

The era of the appearance of the style is also characterized by lavender, eggplant, dark blue, and muted yellow colors.

Decorative elements in Art Deco

In this style, decor is welcome. You can find use even for those accessories that are bad manners for other areas. Complex shapes, pretentiousness, combination of incongruous elements are the basic principles of a design project.

Mirrors

The key style accessory is mirrors. It is better to choose massive, large ones, framed with original frames. You can create mirror compositions from several minimalist copies. There are no strict requirements for the placement of products. They will look good in the living room, bedroom, hallway, bathroom.

Designer mirrors for Art Deco interiors can be of any shape. Oval and square specimens are especially popular. If you want something exclusive, pay attention to products in the form of a fish eye or models in a “sunny” frame. Faceted mirrors look very elegant in decor. An example of such a design is in the photo.

Paintings

Modern Art Deco design is bold decisions that are inappropriate for other styles. There is no place for small details in such an interior. Massive objects reign here, instantly attracting attention.

Framed pictures can be hung over sofas and beds. They will emphasize the originality of the furniture and dilute the atmosphere. If there are several paintings, make sure that the themes of the images are similar. For decoration, it is preferable to choose floral motifs, sketches of animals, and abstraction.

Vases and figurines

Decorative floor vases and all kinds of large figurines are also worthy of being present in the interior. You can purchase several identical copies and place them in one room. In such an ensemble, moderation is important - 2-3 identical products are enough.

Lighting in an exclusive interior

An Art Deco room should be well lit. It is better to leave minimalistic lamps aside - massive, colorful pieces will win.

Carob chandeliers, floor and tabletop models with long legs are suitable. The more unusual they look, the better. You can successfully fit products with dark lampshades of different shapes into the interior.

Designers recommend using sconces as sources of additional lighting. The principles of choosing models remain the same - courage and originality.

Walls

Since the space is filled with exclusive bright objects, the walls are only a background that highlights them favorably. The walls are made monochromatic, sometimes decorated with patterned panels.

The following techniques are used to decorate walls:

  • textured plaster;
  • matte paint;
  • liquid wallpaper;
  • natural stone or ceramic tiles (mainly for the kitchen or bathroom).

Materials for embodying Art Deco traditions

In an Art Deco interior, beauty, not functionality, comes to the fore. Luxury materials and their successful imitations are suitable for decoration. The ambience is created by glossy stone surfaces, chromed metal, gilding, natural wood, leather, and animal skins.

Ceiling

Designers offer several options for ceiling design: multi-level structures, smooth surfaces with an interesting texture, stretched plasterboard sheets divided into several sectors.

In modern Art Deco rooms you can see stepped structures, where the lower tier is located against the walls. Closer to the middle of the canvas, the ceiling height increases. A decorative recess is formed in the very center where you can hang a luxurious chandelier.

Smooth surfaces are easy to beat with interesting textures. Ceilings decorated with suede or natural stone look majestic and attractive. White surfaces without frills are also acceptable, provided that the design of the room has enough colorful details.

Walls

Wallpaper is the leader among materials for wall decoration. Suitable options: black with gold-plated patterns, dim plain colors, with geometric shapes, stripes.

You can cover the surfaces with wooden decorative panels. This idea is suitable for the kitchen and bedroom, where noble materials look most appropriate.

Art Deco walls are immediately noticeable, so try to think through every detail carefully. If your budget does not allow you to choose expensive finishes, focus on decor.

Floor

The floor can be laid with colored or plain tiles. If there is a lot of decor in the room, it is better to make the coating as discreet as possible. Instead of tiles, laminate, parquet and wooden boards are often used. On such a floor, artificial or natural animal skins and carpets with hard short pile will look attractive.

Furniture

Art Deco interior furniture is selected mainly from natural wood. Its convenience and apparent simplicity are compensated by the excellent work of the craftsmen, unusual elements, patina and inlay.

All furniture should look expensive, noble and respectable. Therefore, if it is impossible to use natural leather for upholstery, you can use very high-quality fabric, but not artificial.

Richness of design

In addition to wood, chromed metal, marble and glass are actively used in the design. These can be individual pieces of furniture or components of single ensembles. For example, shelves, tables with glass tops, etc.

Cabinet furniture is characterized by the use of polished and varnished surfaces, beautiful facades and a touch of historicity on objects. A decent design will allow such an environment to serve for a long time, remaining fashionable and relevant.

Interiors of different rooms in the Art Deco style: tips and photo gallery

Each room in the house has its own character, which must be emphasized with competent design. Art Deco decor provides all the possibilities for this.

Welcoming hallway

It is better to choose wallpaper for wall decoration. To prevent the room from seeming gloomy, you should give preference to light materials. Circles and vertical stripes look great as a print on wallpaper.

If the corridor is long, wall lamps will be a winning decor option. Options with horns and crystal pendants are suitable. For small rooms, ceiling lamps framed with stucco are sufficient.

The floor is most often decorated in dark colors. You can use tiles, laminate or parquet as a covering. But we should say an unequivocal “no” to linoleum.

Idea! Lamps that imitate oil lamps will fit perfectly into an Art Deco style hallway.

Mysterious living room

The atmosphere in the living room mainly depends on the decor. You can install some upholstered furniture, such as armchairs or a sofa. Leather products or models decorated with a carriage screed look luxurious.

It's time to remember the main factor of choice - no minimalism! If the area of the room does not allow you to place large pieces of furniture, it is better to choose 2-3 key parts. To furnish a small room, a massive sofa, coffee table and chest of drawers are enough.

Leading shades in the design: white, black, gray, chocolate, lavender. If you give preference to one color, do not forget about bright accents.

The walls can be decorated with wallpaper, decorative plaster or wood panels. Surfaces with niches look impressive. Such recesses are convenient to use for placing paintings, lamps, and vases.

Cozy bedroom

The art of Art Deco style should be visible in the bedroom interior. Walls decorated with wallpaper imitating textiles or fabric trim will help create an ambience.

Natural wood furniture is another important attribute of the room. These can be beds, cabinets, coffee tables, wardrobes, rounded chests of drawers. Colors: pastel shades, gilding, accent black.

Modern Art Deco in the bedroom can be represented by discreet wall decor, several original lighting sources, carpets with ethnic patterns, and beveled mirrors.

Amazing kitchen

Marble panels are suitable for decorating the walls of an Art Deco kitchen. A budget option is tiles that imitate natural stone. You can decorate the walls with light material and make the apron dark.

It is also better to choose tiles for flooring. The winning tones are dark. They look great in contrast with light kitchen furniture.

An excellent solution for kitchen windows is stained glass. This design will be in harmony with the decoration and emphasize the uniqueness of the design.

Luxurious bathroom

Light wall decoration, dark floor tiles, African motifs and massive round lamps are the attributes of a modern Art Deco bathroom. The design should be dominated by pastel shades - they will make the room visually larger and more comfortable.

Modern Art Deco Bathroom Decor

Bathroom

The discreet luxury of Art Deco looks interesting in large bathrooms. As far as possible, chrome elements, glass, marble and glossy surfaces are used here. Preference is given to light shades, especially in the design of the ceiling.

If the walls and floor require the presence of dark tones, then the surfaces must be shiny. The patterns present in the design should emphasize, but not burden the perception of the room.

The use of ornaments and patterns from curls is possible directly on mirror surfaces.

In the bathroom interior

It is advisable to make the choice of plumbing fixtures in favor of white models with smooth, rounded lines. Faucets and other equipment are selected with chrome-plated surfaces.

Open shelves in the bathroom can be made of the following materials:

  • metal;
  • glass;
  • marble.

Discreet luxury

Zoning in Art Deco: partitions, columns, domed vault

Zoning elements are also found in a bohemian interior. These details should not stand out from the overall stylistic ensemble and create dissonance. Fabric partitions are definitely not suitable - they look too simple. It is better to make plasterboards and decorate them with the same materials as the walls.

A special chic is tinted mirror partitions. It is difficult to understand that another part of the room is hidden behind the glass. The solution is quite expensive, but the effect is admirable.

You can erect columns indoors and decorate them with stucco, tile mosaics, and leather. This type of zoning will be complemented by a domed vault. The combination of elements looks bohemian and impressive.

Floors

A floor with a glossy shiny surface is considered characteristic. For finishing the floor choose:

  • parquet with geometric patterns;
  • glossy large tiles;
  • polished marble.

For modern interiors, self-leveling flooring is chosen, usually plain or with a geometric pattern.

The power of fire: Art Deco fireplace

A fireplace is a symbol of comfort and luxury. If possible, complement your Art Deco room with this island of light and warmth. However, not every model will fit into the design.

Features of a fireplace in an Art Deco interior:

  • To decorate your living room, it is better to choose a real fireplace, but some electric models are also suitable. Pay attention to examples of strict forms - unlike the rest of the decor, the fireplace can be minimalistic;
  • The fireplace portal should be glossy and shiny;
  • Natural or artificial stone is most often used to decorate the fire source;
  • You can place statues and vases next to the fireplace. The shelf above the device is suitable for placing fancy piggy banks and stuffed animals.

Window decoration

Typically, windows are decorated with simple flowing curtains made of heavy fabric with drapery. Depending on the chosen interpretation of the interior - classical, historical or modern - you can choose multi-layer curtains with lambrequins, Japanese curtains in the form of smooth canvases or modern light curtains.

Accessories and decor

Art objects such as paintings, sculptures, and painted vases are used as accessories.

The interior is also filled with:

  • forged candlesticks;
  • large mirrors in gilded frames;
  • bronze or porcelain figurines.

Large specimens of exotic plants are also often placed in the office or living room, complementing the overall color.

Ceilings

Multi-level, suspended, with beautiful stucco molding and lighting - any of these ceilings can be in the Art Deco style. It is usually decorated with a large chandelier, around which there is a patterned rosette in the shape of a circle. If the ceilings in the room are not high enough, they are decorated with mirror panels. High ceilings are decorated with paintings and stucco, placing artistic elements at different levels.

A glossy stretch ceiling is great for living rooms and bedrooms; it can be complemented by spotlights and a central chandelier.
