Art Deco style in the interior: design examples, photos

All photos In the photo: Interior of a luxurious living room in an apartment in the Kutuzovskaya Riviera residential complex. The art deco style, which appeared in the 20s of the last century, the name of which comes from the French art déco, which means “decorative art,” is rightfully considered synonymous with luxury. It arose between the First and Second World Wars, during the era of jazz and luxury ocean cruise ships, and immediately fell in love with the elite of American and European society.

In this review, we will talk about the design features of an apartment in the Art Deco style, current planning and color solutions for the living room, bedroom, kitchen, hall, office, bathroom and, of course, modern decor ideas. And also, using the example of a photo from the portfolio of the Studio of Angelika Prudnikova, which is one of the few in Moscow where unique interiors of the “luxury” category are created, we will demonstrate what elite apartments look like in the art deco style.

Features and characteristics of the art deco style

Each interior style has its own characteristics, and art deco is no exception. In general, it continues the classical traditions, but can be either luxuriously ornate or rather laconic. As for the distinctive features of this style, it is worth talking about them in more detail.

Contrasting color scheme for the apartment interior

All photos In the photo: Living-dining room with fireplace
The interior in the Art Deco style is characterized by a contrasting color scheme, which designers call “piano keys.” The combination of black and white colors is very popular, which looks good in a modern space, a mix of creamy and chocolate shades, as well as a vanilla-truffle color scheme.

Abundance of glossy surfaces in decor and finishing

Plain glossy facades, mirror inserts on furniture, an apron and polished marble floor - the more reflective surfaces there are in the interior of a kitchen-living room in the art deco style, the more festive and expensive it is will look.

Shine of metal

All photos In the photo: TV area in the kitchen-living room
Nothing emphasizes success and prosperity more than the shine of noble metal. That's why there are a lot of metal elements in luxury interiors: lamp frames, furniture legs and fronts, moldings on wall panels, accessories. The metal can be any, but details in gold, chrome and brass look the most advantageous.

Mirror decor

All photos In the photo: Interior of a luxurious living room in the apartment of the residential complex "Kutuzovskaya Riviera"
The design of an apartment in the art deco style is unthinkable without mirror decor. These can be original panels made of beveled tiles of various shapes and sizes, cornices and edgings that are installed during renovation, furniture inserts or traditional mirrors in luxurious silver frames.

Expensive exclusive finish

The best way to emphasize the luxury and bright individuality of the interior is to choose an exclusive finish. For the Art Deco style, the ideal option would be expensive textured and textile wallpaper, stone veneer and panels covered with reptile skin.

Designer furniture

Furniture in the Art Deco style is distinguished by its original shape and decorativeness. Each item is decorated with inlays, carvings, metal plates, and edgings. In addition, several types of materials are often used in the manufacture of furniture, which provides the products with an original design.

Complex multi-level lighting

All photos In the photo: Relaxation area in the living room
LED lighting of ceiling niches and cornices, central chandelier, floor lamps, sconces - in the design of Art Deco apartments there is always complex multi-level light. This solution allows you to highlight all the nuances of the interior and implement several lighting scenarios.

Furniture

Furniture for luxury style has simple and luxurious shapes. The bed in the bedroom is always the central object, often it stands on chrome legs, has inlay and patina.

Art Deco style in the interior of apartments from our portfolio

The interior of an Art Deco apartment is distinguished by its strict lines and the presence of stylized ethnic motifs: Egyptian, African, Indian, ancient Greek. The rooms are decorated using expensive materials: precious wood, ivory, genuine leather with a spectacular design, brass, silver, chrome, crystal. And when implementing exclusive projects, enamel, mother-of-pearl and even polished precious stones are often used. At the same time, all rooms demonstrate a high level of comfort. Below are photographs from the design projects of Studio Anzhelika Prudnikova, giving a complete picture of what exclusive living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, offices, halls, bathrooms and dressing rooms look like in the Art Deco style.

Living room

The Art Deco living room is a symphony of brilliance, luxury and extraordinary comfort. Particular attention in this interior is paid to:

  • the design of the ceiling, which, as a rule, has a stepped relief, is decorated with stucco moldings, cornices, hanging figured and volumetric structures, LED lighting, stained glass windows;
  • color scheme – the most popular is the creamy chocolate range with a wide range of shades;
  • selection of finishes and accessories.

Art Deco in the bedroom interior

To describe the design of a bedroom in the Art Deco style, three words are enough: sophistication, elegance and convenience. The elegance of the interior is given by the classic color scheme and spectacular finishing - materials with a noble shine, geometric patterns and complex relief. And convenience is ensured by a competent layout.

A small niche near the entrance to the bedroom is an ideal place to place a mini-office with a console table and a couple of shelves.

Add mirrors, glass and other textures

The main decorative technique in Art Deco is a variety of textures. Mirrors reign among them (mirror walls and ceilings, mirror tiles, furniture elements) and glass (tables, partitions, glass or crystal chandeliers).

In addition to these materials, there are many other glossy surfaces in Art Deco: varnish, glossy paint, polished wood, shiny metal - it is clear that in order to contrast they need to be contrasted with something very textured. Usually these are fabrics, fur, reliefs and three-dimensional panels.

Exquisite art deco interiors are echoes of the era of “The Great Gatsby”, a dream come true of a luxurious life. So it is not surprising that this style is on the crest of popularity today. But to implement it in the design of an apartment, you will need a detailed project, which can be ordered from the Studio of Angelika Prudnikova.

A little history

First, let's figure out what art deco is and why it is called French modern. The name translates as decorative art.

And indeed, every thing, item, object visually turns the interior into a decoration for the action, which was invented by the main scriptwriter of the spectacle - the owner of the house. This is his performance, his personality, his rules of the game.

The style originated in the early 1910s and was officially presented in 1925 at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. There they gave it a name.

After the war, people wanted something graceful, festive, elegant. Filled with gloss, glamor and decorative power, the art style helped to distract from the gray everyday life of the post-war era.

Jazz was born in music, the great Gatsby dominated in literature, and the owners of houses and apartments plunged headlong into creating elegant luxury.

“Deco” is not called jazz modern for nothing. Like unexpected notes and musical passages, it helps to improvise when creating a setting. France, as usual, set the tone for fashion.
