High-quality finishing will enhance any bathroom, regardless of its size and other parameters. The bathroom should not only be clean, but also well renovated. High-quality repairs do not always require large financial investments. When choosing a bathroom finishing option, you should focus on renovations in other rooms of the house or apartment. The bathroom, kitchen, hall and other rooms should be done in the same style. It is better to choose certain colors as a base (yellow, red, blue, purple) and only change the shades when renovating the corresponding room. The walls and floors in the bathroom can be dark in color, but due to the lack of windows in the bathrooms in most apartments, additional artificial lighting should be taken care of so that the toilet does not look too gloomy.
Features of bathroom finishing
Bathroom finishing requires special attention due to constant humidity and frequent temperature changes. Only moisture-resistant and wear-resistant materials are suitable here. The ideal solution for wall decoration would be tiles, but you will have to forget about wooden panels. As for the color scheme, it is better to use light shades. In typical apartments, bathrooms are usually small, and dark colors visually make any room smaller. If there is a window in the bathroom, then for obvious reasons it needs to be curtained with thick curtains or blinds. Plumbing equipment must be of high quality, since the functionality of the bathroom is more important than its appearance. If your budget is limited, it is better to save on materials and buy inexpensive tiles or panels. Taps, showers, and toilets are used regularly, so they must be reliable and of high quality.
General information
When deciding how to renovate a bathroom with your own hands, you should choose materials. It is natural that they should not be “afraid” of moisture. It is worth noting that renovating a bathroom and toilet yourself is not such an impossible task. There are several tricks that will help you significantly reduce your budget. For example, professionals can be entrusted with specific and labor-intensive work, such as replacing a riser or wiring. Everything else can be done independently. In such matters, the financial aspect is usually the key one. Especially if the decision was made to renovate the bathroom on a turnkey basis. This includes more than just installing new plumbing or replacing tiles.
Requirements for finishing materials for the bathroom
It is better to choose finishing materials for the bathroom and the entire apartment that will be easy to install. This is true even if the premises are renovated by hired workers. If the tiles or panels in the bathroom are damaged, it will be better if the homeowner himself can fix them without resorting to expensive repairs. Materials used for the bathroom must be moisture-resistant and antiseptic. The air in the bathroom is saturated with a huge amount of water vapor, which can gradually destroy the finish. Fungus can easily form in bathrooms due to dampness and poor ventilation. To avoid this, you should buy special antiseptic materials. When taking a hot shower or bath, the energy of the water is automatically transferred to the air, causing it to become very hot and have a destructive effect on the lining. Also, the materials should be different:
- ease of maintenance and operation;
- environmental friendliness;
- chemical resistance;
- high strength, etc.
Floor finishing options
Most often, the bathroom floor is finished with linoleum, floor tiles, laminate or natural stone. Linoleum is the cheapest material of all listed. It is also the easiest to install, i.e. Even a non-professional can handle the installation of linoleum. But fungus and mold easily form under this material. Floor tiles are the most popular way to decorate a bathroom. It is moisture resistant, relatively easy to install and durable. But this material has poor thermal insulation, so you have to lay mats on the tile floor to avoid stepping on the icy floor after a shower. If you are laying laminate flooring, you need to choose varieties with high moisture resistance. But it is easy to use, durable, wear-resistant and has good thermal insulation. Natural stone flooring is expensive and looks stylish.
This material is wear-resistant and safe due to its porous surface structure.
Ceramic tile
There are several types of tiles for the bathroom floor. Ceramic tiles are the most chosen ones as they are affordable, durable and look good. It is distinguished by many shapes and colors. It is better to focus on the manufacturer and brand when choosing this material. Buyers also choose durable clinker. It is even and smooth. Cotto are tiles with increased porosity characteristics. This makes them extremely safe and suitable for homes with small children and elderly people. It is almost impossible to slip on such tiles. Porcelain tiles are an extremely durable material that perfectly withstands temperature changes typical of bathrooms. All these tiles come in matte and glossy. It is better to finish the floor with matte products, as they are easy to clean.
Linoleum
There is no special type of linoleum that can only be used for bathroom floors. Manufacturers do not strive to produce this material with increased moisture resistance and wear resistance characteristics. Due to the improvement, linoleum will cost more, and therefore the main advantage of linoleum – its low cost – will disappear. There are many varieties of linoleum, but for bathrooms it is better to take PVC or marmoleum material. PVC linoleum is the simplest material, but marmoleum is an innovative material created entirely from natural ingredients. Ordinary linoleum is slippery, and therefore for the bathroom you should choose special models, the top layer of which contains corundum chips. It is also better to choose models for the bathroom that contain antibacterial substances.
A natural stone
Natural stone is not often used for finishing bathrooms, because it is quite expensive. Its use is justified only if the rest of the apartment is also decorated pompously and flashily chic. There are many types of natural stones you can use for bathrooms, but unpolished porous marble is most often used. This material perfectly withstands thermal and mechanical loads, and also does not become slippery when water gets on it. It is strong and durable; in fact, such floors are installed for centuries. But natural stone should be chosen by a professional, since not every material of this type is suitable for use in the bathroom. If there are small inclusions of iron in the stone, over time they can lead to the formation of rust.
Self-leveling floor
Self-leveling flooring is one of the most stylish solutions for bathroom flooring. It is a monolithic structure with some image. It is thanks to this material that you can turn the floor in the bathroom into a 3D picture. Those. the image on the floor will look as realistic as possible even without special 3D glasses. This material is strong and durable. It is highly resistant to abrasion. The self-leveling floor is resistant to moisture. It can be washed with any chemicals, and at the same time it will not lose its original qualities. This material withstands temperature changes well and has high thermal conductivity. But the cost of installing self-leveling floors is quite high, and preparation for installation of this material can take about a month. In this case, you need to properly prepare the concrete slab - the base.
Wooden floor
It is difficult to make a floor from ordinary wood in a bathroom, but with the right approach and careful selection of a certain material, you can try. The best wood for bathrooms is teak, which was previously used to build ships. This material is wear-resistant and does not deteriorate under the influence of chemical reagents. This wood is rough to the touch, making the floor non-slip. You can also use thermowood for the floors in the toilet. This material is wood that has been carefully steamed at very high temperatures. This makes the wood moisture resistant. Fungus or mold does not form on such material. But it is better to treat any wooden floor with moisture-resistant substances and cover it with a special yacht varnish.
Moisture-resistant laminate
In most cases, moisture-resistant laminate is made from compressed wood sawdust. To glue these sawdust, special epoxy resins and sometimes paraffin are used. The thicker the material, the greater the load it can withstand. The maximum service life of the laminate also depends on this. This material is not designed for prolonged direct contact with liquid. If you accidentally spill water on it, it will not foam instantly, but it is better to wipe the floor dry to reduce the risk of deformation of the moisture-resistant laminate. Also, moisture-resistant laminate can be made entirely from plastic, which is why it is called completely waterproof. When installing such material, you should adhere to the technology and achieve complete sealing of the joints to prevent the possibility of liquid getting there.
Vinyl floor
Standard vinyl flooring may consist of multiple tiles or be sold in rolls. It is better to use the tiled installation method. If one of the tiles becomes damaged during use, it can be replaced later. It is durable and reliable, and also looks stylish. Vinyl flooring is made up of multiple layers of different components. Moreover, the decorative (most beautiful) layer is always at the top. This material is extremely durable and waterproof. It does not absorb water and does not deteriorate from hot water vapor. Vinyl flooring is quite warm and non-slip. This material is highly antistatic. Vinyl flooring is not environmentally friendly because it is made from synthetic substances. When burned, it can release dangerous and harmful substances.
Change the grout
This is a banal, but uncomplicated and inexpensive way to update your bathroom without renovation. If you have tiled walls, there is grout between the individual tiles. You can replace it with a new one by choosing a different color.
To do this, use a spatula to clean the seams from the old grout. Dilute the new one with water to a uniform consistency. If desired, you can add dye. Wear rubber gloves and simply rub it into the seams with your finger or a rag. You can work with a spatula, but it takes a long time and requires some skill.
Important
Use high-quality plastic grout. Cement with plasticizers, silicone or latex are suitable. Compositions that harden after drying and are unable to shrink or expand are one of the reasons for the appearance of cracks on tiles.

Wall finishing materials
Professionally finishing bathroom walls is a serious undertaking. First you need to choose quality material. Such material should be moisture resistant, environmentally friendly and hygienic. It should be easy to operate and install. Its color should be in harmony with the overall condition of the bathroom. However, the colors of the walls and floors may differ. This will make the room even more interesting. When decorating a bathroom, tiles are most often used. She is not afraid of dampness and looks quite stylish. But not all interiors will have appropriate tiles on the walls. That is why all kinds of materials began to be used to repair bathroom walls: drywall, decorative plaster, self-adhesive film, etc. This variety allows you to choose the best products for your bathroom.
Ceramic tiles
The range of such materials is quite wide. The client can buy tiles of different shapes, sizes and prices. There are many factories for the production of tiles and other tiles, but when decorating one room it is better to focus on one manufacturer. In this case, it will be possible to harmoniously decorate the walls in the bathroom, since they will be made in the same style. The tiles do not allow moisture to pass through, so the wall will be protected from excess moisture. Mold or mildew will not grow under the coating. Wall tiles made of tiles or ceramics are easy to use on a daily basis. They are easy to clean; you just need to wipe the surface with a sponge and water or detergent. However, this material does not have high mechanical strength, i.e. it is easy to break. In order for such tiles to look good on the wall, professionals should be involved in its installation.
Mosaic
Mosaic is a type of ceramic tile, to which elements from other materials are sometimes added. At the same time, there are many different forms of material. It is customary to divide mosaics into 2 types. The first includes those that are laid out on a special basis with separate pictures and elements. The second includes those elements that are laid out manually. The mosaic looks interesting and unusual. It's hard to break. It does not form mold or mildew. This material has a long service life. If you follow masonry technology, you can install any surface without visible joints. But it is better to purchase a mazika consisting of similar elements. A mixture of ceramics and metals will look stylish until the first rust appears, and glass, even in a mosaic picture, can be easily broken.
Natural and artificial stone
Natural stone is an expensive material that can only be used in particularly luxurious interiors that already have a stone floor. In other cases, it is better to line the walls with artificial stone. This material is very heavy, which is why its installation requires additional work. At the same time, stones should be used in the bathroom interior with the utmost caution. The material significantly reduces the visual appearance of the bathroom. Moreover, this applies to both artificial and natural stones. That is why this material is contraindicated for small bathrooms and separate toilets. It does not absorb moisture and in most cases has a porous structure. Thanks to this, the stones are able to “breathe”. They are environmentally friendly and absolutely harmless even for small children and allergy sufferers.
Natural wood finishing
Ordinary wood very easily absorbs water (including that which is in heated air), so it must be used very carefully to decorate bathrooms. Because of this, wood requires additional moisture-resistant impregnation, so it can remain in damp conditions for a long time. You can burn and process wooden panels yourself, but it is better to buy ready-made products and start covering the bathroom walls with them. Such panels are expensive, although they give the bathroom an extraordinary country house atmosphere. Also, similar wood panels can be used if there is a home bath in the bathroom. At the same time, decorating bathroom walls with natural wood (even lining) implies the presence of specific accessories (mirrors, hangers, partitions, plumbing equipment) that will emphasize the created style.
Flexible stone
Flexible stone became known to the general public relatively recently, but during this time it has managed to become extremely popular throughout the world. This is a thin facing material that is convenient for decorating the walls of various rooms. It consists of three layers. The first is a universal fabric base, the second is an adhesive, and the third is small chips of any stone (marble, granite, quartz, etc.). At the same time, the patterns in which small particles are laid out on the surface resemble the appearance of large natural stones. From a distance, the material can be confused with natural stone. Flexible stone is practical and durable, it can be used even in very damp and poorly ventilated bathrooms. The surface is rough to the touch, because the outer layer of the material is represented by stone chips.
Marble
Marble is a unique material that can be used for any design ideas. Today it is used in decorating bathrooms, since the porous structure of this rock makes it moisture resistant. Also, thanks to this, marble can be called a breathable material; mold or mildew does not form underneath it on the walls. Marble decoration of the bathroom looks luxurious, elegant and stylish. Moreover, this material is characterized by durability, impact resistance and relative ease of maintenance. It can be cleaned with ordinary detergents, although at the very beginning of use it is better to treat it with a special protective substance. Marble is also resistant to extremely high temperatures and does not crack under all kinds of temperature changes. However, marble is expensive, and therefore few can afford it.
PVC panels
Universal PVC panels are often used for bathroom renovations, but they require additional protection during installation. Mold or mildew can easily form under such panels in a damp and damp room, although polyvinyl chloride is a waterproof material. However, if installation errors are made, large gaps can be left between the wall and the panel, which will lead to unpleasant consequences. However, this material is cheap and every homeowner can afford it. Panels made of polyvinyl chloride can be painted in absolutely any color; they can fit into the most unusual bathroom interior. Some of these panels imitate natural stones, wood, tiles or are decorated with photo printing. This material is durable, has good sound insulation and retains heat well.
Moisture-resistant wallpaper
Wallpaper in the bathroom looks original, but you need to carefully select this material. Ordinary wallpaper is not suitable for the bathroom, since due to constant dampness and high humidity they will instantly become unusable. In bathrooms, special moisture-resistant wallpaper, glass wallpaper or photo wallpaper (the latter less commonly) are usually used. They make it possible to bring to life the most unusual design solutions, since they have a huge range, while the finish will be durable. Wallpaper is relatively inexpensive when compared with natural stone or ceramic tiles, so this material is often used to save money. Before starting the renovation, the walls in the bathroom will require minimal preparation. Moreover, you can prepare the walls yourself, and then start covering them with the chosen wallpaper.
Decorative plaster
For bathrooms, special moisture-resistant decorative plaster is used. With its help you can create a completely unique room design. The pattern for decorating a bathroom can be anything. Almost anyone can apply decorative plaster to a wall; even a non-professional can do it. But this material is not very cheap. Some types of decorative plaster are extremely expensive, so their use as part of regular cosmetic renovations in an apartment (including in the bathroom) is impractical. For finishing bathrooms, sanitizing plaster, moisture-resistant plaster or facade plaster are most often used (it contains specific synthetic substances that help cope with dampness and high humidity). These materials normalize the microclimate in the bathroom, absorbing excess moisture.
Painting walls with waterproof paints
There are many varieties of moisture-resistant paints that can be used to decorate bathrooms. Water-based paint is one such material. Moreover, it is better to take water-based emulsion with special additives that prevent it from blurring. But it is not advisable for her to paint those areas of the wall that are 100% guaranteed to get water. Oil paint is used very rarely today. It takes a long time to dry, and with extremely strong temperature changes it can begin to peel off. Alkyd paint can be called one of the most popular, but it smells strongly. Moreover, the unpleasant odor remains even several weeks after the repair work. That is why now most often the walls in the bathroom are covered with acrylic paints. They are non-toxic and durable. Acrylic paints are easy to apply to walls; even someone who has never done a renovation in their life can handle it.
Self-adhesive film
Finishing with film looks original and unusual. This material does not allow moisture to pass through, so the possibility of mold or mildew formation is minimized. Self-adhesive film is cheap, although it looks impressive. There is a huge range of colors for this product. Moreover, today there is film with relief on sale. It costs more, but looks very interesting. This material is very easy to apply to the wall, so when making repairs you don’t even need to hire professional builders. You can handle it on your own. At the same time, it is easy to change the film if the pattern on it is tired or no longer harmonizes with the plumbing equipment. This material is easy to care for. You can simply wipe it with a damp cloth. However, self-adhesive film has low strength. It is easy to tear.
Let there be light!
Experiment with lighting. Change the shade on the main lamp, choose something stylish and suitable for the interior of the bathroom. An additional lamp can be installed.
Install lamps above the mirror. If it fits tightly to the wall and you don't want to drill holes for fasteners, you can find inexpensive suction cup lights. If there is a gap between the mirror and the wall, you can find an option with a clip-on clip. There are inexpensive options that are powered from the mains and with a built-in battery.
There is a modern, economical solution - LED strip. It can be glued in any way - from above, from below, along the perimeter of the mirror, at a distance or end-to-end. This solution is not only stylish, but convenient. It will be more convenient for men to shave, and for women to use cosmetics.
In large online stores you can find original budget-class lamps.
You can buy a ready-made mirror with LED lighting, or make it yourself.
Ceiling decoration
You can make a ceiling in the bathroom by inviting a professional to do it, or by yourself. Moreover, the second method will be cheaper, but it will require significant time expenditure and the presence of certain skills. You will also have to choose the material for finishing the ceiling yourself. It must be strong, moisture-resistant, durable, beautiful and easy to care for. This material must also withstand temperature changes. It is better to select it based on already selected materials for the walls, but this is not always possible, because, for example, hanging wallpaper on the ceiling of a bathroom is not considered a good idea. You also need to remember the structural features of bathrooms and it is advisable to choose a material for the ceiling so that it can hold back a sudden flow of water if suddenly a pipe in the bathroom of the neighbors above them bursts and they begin to flood the apartment located below them. But not every ceiling can cope with such a test.
Stretch ceiling
In modern bathrooms, suspended ceilings are most often installed. They are characterized by increased moisture resistance and do not allow water to pass through, which can leak from above. This material is as environmentally friendly as possible. It can withstand severe temperature changes and high temperatures without evaporating harmful substances. Thanks to the variety of shapes, textures and colors, stretch ceilings can be integrated into any design project. They can be of absolutely any color, although it is better to choose models in light shades so that the bathroom does not seem overly gloomy and dark. Stretch ceilings are easy to use and do not require special care. They only need to be wiped with a damp cloth to prevent dust or dirt from accumulating on them. But stretch ceilings are unstable to various mechanical damages.
Panels
If the walls in the bathroom are decorated with PVC panels, then the ceiling can also be finished with them. Plastic panels are highly durable and moisture resistant. They look stylish and beautiful, without requiring additional processing. They are easy to install yourself, but you need to make sure that the structure looks monolithic. The gaps between the panels look unaesthetic. Also, spotlights or any other lighting fixtures can be built into the panel ceiling, if their presence corresponds to the design idea. Plastic panels are easy to care for and do not require the use of special chemicals to clean them. This material is cheap. But it is not suitable for bathrooms with poor ventilation, because... its metal frame can easily become rusty even if it has a galvanized coating.
Dye
The ceiling in the bathroom can be painted with acrylic, latex or silicone paint. These types of paints are moisture resistant, do not deteriorate under the influence of water and do not lead to excess moisture in the enclosing structures. A painted ceiling is easy to clean. This paint has a finely porous surface, due to which it is well ventilated and does not accumulate a lot of dirt. These ceilings are easy to clean with the simplest detergents and a sponge. Any paint of this type can be easily applied to any prepared surface: reinforced concrete, ordinary concrete, and wood. However, over time, a painted ceiling may fade and will need to be painted again. Also, the paint may begin to peel over time if condensation forms on the ceiling, which is typical in bathrooms.
Drywall
If the ceiling in the bathroom is uneven, it is best to use plasterboard to repair it. Using this material you can create stylish and original designs, for example, a multi-level ceiling with built-in ceiling lights. It is strong and durable enough if you properly care for it and promptly clean it from accumulated dirt. It is usually possible to place all communications in the bathroom under drywall, freeing up space as much as possible. But for drywall you will need to create an additional frame structure that will support the ceiling. Moreover, for modern bathrooms it is better to choose not wooden, but metal frames, pre-treated with anti-corrosion compounds. With prolonged use, drywall can fade, which is why you will have to paint it yourself.
Self-adhesive film
One of the most “frivolous” options. It is rare, but still occurs. Its advantages are:
- cheapness;
- aesthetics.
Variety of film types
Gluing the film should be preceded by careful leveling of the walls; it is even better to glue the film on top of MDF or plastic.
The disadvantages of the material are the inevitable mold that forms under it, a short service life and colors that fade over time.
Bathroom lighting
The number of lighting fixtures in the bathroom depends on the size of the room and the availability of natural light sources. If the toilet has a window (even a small one), significantly fewer lamps will be needed. In large bathrooms, it is better to provide zone lighting. This usually applies to combined bathrooms. In this case, a distinction is made between the area where the toilet is located and the area where the bathtub is located. The design of lamps and the degree of illumination are influenced by the style of the interior. Glossy and mirror surfaces reflect light better, so having them in the bathroom will require less lighting equipment. Lamps can be located on the ceiling, walls and even on the floor; their location is determined by design decisions. Moreover, lighting in the bathroom can be integrated into the Smart Home system to be able to control its intensity.
Choosing a color palette
The color palette should be thought out as much as possible so that the bathroom looks stylish and cozy, and not funny and tacky. Usually the bathroom has a small area, so it is better to decorate it in light shades, because... They are the ones who contribute to the visual enlargement of the room. Although dark shades can make a room feel cozier, a dark-colored design should be designed by a professional. It is better not to use more than 3 different colors or more than 5 shades of the same color. The bathroom is small, so the colors will be too noticeable. Moreover, it is better to select colors taking into account the palette that was used for renovation throughout the apartment. Monochromatic bathrooms look stylish, but choosing finishing materials and plumbing fixtures of the same shade is extremely difficult. To renovate a bathroom, you can use the following color combinations:
- orange, blue and white;
- purple, white and yellow;
- yellow, red and blue;
- green, orange and yellow.
Electricity
Wiring in the bathroom
The next stage after sewerage and water supply is the installation of electrical wiring. Selecting elements for wiring is an important step where savings can play a cruel joke in the future (fire or short circuit). Therefore, wires are chosen only with good insulation, and sockets and lamps are selected from moisture-proof materials.
You cannot install ordinary sockets, because there is a high risk of fire or short circuit. To choose the right equipment for repair, there are consultants in stores who will suggest the best option. The wiring is provided with short circuit protection so that in unforeseen circumstances the bathroom can be disconnected separately from the rest of the home.
Ergonomics: proper organization of space in the bathroom
The bathrooms are too small to speak of their successful ergonomics. Ideally, there should be at least 75 cm between the plumbing equipment, the door and the walls. The only exceptions are the toilet and bidet, for them this value can be equal to 35 cm. The distance between the bathtub (shower stall) and the sink can be reduced to 30 cm. Height washbasins and countertops of bathroom furniture can vary from 80 to 110 cm. Usually this value is 90 cm, however, today many people install special sinks for small children at a height that is comfortable for them. Moreover, there should be a distance of at least 10 cm between these washbasins. The layout of the bathroom should be convenient for all family members. This applies to both children and the elderly. Moreover, you need to try to save space. In small bathrooms (for example, in Khrushchev-era buildings), the washing machine is placed under the sink, and instead of a bathtub, a shower is installed.
Update tiles without replacement
Of course, you shouldn’t replace the tiles with new ones. If your walls, floor or ceiling are lined with plain tiles, you can experiment. It is not necessary to repaint the entire tile. It all depends on your imagination. But not all types of paints are suitable for these purposes. Holds up best:
- Acrylic paints;
- Epoxy-based enamels;
- Oil paints.
Before painting, the selected tiles must be washed and degreased. It is best to apply the paint with a brush to avoid getting it on the grout and adjacent tiles. Once the process is complete, do not use the bathtub, shower or sink until the painted tiles are completely dry.

Selection of plumbing fixtures and furniture
Plumbing equipment must be durable, reliable and multifunctional. It is better to buy products that were made from environmentally friendly materials. The color of the plumbing fixtures should be in harmony with the decoration of the room. Usually choose a bathtub, sink and toilet in classic white. They will not have to be changed if, even after a couple of years, the owner decides to change the color of the walls in the bathroom. All plumbing equipment should be selected at the same time. In this case, it will be possible to select the most suitable products for each other. Before purchasing devices, you should decide on the type of mounting and placement. Plumbing equipment comes in different sizes, and for small bathrooms you need to buy a sink and toilet in a slightly different format than for spacious bathrooms. General features of some types of plumbing fixtures are presented in the photo below.
Plumbing equipment | Peculiarities |
Shower cabin | Installed in small bathrooms. Modern shower cabins have a lot of additional functions: built-in radio, color lighting, massagers, etc. |
Baths | Classic plumbing equipment. Bathtubs come in steel, cast iron, acrylic and even stone. Their appearance is determined by the general style of the room. |
Toilets | It must be durable, reliable and as silent as possible (meaning the noise level when filling the tank with water). |
Sinks | Can be of different sizes and shapes. They are mandatory plumbing equipment. |
Stylistic directions
The style of the bathroom can be anything, but most homeowners adhere to certain ready-made solutions for bathroom design. Most often, the toilet is decorated in a classic style. This option looks beautiful and elegant. It is especially suitable for large bathrooms with a window. And the Art Nouveau style will be appropriate in small bathrooms. It allows you to install small functional shower cabins in the toilet. Art Nouveau is characterized by a natural palette of colors, floral motifs and the presence of all kinds of accessories with floral patterns. Among modern stylistic trends, it is worth highlighting bionics. This design style is characterized by the imitation of everything natural. Many people decorate their bathrooms in marine, ethnic, Scandinavian or Mediterranean styles. They look impressive and allow you to bring non-standard design ideas to life.
These styles can be combined.
How to install drywall?
Let’s focus on one of the options that is quite optimal in terms of cost and reliability – plasterboard sheets. To decorate the walls in the bathroom with this material, you first need to decide what exactly you will use for coating, that is, choose drywall (necessarily moisture-resistant). You also need to purchase galvanized metal profiles for the frame and materials for puttying (serpyanka, primer mixture and putty).
Having decided what to use during the renovation, you need to decide how to finish the walls in the bathroom with plasterboard: you can glue the sheets directly onto them or install a metal frame onto which the plasterboard is sewn. The first method allows you to maintain the dimensions of the room (with a frame, the material “takes up” about 5 centimeters of space on each side), but for this the surface must be perfectly flat. Installing profiles is considered a more reliable option and, in addition, allows you to hide communication systems: pipes, wires, etc.
To glue the sheets, the walls are first primed, and then gypsum glue is applied in heaps to the drywall. The sheet is carefully glued and its evenness is checked using a level. If you decide to install a frame, then the profiles are driven in with dowels, forming a lattice on which plasterboard sheets are sewn with self-tapping screws.
Painting a plasterboard wall in the bathroom
Having installed the gypsum board using any of the described methods, you need to decide how you can finish the walls on the surface: paint or surround the bathroom with tiles.
When painting, it is necessary to take into account that first the surface is primed and the seams are sealed (sealed with sickle tape and puttied in several layers). Then the starting and finishing putty is applied to the entire coating so that it is as even as possible. Only after this can you think about painting.
When choosing a paint, be sure to check that it is suitable for bathrooms: this is usually indicated by a symbol on the packaging.
