A bench in the hallway is a very convenient thing to sit down before going out and put on your shoes or use it to store things. The benches that can now be found in furniture stores do not always fit in size or the price is too high. We have collected for you 10 bench designs for the hallway , thanks to which you can create your own unique option.

Ikea benches

When deciding to purchase a bench for your hallway, preference should be given to well-established stores that have long-term experience in this area. Not all specialized retail outlets can provide a large assortment. Furniture sales by IKEA are aimed at the mass consumer. The catalogs contain all kinds of options for benches for the hallway, among which it is not difficult to choose the appropriate option.

Home bench

An example of making a wooden bench for a home with a stained glass wooden top. Would look great at the dining table, at the foot of your bed, in the hallway, or anywhere else that needs a little extra space.

This model can often be found in furniture stores, although more often with metal legs. But this version, with wooden legs, has its advantages; the manufacturing process is simpler and cheaper. The legs for this bench have been modified slightly to create a sturdy rectangle with a modern frame design. Assembling the frame and legs is not difficult; everything is shown schematically in step-by-step photos. More interesting is the process of making the top of the bench.

The top is made of planks that are attached to a sheet of plywood, and the plywood is the most expensive part of this project. You can replace the plywood with a less expensive option. The width of the planks does not matter much (planks 75 mm wide were used here). When making the planks, the bulk will be 24cm long with 45 degree cuts at each end. Start installation with strips that form a point at one end of the center of the plywood, attaching them with glue and nails. Continue cutting slats to fill the main part of the tabletop, using glue and nails.

Trim the end pieces to fit and fill the top. Cutting Tip: Measure the lengths of adjacent pieces to get the length of the new piece to be cut. For example, on the top pieces the long side is 24cm, the short side will be the same as the long side on the small corner piece. Attach these pieces with glue and trim the entire top piece as needed.

Materials

When choosing material for a bench, you need to consider:

  • residents' taste;
  • tasks performed;
  • price;
  • design solution.

Today you can find various designs.

Made of plastic

Such products are rarely used in apartments because they are not very durable. As a rule, they are purchased for a summer kitchen or attic and shoes for the house are stored in them. Plastic benches can be made in any color, and have a back and even a hanger.

Made of wood

Wooden benches are much more expensive than plastic models. But they will suit any style. They are often supplemented with comfortable seats and sofa cushions.

Solid wood products trimmed with genuine leather are considered an indicator of wealth. Wood is most often covered with stain and varnish, or treated with wax or a special impregnation that emphasizes the beauty of the texture.

On a metal frame

Such models fit perfectly into hallways with high-tech and modern design styles. Their advantages are ergonomics, practicality, and compactness.

From chipboard and MDF

Cheap designs with upholstery made of inexpensive textiles. They are usually equipped with a folding seat and several drawers.

Forged metal

Forged benches in the hallway are valued for their exclusivity, reliability and high quality. They can only be used in conjunction with decorative pillows. Such products can boast of having a built-in hanger and shoe rack.

From the vine

The advantages of wicker models are elegance and attractiveness. The downside is low practicality.

Combined

The difference between these designs is the use of several materials at once. For example, the frame of a bench can be wooden, the back can be metal, and the drawers can be made of rattan.

pros

Having a bench in the hallway with a shoe rack has a lot of advantages:

  • no need to purchase a shoe rack;
  • ease of putting on shoes;
  • the opportunity to sit and think before leaving the apartment whether you took everything with you;
  • the ability to put a bag or net with products.

Thanks to its ability to increase the level of comfort, a vestibule seat will make life much easier for you and your household.

Metal based

A 40x40x2.5 corrugated pipe with welded ends, thrown directly onto the ground in the Moscow region, rusts right through from below after more than 15 years. And after that, the remaining box can hold the bench no less. There is no need to talk about strength: even Hollywood superheroes cannot cut steel with their hands. True, in the USSR they once made a rather stupid movie in which the late Lev Durov pierced a metal tank with his finger. Tin, for drinking water.

So, everything is OK with the strength and durability of metal benches. Garden benches made from profile pipes can be quite attractive, see fig.

But please note: a pleasant appearance is achieved by using parts bent along a radius. To achieve the same aesthetic effect with straight pipes, you will need at least twice as much work and material, as in the bottom right in Fig.

Garden benches from profile pipes

To smoothly bend the workpieces, you need a fairly expensive and complex pipe bender for profile pipes. An alternative option is hot bending of a pipe filled with sand. But, firstly, at current prices, you need a forge with a forge: in order to bend the sides of the bench with a propane torch in the tutorials, bottom left in the figure, you need to almost completely burn a 20-liter gas cylinder. Secondly, hot bending is a delicate matter. If you manage to ruin no more than 3 blanks before the part comes out without wrinkles and with the ends in the same plane, you are a born blacksmith.

The next circumstance is that the strength of a bench made of metal profiles is significantly excessive. Therefore, if you make one, the main thing is your own taste and invention. And we give a couple of drawings of benches made of corrugated pipe 40x40x2.5 for purely utilitarian purposes. On the left in Fig. - a large hardware store, and on the right is Scott's shop. Why it is and what to do with it is well known to fans of bodybuilding and fitness.

Is it just a pipe?

The corrugated pipes are drawn from ordinary structural steel, and nowhere does anyone say that any other metal will not work on the bench. For such cases in Fig. several examples of metal benches. Pos. 1 – a shop for secluded and little-visited places. There is no point in stealing it: the “gain” is tiny compared to the fuss of robbery and dismantling, and reclaimed wood is not yet accepted anywhere. Material – steel strip 4-6 mm thick. Its legs won’t be able to withstand wild fun, so this bench is mainly for the cemetery.

Pos. 2 – bench/lounger-wicker for sun and air baths. There is no pressure anywhere, the body breathes from all sides. The base is made from an old Soviet folding bed, so even a child can rearrange it much more conveniently. The supporting frame, instead of the now expensive aluminum, can be assembled from propylene water pipes.

A functionally and aesthetically complete garden bench, pos. 3 is collected on the basis of worn-out parts of agricultural machinery and vehicles. The latter, however, is not necessary: instead of leaf springs, the same steel strip or corner will be used.

About transforming benches

Country transforming bench

Transformable furniture saves a lot of usable space. In a city apartment this advantage can be decisive. Unfortunately, it is the only one: transformable furniture is more complex, more expensive, serves less functionally than conventional furniture and requires additional user operations when converting to another use case.

“Transfurniture” probably came to the garden/dacha only under the influence of fashion. A transforming garden bench is most often either a paired bench or a lounger that can be folded out from a table with benches, see fig. However, it is still more pleasant to bask in the sun on something soft, like the wicker described above. And if the transformer is a double bench, then it’s a garden bench, not a park bench. It is not customary to sit with your back to each other between relatives, friends and acquaintances.

There is one more circumstance: there is many times more dust and climatic influences outside than at home. therefore, if, say, a transforming apartment table, with careful use, will last 7-10 years, then a garden table will last 3-5 years, especially with wooden hinges.

In general, transformable garden furniture is not for everyone. If you want to practice mechanics and kinematics, it’s your choice. But in reality it will be easier and more useful to think through the layout of the site so that everything you need fits there separately.

Let's consider the simplest option, do-it-yourself benches made from boards

For this you will need:

  1. First of all, a standard set of tools:
  • roulette;
  • saw, screwdriver;
  • Bulgarian;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • sandpaper;
  • sandpaper for cleaning.

  1. And secondly, this material:
  • timber for frame 4*3cm;
  • rail 4*2cm;
  • horizontal side slats 2 pcs, length 87 cm;
  • horizontal transverse slats, length 19.5 cm;
  • timber for legs 4 pcs, 42 cm each;
  • stain, PVA glue;
  • 14 tightening screws;
  • drying oil or varnish.

  1. To strengthen the structure additionally:
  • one horizontal rail 870mm long;
  • two transverse 195mm;
  • as well as 2 boards for shelves.
  1. For a soft seat you will need:
  • plywood with a thickness of at least 1cm, size 950*250mm;
  • leatherette;
  • foam rubber (8 identical parts, size 2000*100mm).

Weaving

Now you need to weave a pattern from the tubes with filler. It resembles braiding hair for girls. You can repeat the weaving technique by looking at the result of the work. I took each tube and pulled the next one under the previous one. If the first one was located below, then the second one had to be woven on top of it.

It is important to make sure that the tension is really tight. Once the work is completed, all that remains is to fasten the tubes with staples from the bottom. There may be some fabric left over that needs to be cut off after you staple the edges.

Benefits of use

Designers have transformed a simple bench for changing shoes into a wonderful decorative element. The range offered by the modern market is unusually huge and varied.

A bench for shoes in the hallway has the main advantage of versatility, since additional equipment with shelves and drawers will make the bench more functional.

Selection rules

Are you planning to buy a bench for the hallway? Since they come in a variety of options, you need to make sure that the choice you make is the right one.

First of all, you should pay attention to the dimensions - the bench should not interfere with movement or overwhelm with its bulkiness. In a vestibule with limited space, it is enough to install a small structure with great functionality.

It is also necessary to take into account the number of residents and the style of decoration of the premises. In addition, the selected model must meet the individual preferences of the apartment owners.

Design solutions

When buying ready-made furniture and if you want to make a bench for the hallway with your own hands, it will be useful to study information about possible styles. The most popular models:

  1. In retro style. They are decorated with bent parts, voluminous decorations, carved patterns and paintings. The back, armrests and legs have a non-standard configuration.
  2. Classic. They are distinguished by correct geometry, muted colors and restrained design.
  3. In the direction of Provence. Characteristic features are lightness, airiness, floral patterns, pastel shades.
  4. High tech. They stand out for their laconic design, lack of decoration and monochrome palette.
