Which direction is bathroom fashion heading? We analyzed the stands of leading sanitary ware and bathroom equipment factories at the latest Salone del Mobile and ISH exhibitions, and studied what Russian and Western designers choose for their projects. In this post we tell you which modern bathroom design ideas 2020 (photos attached) are worth betting on.
Bathtubs: how to choose the most modern model?
Aesthetic free-standing models with overflow filling, a sound system and other bells and whistles are still a marker of true chic.

If the space does not allow you to install a free-standing bathtub - for example, when a bathroom is being designed in a small apartment (photo) - the design of a bathroom 2022 with an attached model will be more organic and functional. A striking example is the Marsiglia, Agape bathtub with a wide front wall or the laconic Happy D.2, Duravit bathtub with rounded external corners.

Like trendy sanitary ware, bathtubs strive for subtlety, so the usual acrylic, cast iron and steel are being replaced by quarry, crystalplant, and corian. Bathtubs made from these composite materials are smooth, pleasant to the body, but non-slip; the water in such products does not cool down for a long time, and dirt does not stick to the surfaces.

A separate “trend beyond trends” are bathtubs with meaning, their own philosophy, inspired by the era, iconic objects, and fashion trends. For example, designer Patricia Urquiola designed the Cuna bathtub for Agape so that the model would be similar to a cradle, and the Vieques bathtub for the same brand refers to industrial New York with its appearance reminiscent of a metal barrel.

Fashionable finishing
In 2022, naturalness is in fashion in everything, including in the choice of finishing materials for the bathroom.
Designers recommend choosing textured wooden surfaces, as well as concrete or marble. Using combinations of these materials, you can easily create an elegant interior with stucco elements on the ceiling.
It is not relevant to use tiles with a continuous mosaic pattern in the design of a bathroom. The maximum you can afford is a small panel on one of the walls or cladding of individual elements (rim near the sink or bathtub). Otherwise, it is better to stick to monotony when choosing tiles.
What has lost relevance: 5 anti-trends
Tiling from bottom to top
Instead: lay it only in wet areas or up to the middle, alternating with paint, wallpaper, plaster.
Patchwork tiles
Instead: Use tiles with complex geometries.

Instead: use natural wood, combining it with natural stone in large slabs.

Furniture and plumbing
Wall cabinets and shelves remain in fashion, helping to make the most of a small bathroom space by hiding all the small details. Designers do not recommend using open shelves.
The only exceptions are those cases when there is practically nothing on them except scented candles or stands with toothbrushes. Such shelves should not look visually overloaded.
In plumbing, designers also give preference to laconicism and minimalism. Wall-hung toilets have become a separate trend: large amounts of dirt and dust do not collect under them, and cleaning takes much less time.
Faucets that are placed on the side of the sink also look interesting. This will look especially good if the bathroom cabinet or countertop is too narrow.
The ideas described will help you decide how to arrange the interior of the bathroom and take into account all the current trends of 2022.
Herringbone or chevron
This trend affected not only the appearance of ceramic tiles, but also the method of laying them. Herringbone or chevron harmonizes with almost any style, from elegant classics to looser, eclectic options. The designers rethought the role of the classic parquet pattern, raising it above the floor and choosing a new material for it - porcelain stoneware.
Tropical print
The tropics are taking over more and more spaces in our homes, and they have also reached the bathrooms. At the same time, tropical print is undergoing a transformation today. Instead of the usual monstera leaves, which have already become quite an eyesore, full-fledged landscapes with exotic plants, birds of paradise and animals have ascended to the Olympus of interior fashion. To recreate such narrative paintings, you need large-format tiles.

↑ Bold color
Play of light, transformation of the geometry of space, monochrome palette in minimalism with bright accents in decoration. Such interior ideas are popular today and can be used without taking into account the main style in the apartment - from classic to high-tech.
The wall and mirror frames in yellow, as well as the door with a wooden texture, enliven the calm shades in the room.
↑ “Old time” in a new way
Modern designs often offer aged finishes, such as rust or crackle effects.
↑ Different collections in one area
Designers advise combining different collections of ceramics. For example, decorative tiles on one wall with a neutral mosaic tone.
↑ Minimum details
In the new season, the creators pay special attention to texture, and the drawings become stylized. Decorative materials that imitate natural surfaces are popular - concrete, wood, granite.
↑ Art in the interior
The bathroom is the epicenter of art. Decorate the walls with paintings of your choice. Depending on your preferences, you can limit yourself to one or two works or create a creative composition from several paintings. At the same time, try not to overload the space visually.
Imitation metal
Imitation of various textures and surfaces is already a whole direction in the design of porcelain stoneware. One of the rarest textures to imitate, but no less trendy, is metal-look tiles. It can be smooth or textured with a three-dimensional pattern. Such tiles have all the same properties as regular ones, but look like real iron, titanium, brass, gold or any other metal.
Colored retro furniture
This modern trend will suit lovers of vintage and American classics from the 20s, 30s and 60s. In the spacious bathroom you can place a colorful retro armchair or even a small sofa. A small room can easily accommodate a stool or pouf.
It is not necessary to purchase expensive collectible furniture; you can artificially age it with your own hands or stylize it for a certain time period.

Pastel colors
The color scheme of tiles is increasingly shifting towards natural shades - either rich dark ones or frivolous pastels, for example, pink, mint, honey. Choose tiles in these shades and you will get a modern and stylish space.
