Bedside lamps for the bedroom: for the headboard, on the bedside table, suspended ceiling, wall

The bedroom is the place where we spend 1/3 of our lives. It is here that we build the closest relationships with our partner and replenish our strength after everyday worries. One of the criteria that influences the quality of rest and the level of comfort in the bedroom is lighting. Light in this case should promote quick relaxation before bed and a healthy awakening.

Manufacturers offer a wide selection of models. The buyer’s task is to choose lamps that will not only look good in the overall interior, but will also be comfortable in daily use. What criteria have a decisive influence on the choice of lighting devices:

  • model cost;
  • design features;
  • what types of lamps can be used;
  • total power of the lamp;
  • size;
  • style of execution of the model;
  • color scheme;
  • what materials are used;
  • are there any additional options?

A well-chosen lamp will satisfy each of the criteria. Our goal is to clarify terminology to simplify the process of choosing from a range of models.

How to choose a bedside lamp

Stores selling lighting equipment offer such a huge selection of bedroom lamps that it is difficult to choose the right one precisely because of such abundance. Buyers literally get dizzy and dizzy when surrounded by hundreds of glowing devices.

Therefore, you need to go shopping, clearly knowing your requirements for these products. The main parameters that you need to decide on are the type of installation of the lamp, its size, compliance with the style and color chosen for the interior design. It doesn’t hurt to think about the power and type of lamps, and the material of the lampshade.

Light bulb as a light source

Among the several types of lamps available today, preference should be given to LED ones.

LED lamps are economical and durable

LED bulbs

Although they are more expensive than others, they have several tangible advantages.

  1. Economical. LEDs last for decades without requiring replacement and consuming a negligible amount of electricity.
  2. Safety. Such lamps are usually produced in a plastic case, so they do not break when dropped.
  3. Low heat. The light bulbs hardly heat up during operation. This is a big plus for bedside lamps, which are very close to a person - even if you accidentally touch them, it is impossible to get burned on them. In addition, insignificant thermal radiation allows you to use any lampshades, even paper and textile ones - they will not light up or melt if they are close to the light bulb.

Note. The last two points are especially important for children's lamps. As a rule, they are equipped with plastic shades. This synthetic material can release toxic substances when heated.

Retro Edison lamps

An alternative to conventional light bulbs can be LED strip. Or rather, a lamp equipped with it.

Another nuance when choosing a lamp is the color of the glow. It is desirable that it be natural or warm, but not cold. Cold light is too bright and uncomfortable for the bedroom.

For the same reason, “daylight” fluorescent lamps are not suitable for the bedroom.

Tips for choosing

The first step is to decide on the location of the lamp. Lighting has been proven to change the feel of a room, so it's best to experiment and see how the lighting looks best. There is a lot to take into account - height, location relative to the bed and other main pieces of furniture. You can rely on the height of the bedside table - low lamps are suitable for high tables. This principle also works in the opposite direction. Most often, the style of a lamp is determined by the lampshade, but the type of body also plays a big role. Neutral shades are always at the peak of popularity, but they can be diluted with bright colors and unusual patterns.

It's worth taking a closer look at the lampshade. Not only its stylistic component plays a role. The ergonomic characteristics and proportions of the lamp, if selected incorrectly, can spoil the overall picture of the interior. There is a golden rule: the height of the lampshade should be 5 centimeters greater than its diameter. There are other options, but this design is considered the standard. The larger the diameter of the lampshade of a table lamp, the larger the area it will illuminate, which is practical for work areas, as well as for those whose lamp is located away from the bed.

Manufacturers have equipped their lamps with the ability to change the lampshade as needed. Some designers supply two or three lampshades with their lamps, made in the same style and matching the color scheme of the body. Table lamps are given added significance - they should complement the existing decor, giving the room a feeling of coziness and completeness. Lamps are placed not only near the bed. Table lighting is useful in the work area, near the dressing table with a mirror - this is a great idea to add light to the room without extra investment.

Design

Conventionally, all bedroom lamps can be divided into stationary and movable. The first illuminate only a certain area. The latter, thanks to a flexible leg, the presence of rotating mechanisms, hinges or other design features, can be directed where needed.

If the bedside lamp is used only as a night light, the first type is suitable.

Movable models are more functional. If necessary, the lampshade can be turned up or to the side so that the light is not directed into the eyes, but diffuses.

Purpose of a table lamp

A table lamp is an additional source of light in the room, a beautiful accessory, a symbol of home comfort and warmth. The light from this device is bright, with a directional luminous flux, so reading, writing, and doing other things under the lamp is pleasant and not tiring. The lamp shade dims the light, making it safer and easier on the human eye.

A properly selected lamp for the bedroom will make up for the lack of light, help you relax before bed while reading, and eliminate the fear of the dark at night. Beautiful bedroom table lamps will decorate any size room.

The lamp in the bedroom is usually placed on the bedside table. The dimensions of the lighting fixture can be different and are selected individually, based on the needs of the person and the design solution of the room.

More often, large devices with a dense lampshade and a weighty base are chosen for a bedside table. The material of the lampshade removes excess light, making the environment in the room as comfortable as possible for sleeping. The heavy base does not allow the lamp to tip over if it is touched by your hand.

The height of the bedside lamp plays an important role for those who like to read in bed. The bedside table on which it stands should be the height of the mattress, the lower edge of the lampshade should be at the level of the chin of a person reading a book in bed.

DIY bedroom lamp

If, with all the variety of assortment, the required lamp is not found in the store, you can make it yourself. Many manufacturing options have already been invented, and home craftsmen are still coming up with new ones.

You can simply decorate the ceiling of an existing old lamp to your taste, or you can create it completely yourself. For example and inspiration, here is a detailed master class on creating a lamp from the simplest materials.

An interestingly shaped glass wine bottle or plastic fizzy drink bottle will make an excellent base for a lamp. And the frame of the lampshade is made of thick wire. But in our case, the material for it was wire supports for plants, which can be bought at any gardening store.

Step by step photosDescription

Step 1

We take a bottle of a suitable shape with a screw cap and paint it in the chosen color with spray paint. Why spray it inside the vessel and shake it well.

Step 2

Make a hole in the bottle cap with a sharp knife.

Step 3

We disassemble the lamp socket and screw its base to the cover using a bolt and nut.

Step 4

We screw the cap onto the bottle and seal the head of the bolt with electrical tape to prevent the electrical wire from coming into contact with it.

Step 5

We strip the ends of the wire to connect to the socket and plug. You can take a ready-made wire from an old lamp.
Step 6We insert the wires into the clamps of the cartridge and assemble it, screwing it to the base fixed to the bottle.

Step 7

We screw the light bulb into the socket and check the operation of the device.

Step 8

To make the frame for the lampshade, we disassemble two wire garden supports, disconnecting the rods from the rings. They come in different diameters, so the lampshade can be made cylindrical or conical - from rings of different sizes.

Step 9

We make a holder for a light bulb from three rods, bending them with pliers and giving them the desired shape.

Step 10

The ends of the rods are secured to the ring with tape. The distance between them should be the same.

Step 11

We try the resulting design on the cartridge and bend the wire around it.

Step 12

We also fasten the resulting inner ring with tape. We wrap all connections over the tape with thread and fill them with hot glue.

Step 13

We paint the resulting part and the second wire ring with spray paint.

Step 14

Cut a rectangle from a sheet of thin plastic or thick thin cardboard. Its length should be slightly greater than the circumference of the ring, and its height should be equal to the height of the future lampshade.

Step 15

Glue the rectangle into a ring with hot glue, double-sided tape, or sew it on a machine.

Step 16

We glue double-sided tape onto the rings of the frame and glue it inside the resulting lampshade.

Step 17

We cover the lampshade with fabric, for which we use aerosol glue. We bend the upper and lower edges of the fabric inward, glue it and tuck it over the edge of the frame.

Step 18

We put the lampshade on the socket and use the lamp.

Types of fastening and inclusion

The myth that a table lamp is an invariably static device that has a round base and a trapezoidal lampshade has long been dispelled. Over the past decades, many design innovations have come into the world that amaze the imagination with their new shapes, color palette, types of lighting and additional functions.

On the open market you can find lamps that are attached to the tabletop using a clothespin or clamp. Such electrical appliances differ from the usual classics in ease of use and mobility.

Lighting devices with a flexible body will help you choose the ideal lighting angle in any situation. The legs of the lamp can be of different lengths, which contradicts the standard: the diameter of the cap should be 5 cm less than the height of the base.

The type of lamp switch plays an important role. The button on the device body is not always convenient, so the developers offered models with switches on the cord or on the remote control. Recently, touch-sensitive lighting devices that are turned on by the touch of a hand have become popular.

Among the useful functions that the new lamp can be equipped with, a special place is occupied by adjusting the brightness of the light, which is not available in the classic model bedroom table lamp.
