Features and principles of color solutions in a dark living room interior

The design of any room that uses dark shades of the color palette is not fixated on using only dark surfaces. In each case, the design option is individual and adheres to a number of basic rules for the distribution of shades.

The basic principles state that:

  • A dark palette is quite suitable for a spacious room, but the need to organize good lighting in the corners of such a room is definitely present.

  • A living room with windows facing south is more suitable for this design, since due to the large amount of natural light it will not look gloomy.

  • The color palette for a room with windows facing other directions should consist of lighter tones of furniture and wallpaper.

Contrasting combinations, harmoniously included in a dark palette, can successfully draw attention to interior details. An example is the design technique of placing a light furniture set against a dark wall.

Dullness and boredom can settle in the interior, for the decoration of which only dark colors are used. Therefore, you need to adhere to strict proportions.

Experienced designers offer a selection of shades using a 2:2:1 scheme - dark, gray, light. In practice, it may look like this: dark flooring, medium wall color and light furniture.

The interior in this design is always stylish and expressive. In the developments of apartment design professionals, there are many interesting options for color combinations, the basis of which are shades:

  • asphalt:
  • chocolate;
  • cherries;
  • sapphire;
  • Bordeaux;
  • emerald.

By choosing a base, according to the above scheme, you can easily obtain the required color combination in style.

Lighting and backlighting

In a dark room, one large chandelier in the center is not enough; the lighting must be complete! This means that cute lamps, sconces, and multi-level lighting will come in handy. It is not at all necessary to lower the ceilings and make them suspended - you can make special sides around the perimeter of the room and hide small lamps in them. Illumination of paintings, niches, cabinets is also an additional source of light; no need to neglect it. If your room has a podium or a slight difference in height, the lighting will look even more interesting.

Options for decorating the living room in dark colors

  1. Black floor in the room

This phrase evokes an association in a person with wall decoration, but this is far from the case.

Designers are bringing to life living room designs in which the floor takes on a dark accent.

It gives majesty and solidity to the interior. Against this background, furniture made of natural wood with velor or leather upholstery looks great.

The materials can be:

  • laminate in cherry or wenge shades;
  • parquet made of dark oak wood;
  • tiles stylized as granite.

Any of the listed materials is comfortable and looks presentable. But the choice always remains with the customer.

Floors with imitation natural stone have a solid and luxurious look. The classic look is emphasized by the matte surface of the flooring. Modern styles prefer gloss. Scandinavian style and other country styles prefer natural wood on the floor. The decoration of walls and ceilings with dark floors should be light, or at least medium tones, to avoid a feeling of gloom.

Natural wood on the floor is a win-win option for country style in the living room

  1. The walls are in dark colors.

The most common material is wallpaper. With their help, you can create an atmosphere of attractiveness and mystery. Most often, this design option is used when creating interiors in classical, English and Victorian styles. Interesting texture, silver-plated and gilded patterns, rich and deep colors – a successful find by the designers.

For modern styles, embossed, glossy and plain wall coverings are most suitable. However, it is not practical to decorate all the walls of the room in this style.

The color of other interior items is affected by the lighting and dimensions of the room.

  1. Dark ceiling in the living room.

This finishing method is very rare, but this design technique should not be discarded. It creates a glamorous and romantic atmosphere in the room.

This technique requires changing the order of shades in the scheme to the complete opposite: light walls and floor under a dark ceiling. Otherwise, this option should be abandoned.

An extraordinary design of the ceiling can become the main decorative element. To decorate the ceiling and bring it into line with the general stylistic direction of the floor and walls, you can use moldings and stucco, photo printing and painting in gold and silver tones, and LEDs.

The right materials

To decorate a dark room, you need to choose the right materials. Avoid stucco, excessive pretentiousness and relief - such surfaces absorb light and create a niche effect. If you choose wallpaper, let one wall be an accent wall, with a complex pattern, and the rest simply smooth. This will not particularly affect the illumination, but the size of the room will visually increase. It is better to make the ceiling plain and smooth, but choose an original floor covering; fortunately, manufacturers provide a wide range of textures and colors.

Redevelopment plan

Two-room apartment

The total area of the apartment is 56 sq. m. m. According to the redevelopment: the entrance to the bedroom (3) was moved from the corridor to the living room (1) - this made the corridor smaller, but allowed us to organize a full-fledged dressing room (4) and a small storage room (7) in the hallway. In addition, we decided to move the washer and dryer into the hallway (6) so as not to take up space in the bathroom or kitchen. In the bedroom, the plan shows another bed near the dressing room - this is a backlog for a crib with a chest of drawers next to it. The customers are planning to become parents, so they wanted to provide a place in the house for the baby.

New White No.59, Farrow & Ball

This creamy tone looks much fresher than more traditional white shades such as Lime White No. 1. Containing yellow pigment, it can warm any room and fill it with soft light. Try pairing it with White Tie #2002 or India Yellow #66.

Harmonious color combinations

If the furniture modules in the living room are made of natural wood, and the interior is dominated by dark brown and black colors, the addition of warm beige and sand shades is appropriate. An interesting solution is a few bright contrasting additions. For example, to match the dark purple color of the upholstery of sofas and armchairs, there is a crimson and blue decorative insert. The decor can be not only bright, but also white. An interesting solution, for example, would be to dilute the modules of a dark set with white poufs or an armchair with rounded kennels.

Contrasting combinations are in great demand. At the peak of sales today are sets that combine light and dark colors in one module: cabinet doors, shelves, upholstery elements. The combination of wenge and alder has become classic, harmoniously fitting into the modern design of the living room, and giving the space lightness and charm. But to create a harmonious composition you need to choose the right texture. It may not be noticeable, or it must be the same in each headset module.

The accent in the interior of a living room with dark-colored furniture can be bright or stark white decor, provided that such an accent is the only one in the entire room. Sometimes it is enough to cover the sofa with a white cover, and the living room will sparkle with new colors.

A dark-colored set can be diluted with one light module, for example, a white chair in a modern, geometrically correct style. With massive black sofas, it will become a bright point that sets balance.

Window decoration

Make the windows as light and smooth as possible, without relief textures. It is also advisable to remove plants from the windowsill; it is better to place a couple of pots in front of the window - the space will not be so cluttered, and more light will penetrate. Heavy curtains and dark tulle are “contraindicated” for a dark room, so give preference to light curtains and flowy light fabrics - they will give the room a special airiness.

Glass partitions

When decorating narrow, long rooms, you cannot do without zoning the space. In order not to completely cut off part of the room from sunlight, use transparent glass or plastic partitions. For greater privacy, a blackout curtain can be added to the enclosing structure.

The same technique is used when selecting interior doors. Options with tinted or embossed glass are preferred over dense wood doors.

Ideal for dark rooms: 5 shades from the Farrow & Ball palette

This sophisticated deep purple shade works especially great in a glossy finish, looking elegant, warm and dramatic, plus it enhances the light and fills the room with a shimmering glow.
