No, there will not be a detailed excursion into the interior direction. But it’s worth remembering the details inherent in modern style.

There is no separate modern style in the interior. This concept unites almost all trends in design that appeared not so long ago. And often it is eclecticism, that is, a harmonious mixture of two or three styles.

For example, country and Provence, art deco and minimalism, hi-tech and techno. And, of course, curtains should suit both styles.

All modern trends have details that unite them:

Simple colors: sand, gray, beige, white, black shades, milk chocolate or ivory. And if you want to add color, you can do this using green, blue, orange, purple or red.
Simple forms. In modern interiors you will not find carved legs, inlays, or excessive decor.
Free space. All furnishings play their role, and often several. An ordinary table turns into a dining table, a small sofa into a full-fledged sleeping place, etc.
Convenience. Things in the house are only necessary. And the owners regularly use them. That is, there are no hot-spots in the living room or any other room.

Vintage

Curtains made of smooth fabric are suitable for minimalism, art deco, vintage, and Mediterranean styles.

Use a trick. The fabric from which the curtains are made should be repeated in other textile elements of the room, be it the upholstery of a sofa, the upholstery of a frameless chair, a hammock or pillowcases for decorative pillows.

Sea style

Let us combine under one definition two stylistic directions of premises: Scandinavian and Mediterranean.

There is no need to abandon the classic in the usual sense. Moderate colors, simple lines, high-quality objects will make the room simple but cozy. The quality of finishing and furnishings is important here. There is no need to rely on pretentiousness.

Nautical styles

The abundance of natural light appeals to the marine-themed design. Delicate colors create a surprisingly pleasant picture.

Mediterranean style or Provence are ideal for a cozy kitchen-living room with two windows. It’s nice to get together with the whole family here, “swaying” on the waves of happiness.

You don't have to use color schemes typical of a nice day at the seaside. Stormy shades in a bright room look no worse. The main thing is not to overdo it. Light or bright accents that dilute the “storm” are required.

Ethnic image

Classic in English or American assumes a large area and the presence of several windows. The format is ideal for creating a piece of the Western world.

For the design of a kitchen-living room with two windows, a typical American design style suggests itself. It is better to make a separate living room in the English spirit.

There is no need to give up decorating in an ethno style. An Eastern, Moroccan, African or Japanese design scheme will require careful attention to detail. A complete picture of a certain topic looks bright and colorful.

How to apply?

In addition to selecting the type of curtains and their material, you should also take into account the type of window being decorated. A bay window is installed in the outer portions of the walls, although such projections can be equipped with balcony doors. Such a step will significantly increase the useful area in the home and increase the illumination of the guest area.

The main tasks when designing and decorating these windows are protection from excessive sun penetration (on the southern sides of houses), retaining heat during the winter season and maintaining optimal lighting.

You'll have to use a lot of material or come up with original moves. The already mentioned Japanese and Roman curtains will be the best way out. If you wish and have good stylistic compatibility, you can use French and English varieties equipped with tiebacks and lambrequins.

According to designers, bay windows are well compatible with thread curtains of iridescent color. The cornice should be selected that coincides with the line of the wall along the entire ceiling and is secured securely, because you will need to hold two or even three layers of thick curtains.

If a single curtain is used, make sure that it moves easily and freely in two directions along the baguette line. This means that it is undesirable to use a hook or clothespin as a hanger; they will constantly cling to each other. Check whether the grip of the end tips is reliable and whether they can hold the structure suspended.

Attention: ceiling cornices, despite all their external beauty, have a significant weakness - they can only be hung properly by trained specialists with the availability of tools.

If curtains are hung with eyelets, it is preferable to use round baguettes.

But multilayer structures with lambrequins are best combined with closed baguettes. String cornices cannot be bent, and therefore they are unacceptable in bay windows. It is easiest to set the required level of curvature with a metal pipe.

A large window (panoramic type) is designed in such a way that the curtains match not only the style of the living room, but also the view outside the window. So, industrial landscapes go well with minimalism and a loft inside, and if you can see a residential building or a children's playground, then you need to choose the classics.

It is strictly unacceptable to use curtains with small patterns, since they will be visually lost in a large room.

Short strips of material and all solutions in which the pattern is directed diagonally are also incompatible with panoramic windows; this is a very uncomfortable design.

Inversion brings benefits when the curtain is made dark and the curtain is made lighter. Or a thick curtain is hung inside, in front of which a transparent fabric is used in the room.

It is better to decorate a small window not with sophisticated, eye-catching curtains of bright colors, but in more neutral ways. The use of lambrequins and curtains helps to visually expand the windows, and the cornice should be wider than the frame itself, and light tulle or chiffon should be hung on it.

Roman designs are useful for almost all small windows, but keep in mind that they can only be hung on a special type of curtain rod.

Multiple windows

It is rare to find a situation where there is only one opening in the living room. If there are several of them, curtains can be used either completely identical, or repeating through one, and the most varied in appearance (while maintaining symmetry). It is very important to use a homogeneous type of matter.

When you know that there are two or three windows in the living room, this is not enough to make the right decision. One approach should be when placing them on touching walls. Another is when they are all on one of the walls. The key unshakable rule is the complete identity of all openings, the exclusion of asymmetry in a classic interior. A slight difference can only be afforded in a modern setting.

Stylish unity is expressed in the use of visually matching (in color and texture) textile products.

Dormer window

It makes sense to decorate it when direct rays of the sun fall through it. An opening at an angle is best shaded with a roller cassette curtain, when the canvas slides along the side guides when unwinding and twisting, or blinds.

Construction with a balcony

If the hall has not a simple window, but a balcony door, it will be more difficult to properly design this structure.

An important rule: you should not choose dark tones, unless they are immediately diluted with bright and rich colors.

This option looks good when the entire window and balcony block is completely hidden by a light green curtain of large width, and only a small corner is left to open the door. This is especially attractive when overlooking the night sky.

If you want to see the outline of the window sill and the exit to the balcony, installing decor from lilac vertical stripes is a completely original solution; they create a romantic twilight and still let in quite a lot of light.

Panoramic windows and their varieties

Panoramic windows first appeared in one of the provinces of the country - Provence. The French hinterland, the name of which is familiar to any designer, also gave birth to the stylistic direction of the same name, which, by the way, is also in demand among our compatriots. The first mentions of such structures date back to the middle of the 7th century. Of course, glass was not yet widely used at that time, so they can be called “windows” only symbolically, based on their functional purpose. Provence is known not only for its beautiful landscapes with endless rows of lavender fields, but also for its warm, mild climate.

Both of these conditions became the reason for the creation of unusual “doors” (and in Europe they are still called that), which blur the boundary between the house and the surrounding beauty, letting in sunlight and fresh air of the Cote d'Azur. The design was a strong metal frame with two doors, which was located just above the floor level. Glass of this size had not yet been produced at that time. The doors that swung open or moved apart were filled with wood.

After the glass industry made a big leap in development, windows began to let in light even when not opened. The original interior idea began to be used not only in France, but was picked up by other countries. At the moment, there are several classifications of panoramic windows.

Depending on the opening method, structures are divided into three types:

Swing. Traditional design, which is also typical for classic doors. Hinged panoramic windows are convenient for rooms with narrow openings in which there is no room for sliding sashes.
"Harmonic". An original option in which several doors are folded like a book and, when opened, are placed in the “parking” area on the side of the outer wall. "Accordion" is not suitable for small rooms.
Parallel swing. Modern doors have the same design. The doors simply slide apart, thereby saving space.
Taking into account their design features, panoramic windows are divided into two types:
With shtulp. When open, they allow you to enjoy a full panorama, but the doors can only be rotary (that is, they open “towards you” and to the side).
With impost. This vertical jumper is part of the tilt and turn mechanism. Thanks to it, the windows can be opened fully or partially “towards you” in order to slightly ventilate the room. Unfortunately, the impost located in the middle violates the concept of complete openness that is typical for a panoramic design.

As for the frame material, windows are classified into the following types:
Wooden. They are made from larch and oak. To create budget options, pine is used. Since solid wood can deform over time, laminated veneer lumber is used instead. Such windows have a special aesthetics and at the same time “breathe” even when closed.
Plastic. A modern, practical material with which balconies in apartments are increasingly being glazed. PVC is captivating due to its relatively low cost.
Aluminum. The material is lightweight, which makes it possible to produce large and lightweight panoramic windows. Previously, aluminum was used only for cold glazing of summer verandas or attics. After the technology for introducing thermal insulation between the outer and inner parts of the profile was developed, the material began to be used everywhere in all rooms of the house.
Fiberglass composite. The material has become a novelty in recent years, but has already established itself as a reliable, lightweight option. Fiberglass windows will cost a pretty penny.

Based on the types of glass filling, structures are classified into:

Triplexes. There is a transparent film between the outer and inner glass. Multilayering allows the material not to crumble into small fragments upon impact, but to become covered with a network of cracks at the site of local mechanical impact.
Strained glass. It is five to six times stronger than normal. If damaged, the material crumbles into fragments with blunt edges, which reduces the risk of injury to a person nearby. The impact force should be greater than with a regular kick, since the glass also bends quite well.
Electrochromic option. Ultra-modern smart glass, the transparency of which is adjusted using the remote control. The material is very expensive and is used only in luxury apartments or luxury country houses.
Float glass. The material is produced using the same technology: liquid glass melt is poured onto molten metal (tin). Thermopolished glass has reflective properties and does not distort the image, which is typical for ordinary glass.

Large panoramic windows are usually decorated with a decorative layout or frame. It is a shaped grille inside a frame, which can be overhead, interglazed or structural. There are a lot of options for the location of the shutter, which makes it easier to choose an original window design.

Panoramic windows are classified according to their functional purpose into portals and accordions. In the first case, the door to the street or terrace occupies only part of the structure, and in the second case, the entire area. Windows can also be solid or sectional. The second option is more durable and reliable due to the presence of partitions.

Decor

To decorate a window opening with curtains, you should think not only about their appearance, but also about functionality. Minimalism is currently in fashion.

The classic one is always popular when the straight fabric flows down, forming vertical folds. There are several methods of fastening. The most commonly used are loop, string and grommet. Sometimes consumers choose options when the curtains themselves are made in light colors, and the fittings and cornice are dark in color.

Colored curtains are perfect for a Japanese-style living room.

Roman canvases also have their positive features, which very simply regulate the level of lighting. For a single curtain, it is important that it can move freely. Accordingly, it is recommended to avoid hooks and clothespins. Round baguettes will be the best option for eyelets, and closed ones - for multi-layer ones with lambrequins.

If the living room is of impressive size, you should abandon curtains whose patterns are too small. Diagonal patterns and shortened models are not suitable for panoramic windows.

It’s better not to focus attention on a small window; pastel or neutral curtains are perfect. Roman canvases are also suitable here, but you need to take into account that a certain type of cornice must be provided for them.

Experts believe that knowing a few nuances will help create an attractive appearance in a room. Let's consider those that relate to the design of windows in the living room. For a living room made in pastel colors, it makes sense to focus on the window. Otherwise, the room may seem dull and faceless.

Dark curtains with a three-dimensional pattern attract attention perfectly. However, you need to keep in mind that this solution is not suitable for every interior.

If the TV is located directly opposite the window, it is best to opt for blackout curtains. Sunlight will not break through them and interfere with viewing. In addition, if the apartment is located on the ground floor, such curtains will perfectly screen the room from the views of strangers passing by.

It should be borne in mind that heavy fabrics are not recommended for small rooms; they will weigh down the interior and visually make the living room even smaller. Large rooms should be draped with floor-length curtains that have a large and bright pattern. Monograms or lace themes are perfect.

A striped pattern visually extends the room in length or width, depending on the direction of the stripes.

It is recommended to avoid curtains made from natural fabrics in rooms facing south. The fact is that under the influence of the sun it can fade very quickly, and accordingly, its appearance will be lost. Light materials will make the room brighter.

The window can be supplemented with a wooden bench under it, where it is good to place pots of flowers. This element would be a great addition to a country style living room. You can also make shelves for books under the window.

A library under the windowsill will look stylish and give the atmosphere of the living room a special intellectual overtone.

Which curtains to choose?

The choice of curtains is determined by many components. We can talk about a private house with a balcony in the room where guests and household members gather.

In the living room of a city apartment there may be a window with a balcony door. Sometimes there is not one window in the hall, but two or three. It can be small or large. If the windows in the room are located at different heights, you can compensate for this by using a lambrequin or a wide baguette cornice.

Lambrequins are also good to use on panoramic windows. If the living room has access to a balcony, this design model is not suitable: problems will arise with opening the door.

Fabric sheets on several windows, due to the symmetry of the arrangement, will give the room additional height. A common curtain on several window openings will visually make the living room wider. To achieve this effect, you need to use a single tulle curtain that runs across all the windows, and hang sliding curtains along the edges. Curtains with a horizontal pattern will also help to make the window visually wider. Although this is only appropriate in rooms with low ceilings.

To make a low-lying window appear higher, the cornice must be placed right under the ceiling, using curtains with grommets.

The disadvantages of a narrow window, which allows little natural light into the room, can be easily compensated for by a wide cornice. to make the room seem lighter, it is better to avoid heavy textiles: light tulle, organza, thin silk or taffeta will be just right;
in small living rooms, choose window decorations that match the color of the wallpaper: this way you can visually make the room larger (plain curtains or accessories with small ornaments will look equally good);
For a hall of impressive size, curtains with large multi-colored patterns (for example, monograms or lace, plant themes) are suitable.
A striped pattern on curtains affects the perception of the height and width of the window; a horizontal stripe makes the window area wider, a vertical stripe makes it taller.

If the window faces the balcony

Curtains can also be used to decorate those windows that “look” not onto the street, but onto the balcony. You just need it to be convenient to open and close the door leading there. For example, hang a curtain on one side only.

An original and non-standard solution would be to combine three types of curtains. They will look great and not create interference if you need to travel back and forth frequently.
