When developing a project for the future interior of your apartment, you are usually guided by the rule of three “W”:
- Convenience;
- Cosiness;
- Versatility.
Ultimately, the house should create a feeling of “your own fortress”, in which you feel in your place. A one-room apartment with an area of 50 sq.m. is, as a rule, an average housing of small dimensions with a non-standard layout. There are also two-room options with small rooms, each of which can be decorated in completely different styles. The design project for an apartment of 50 sq.m needs to be developed in detail, revealing all its advantages to the maximum.
Living room
In a one-room apartment, to save space, the living room is combined with the bedroom. The room in such cases performs two completely different functions:
- A place to sleep and relax;
- A place for receiving guests and spending leisure time.
It would seem that the noise from guests in the living room and the “sleepy” atmosphere of the bedroom do not go together at all, but with proper zoning of the space, both conditional rooms will not interfere with each other. This design fully meets the standards of “euro-bedroom apartments” and is recognized as a convenient option for young families who cannot afford apartments of substantial dimensions. The living room, regardless of the chosen style, recognizes only a minimum of functional furniture: a coffee table, a spacious sofa, a TV stand, shelving or storage cabinets. If you have chosen a strict classic style or one of the modern trends, then you will have to give up the cute little things, leaving only the “vital” items. If the project is based on the currently popular fusion, Provence or eclecticism, then trinkets and other small design elements are placed on the walls and on open shelves.
You can “play” with styles by designing different zones according to the canons of different directions. For two-room apartments, there is no need for zoning, so the living room can be arranged without regard to neighboring rooms. At the moment, styles such as rich loft, elegant vintage, funny country, “natural” eco-style, contrasting art deco and cool Scandinavian style are popular.
Helpful advice. You should not combine styles in the studio that are difficult to combine and are complete opposites. For example, Provence and modern style do not get along in the same room. Combinations of baroque and hi-tech, antique and ethnic styles with minimalism will look just as ridiculous. The design should have a single line of “contact”, so the general principles of the directions should overlap.
Initial stage of registration
The initial stage of development of any project for arranging a living space begins with highlighting design features. Details such as niches, openings and projections, the placement of wall partitions and window openings can in many cases be used in a positive way.
It is also important to maintain a feeling of free space in a 50-square-meter apartment. The style trends of classicism, with their light shades of design, and more modern trends of minimalism, hi-tech, loft or eco-style, which are distinguished by geometric design, strict lines, non-standard lighting techniques and uniform surfaces, are perfect for this.
And some new design innovations will help turn an ordinary apartment into a unique platform.
To answer the question of how to design an apartment, and the final result of the arrangement was successful, you should pay attention to the following points:
- the total budget for all manipulations, taking into account unforeseen expenses;
- individual design features of the layout with their correct implementation during the work;
- the wishes of each family member, in order to obtain the most functional living space;
- correct placement of each item in the overall interior composition;
- choosing a suitable style.
Zoning
Space zoning is the most pressing problem for studio apartments. Zones can be divided:
- Actually;
- Conditionally.
The easiest way to solve this problem is with the help of decorative partitions. They will not only divide the space, but can also be beneficial if we are talking about through shelving or walls with niches. An arch that will stretch across the entire room will completely protect the sleeping area from the prying eyes of guests, but it will add “heaviness” to the space and ground it. For conditional zoning, curtains or portable screens are suitable. A stand with a TV can also be placed on the “border” zone, thereby fencing off two different “worlds”. One of the most original design ideas is the placement of a universal stand that can be used both for work and for tea drinking. She partitions off the bed and adds another seating area instead of a low coffee table. The actual border will be not only the wall, but also sliding doors made of translucent plastic. If the style allows this, then a pattern can be applied to the surface of the door that will emphasize the general direction of the design. Another type of space zoning can be a two-level floor, when the sleeping area is located on an improvised “pedestal”.
Bedroom
When decorating a bedroom, they most often choose the classic style. Given the lack of space, the furnishings of this room are usually sparse, so you can make up for it with details, luxurious fabrics and wallpaper. Priority should be given to light colors:
- Relaxing blue;
- Delicate turquoise;
- Pale green color;
- Neat pink;
- Soft yellow.
Two or three colors are used in combinations. Everything else is formed in the play of their shades. The bed is chosen from wood with ornate carved patterns. It is covered with a plain blanket, which becomes a field for placing pillows with exquisite patterns. For curtains choose dark colors that highlight the texture of natural materials. The curtains are set off with weightless tulle in light shades. A series of pictures in rich frames will bring life to the bedroom decor and complement the floral wallpaper. The picture will be completed with a few “green” touches in the form of indoor plants on special stands.
Helpful advice. To decorate a bedroom in one of the modern styles, use natural materials: wood, marble, metal, stone. The “cold” interior is diluted with soft and warm patterns on upholstery and wallpaper. A few bright accents in the form of floor lamps, a decorative table or a pair of poufs will break up the feeling of excessive “museum-likeness” of the room.
A small bathroom is not a problem
When decorating a small bathroom, you should give preference to snow-white glossy materials. With their help, you can slightly increase the visual perception of space.

Proper placement of plumbing elements will help free up several meters. So, it is better to install a shower stall instead of the usual bathtub, next to which a washing machine can easily be placed. Simple design techniques will help you achieve excellent results when organizing a living space of 50 sq.m.
Kitchen
The kitchen, as a rule, is designed in accordance with the canons of minimalism. The kitchen set should be compact and functional. Work areas are located between the sink and the stove. The upper shelves should not “press” too much from above. The dining area is either left next to the cooking area, or moved to the living room if we are talking about a 2-room apartment. They zone the space with a narrow bar counter, which will add sophistication to the room and become another work surface. In houses of the 137th series, kitchens are usually large. For such options, large suites and luxurious dining rooms with large dining tables, designed for a large family or a group of frequent visitors, are suitable. The washing machine is also placed in the kitchen and hidden behind one of the cabinet doors.
Helpful advice. The window should not be covered with heavy curtains. Firstly, even with high-quality hood, they will absorb food odors and constantly require washing. Secondly, compact kitchens require maximum light and space, which the window will provide.
Two-room apartments
Transforming the "Khrushchev"
The main requirement of the owners was the presence of a kitchen with a living room, bedroom, nursery, wardrobe and two bathrooms.
Location | Moscow |
Square | 50 m² |
For whom | young family with a child |
Adult bedroom
The main advantage of the apartment is the absence of interior load-bearing walls; this actually frees up your hands during redevelopment; only communications remain tied.
I took the main shades in the decoration of the walls and furniture from the gray palette. This color is universal and quite practical, exists outside of time and finds many color pairs. In the world of design, gray can easily carry the title of “little black dress.”
Window sill transformed into a reading corner
To prevent the apartment from looking faceless, the choice was made in favor of continuous glazing of the balcony. This allowed light to flow into small rooms. In place of the window sill, a wide tabletop appeared, which turned into a corner for reading books.
General view of the bedroom
Proof that a designer renovation doesn't have to cost a fortune was a bed purchased from IKEA. I raised her up a little by placing two mattresses.
Corridor with an art gallery and modules with transparent facades
The corridor became a gallery in which favorite photographs and paintings were located. Along the wall there is a cabinet made of two rows of modules, in the lower part there are transparent doors from IKEA, allowing you to insert various prints, fabric or posters.
Interior in detail
An invisible kitchen is what I would call the kitchen space in this project. To furnish it, a kitchen set with white facades at the top and bottom was ordered.
The sink was moved to the window, an extendable dining table and a Moove lamp were chosen; its lampshade on a special bracket can move along with the table.
The highlight of the kitchen-living room interior is the piano
The inspiration for this project was New York interiors, so paneled facades, high plinths, painted bricks, wooden floors and a calm palette of decoration appeared.
And even the old carpet found its place
The entrance to the bathroom is disguised by a special chameleon door, which has no trim and is painted in the color of the wall. Natural light enters the bathroom through a small window. To obtain a completely enclosed room, a drop-down curtain is provided.
Main bathroom design
The washing machine finds its home on a pedestal that hides communications and a laundry basket.
If you cannot choose between a shower cabin and a bathtub, give preference to the latter. Install it on a concrete slab without a screed, this will allow you to make the side 10 cm lower and get the functionality of a bathtub and the convenience of a shower stall.
Guest bathroom with a hand-painted painting
The guest bathroom, modest in size, contained a small sink, a shelf with a picture and funny accessories, and a box of wine bottles, which served as an impromptu bookshelf.
Children's room design: sleeping area
A shelving unit, chairs and a table were installed in the children's room for the little housewife.
Children's room design: work corner

In crowded but not mad
Location | Moscow |
Square | 52 m² |
For whom | family with two children |
The original layout involved a one-room apartment and a fairly spacious storage room, inside of which there was a ventilation pipe that belonged to a kindergarten attached to the house. Due to the fact that it had not been used for a long time, dismantling did not require approval.
Venice welcomes you
What did we get in the end? Let's start with the hallway, which houses a wall-sized black and white view of Venice.
The only room was divided into two: a nursery and a bedroom. The wall was built from foam blocks, which have good sound insulation properties. The old and no longer working ventilation system, which occupied a third of the bedroom, was dismantled.
The flooring in the rooms is finished with parquet boards in a light oak shade, and heated flooring was installed in tiled areas. Decorative plaster with a silk effect was used for the walls of the kitchen and hallway.
Interior doors are white with a slight varnish sheen. The bedroom is separated from the corridor by a swing door, the children's room by a sliding door.
In developing the design, I relied on a combination of eco-themes and black and white graphics.
The black and white pattern of the hallway floor tiles continued into the kitchen. The latter is represented by a set with white lacquered facades along the top line and black ones at the bottom. The work surface was finished with artificial stone, into which the sink and baseboard were easily integrated.
And in the kitchen there's the Brooklyn Bridge
The theme of cityscapes, which began with the “corridor” of Venice, continued with the kitchen apron, on which an image of Brooklyn was applied using photo printing.
Dining area accented with vibrant green
The initial idea of installing a sofa in the kitchen turned out to be a failure due to the very modest area of the room; an alternative solution was bright green chairs.
A glass chandelier and the same IKEA table added a little white to the kitchen interior. To visually enlarge the kitchen, a mirror was mounted on the wall.
Matte white stretch ceilings are installed in the kitchen, toilet and bathroom. The eco-theme in the bathroom is continued by the mosaic pattern. On the right side, the wall was decorated with dark brown tiles, and the bathtub and sink had green and white horizontal stripes. The walls in the toilet are light green mosaic.
A small photo-instruction for implementing eco-style
The highlight of the bedroom is the headboard, decorated with digital photo wallpaper with a macro image of a green leaf. The remaining walls are covered with bronze-colored decorative plaster with a silk effect.
The white glossy door in the bedroom leads to the dressing room, which is divided into women's and men's sections, and there is also an ironing board here.
Window sill that turned into an office
They abandoned suspended ceilings in the bedroom, opting for a plasterboard structure with lighting. There are no window sills in the rooms; they have been turned into tables.
Arrangement of the sleeping and play area
For the nursery, two main colors were chosen - mint and lilac. A bunk bed with graphic painting was purchased ready-made, with drawers installed in its ladder and a deep storage drawer at the bottom.
Children's room decor
The wall next to the bed was decorated with an image of a Disney princess, and the niche opposite was decorated with a relief in the shape of plaster pencils. The wall on the left was covered with digital photo wallpaper from Rebelwalls.
Used:
- decorative plaster – Decorazza, (price – from 5700 rubles);
- doors - Sofya factory;
- mosaic – Kerama Marazzi;
- digital wallpaper – Rebel Walls;
- bed – Dream Land;
- washbasin, chandelier – “Good decor”;
- suspended ceilings – Cerutti;
- household appliances – Bosch;
- paint – “Paint Market”;
- gypsum panels – Panelli.
Children's
A separate children's room is located in two-room apartments. The smaller room is enough. To save space as much as possible, a dressing room is installed in it to accommodate all the toys and things. Plastic trays are used as additional storage containers. If the family is large and there are two children, then you should think about a bunk bed that will save space. For classes and studies, the child is allocated a separate work area. Universal desks are suitable for its design, which combine shelves for books, space for a computer and niches for toys. In a separate corner there is a “healthy lifestyle” corner with special equipment for exercise and exercise. If the children's room is decorated in eco-style, then an original move would be to place a real tree of knowledge with branches and shelves for books in the corner. Don’t forget about the ceiling, on which a decorative firmament is installed, which is illuminated at night, with stars, meteorites and the moon.
Expert advice
When developing a design project for a two-room apartment, you need to choose a concept that is suitable for each room. It is important to consider the location of lighting fixtures, since dark corners will make even the most stylish room uncomfortable.
It is important to choose comfortable furniture that will not only be original, but also as comfortable as possible. Each zone should have its own purpose; you should not use space for large decorative elements that do not carry any functional load.
Bathroom
The bathroom is usually combined with a toilet. There is not enough space even for one person: it is difficult to turn around in such a room. It is worth thinking about replacing the bathroom with a compact and multifunctional shower stall. The freed up space can be filled with neat drawers or cabinets for storing things. The washing machine is hidden behind special panels, leaving only the drum behind the door “free”. This is the only way the equipment will not spoil the style of the room. If you decide to leave the bathtub, then the space under it is covered with panels and used as additional storage space for powders, conditioners and washing basins. Sliding panels will allow you to hide all this household “disgrace”.
Helpful advice. Nowadays eco-style is in fashion, which can be easily implemented in this room with a minimum of costs. Use different textures and materials to decorate your walls. One, for example, is finished with fine light brickwork. For the other, materials that imitate bamboo are chosen. By the way, real bamboo trunks are placed as an original design element. A rug with imitation green grass and wall-mounted cabinets without legs in light colors will complement the “natural” atmosphere.
Summing up
I hope I was able to convince you that even 50 m² can be comfortable, cozy, ergonomic and stylish. It remains, according to good tradition, to offer you a video in this article and invite you to a discussion on this topic.

Design, Apartment design
If you want to express gratitude, add a clarification or objection, or ask the author something, add a comment or say thank you!
Hallway and corridor
The design of the hallway should be simple, without unnecessary pretentiousness. Cluttering with furniture elements and small details will ruin an already cramped room. In the hallway, instead of standard hangers with a pile of outerwear, modern panel wardrobes are installed. The range of these products allows you to choose furniture to suit every taste and style. The mirror surface of the doors will expand the space. The floor is covered with laminate or neat tiles in bright colors. Armchairs of original shapes and eye-catching colors will echo the riot of colors. A narrow shelf in the ceiling with a couple of decorative vases or sculptures will not take up much space and will complement the decor. Multi-level lighting in the form of a set of miniature light bulbs on the ceiling and floor lamps on long, curved legs will visually expand the hallway. Light sources are also added to the shelves, which beautifully highlight exquisite souvenirs. An extraordinary solution would be to place a glass cabinet with books in the hallway. In general, this room is not designed for storing a library, but for fusion or eclecticism such a move is quite justified.
Guest area
In two-room apartments of 50 sq.m. isolated rooms are the living room and bedroom. The main advantage of these premises is the presence of an individual window opening, which has an advantageous location from the entrance.
If you combine the guest area with the kitchen area, you get a very spacious room in which it is possible to arrange your living space as profitably and comfortably as possible.
If the room has a balcony with a separate exit, then this is undoubtedly a plus, since this area can be additionally included in the living space.
To do this, the partition between the living room and the balcony is removed, the room is subjected to additional insulation, after which this area is used as an additional corner for relaxing, reading books or drinking coffee.
Balcony
In a one-room apartment with an area of only fifty square meters, a balcony or loggia will become not only an observation point with a beautiful view of the park or street, but also a separate office. If the family is large, and the dimensions of the housing leave much to be desired, then a battle will begin for every square. For example, there is no place in the room to receive guests, the hostess dreams of her own workshop or a riot of flora at home, but there is simply nowhere to place all this. Decorating a balcony as a separate functional area will be a real option for saving space. Then you should start insulating your balcony or loggia. After this, you can demolish the balcony door and window to combine the room with an additional room. In cases where a separate office or workshop is placed on the balcony, it is better to leave this functional area as a separate room. For a relaxation area on the loggia, place a narrow sofa or a pair of soft armchairs paired with a small coffee table. Particular attention should be paid to the finishing of walls and floors. A plan for reorganizing the balcony needs to be prepared and finishing work must begin thoroughly so that the balcony no longer resembles a “junk pile” and a place for drying clothes, but becomes a full-fledged room. Window frames are installed with thermal insulation; plastic double-glazed windows are ideal for these purposes. The floor can be installed with heating, the walls are finished with natural wood, but not with lining, which has long become a “beaten” and boring material.
Layouts
Currently, there are not only standard solutions, but also non-standard planning approaches, which include a circular, corner apartment or a type of housing such as a bodice, a butterfly or a vest.
The most important aspect in apartment design is the creation of a competent project. The layout may not always satisfy the needs of the owners, therefore, in this case, it is often subject to radical modification.
It is much easier to distribute space into separate functional areas in an open-plan home. Stalin buildings in a brick house are easy to repair and move walls; Khrushchev and Brezhnevka buildings in a panel house with monolithic reinforced concrete walls are more complex in redevelopment.
One-room apartment 50 sq. m.
To correctly select the most favorable design method, first of all, take into account all the features of the one-room apartment, its specific layout, the presence of niches, protrusions, placement of windows, etc.
This area of 50 square meters is quite substantial for a one-room apartment. Such a space can be equipped with a separate corner in the form of a quiet and cozy bedroom located in the farthest corner. For zoning, it is better to use lightweight or transparent partitions, instead of a solid wall that takes up useful space.
The photo shows the design of a one-room apartment of 50 square meters with a living room combined with a kitchen.
Such a spacious and comfortable apartment of 50 square meters is perfect for one person or a young married couple. For the design of a one-room apartment, you can choose a wide variety of interior solutions, for example, place a sleeping place in a niche, and use the rest of the area for a combined kitchen-living room, this way you can achieve an incredibly practical design.
Two-room apartment 50 m2
In this apartment, for the correct distribution of area and functional purpose of the premises, you should pay attention to who will subsequently live in the two-room apartment. For example, for a family with a child, it is necessary to arrange a children’s room, and for one adult, a layout with a combined kitchen-living room and a separate bedroom would be appropriate.
The photo shows a combined kitchen-living room in the design of a Euro-bedroom apartment of 50 square meters.
Most of the improved Euro-two-room apartments have a balcony or loggia, which becomes an excellent additional space that can be combined with a room to equip a study or recreation area.
A living space with a corner layout can have an equally original design. A corner room with two window openings can easily be divided into two sections using various pieces of furniture or partitions.
Studio apartment with an area of 50 meters
For those who prefer spaciousness and open space, a studio apartment will be the best option for living. Such a seemingly not too large room, with the help of various partitions, can be visually transformed into a fairly large living space.
One of the most popular planning solutions is considered to be the division of a studio into a sleeping area and a living room with a kitchen, dining room, wardrobe and bathroom. To separate the sleeping area, special partitions, screens or arches are mainly used.
It is better to furnish a studio apartment with lighter, compact furniture or choose transformable designs. As zoning, you can also use different elements of furniture, in the form of a rack, cabinet or bar counter, and also divide the space using lighting, contrasting finishes, multi-level floors or multi-level ceilings.
Thanks to zoning, it is possible to achieve a more practical and thoughtful design, designed for comfortable living for two people.

Design styles
The loft style came to us from the largest cities in the USA. Previously, according to its canons, premises that were once non-residential were decorated. It is suitable for a one-room apartment of 50 m2 of the 137th series. Such houses have high ceilings, which vaguely echo industrial premises and attic dwellings. Loft is characterized by the use of rough textures and natural materials. You can save on finishing: brick or concrete walls are welcome. The loft does not recognize any partitions or rough zoning, so owners of two-room apartments will have to think about redevelopment. It is based on a combination of stylish, expensive furniture for the “filling” with the rough finishing of the room itself.
Ethnic style is present in every country. It is characterized by the use of national motifs that echo elements of modern trends. If we are talking about Russian ethno, then traditional painted patterns are used in upholstery, wallpaper or curtains. The ethnic “safari” style is popular with the use of “wild” colors imitating animal skins, painted clay pots, striped blankets, upholstery made from natural fabrics and rough textured flooring. For Arabic ethno they use materials with rich silver embroidery, with which the room is literally wrapped, and simple furniture.
Art Deco is also gaining momentum in popularity. The style is characterized by the use of luxury furniture, which, without further ado, speaks of chic by its very appearance. Only natural materials are selected: wood, metal, granite or marble. Leather, fur, and suede are used for decoration.
Modern style is characterized by the use of plywood, plastic and artificial fabrics. The direction is universal and does not recognize strict boundaries, therefore freely allowing both bright colors and pastel colors. In apartments decorated in a modern style, frequent “guests” are elements from other directions that do not look alien in the room. It is for this reason that the style is suitable for lovers of simplicity and savings on materials.
Marine style loves calm colors and soft lines. The apartments, which are decorated in accordance with the principles of this trend, vaguely resemble cozy cottages by the sea. Blue, white and light blue become the color base for furniture, walls, ceilings and curtains. The use of “marine” elements is encouraged: shells, decorative anchors, ropes and paintings with images of sea battles and ships. An original addition will be reproductions of the famous marine painter Aivazovsky. As for materials, the emphasis is on natural wood and canvas.
Apartment design in various styles
The apartment is in a Scandinavian style, featuring soft, airy pastel shades in combination with bright accessories and textiles. The main colors of the color composition are white tones, which harmonize very favorably with wooden furniture, which is distinguished by a certain laconicism.
The photo shows the interior of a combined kitchen-living room in the design of an apartment of 50 square meters in the loft style.
Minimalism is characterized by particular asceticism and functionality, which welcomes simple geometric shapes and discreet finishing. Such a design solution, due to built-in pieces of furniture, a large amount of light, and minimal decor, creates a feeling of freedom, lightness and airiness in the room.
In Provence design, it is appropriate to use a delicate, slightly faded palette, which gives the atmosphere real warmth and coziness. Here you can often find rough plaster on the walls, vintage furniture with scuffs and various textiles with floral prints.
The photo shows the design of the hall in a modern style in a two-room apartment of 50 sq. m. m.
The classic interior has a solid, elegant and at the same time quite functional design. The room contains furniture made from natural solid wood, luxurious textiles and noble shades. For a more harmonious image, in a classic-style apartment, modern equipment is hidden in drawers, special blocks or niches.
