The bed in the bedroom is the largest piece of furniture that takes up a lot of space in the room. If you are thinking of purchasing a double bed for a small bedroom, then know that it will “take away” four square meters from your room.
Therefore, those who have small-sized bedrooms involuntarily think about how to purchase a bed of the required size and not fill their room.
Bed frame and base
When choosing a bed, first of all pay attention to its frame, on which its strength depends. Modern beds most often come in two types: two backs and side panels, or four panels to which hanging backs are attached. In the second case, the support is the legs or platform. This second option is much stronger.
It is important that the frame is made of wood, then it will be durable. The following types of trees are usually used: pine, oak, beech, ash, alder. Each of them has its own advantages. So, pine beds are resistant to germs and mold. A very important point is that their prices are reasonable.

Alder wood has a uniform structure and beautiful color. Thanks to its softness, it makes beautiful headboards. Beech beds do not creak or crack. Ash has strength and elasticity at the same time, and an oak bed will serve you faithfully for many, many years.
They also make metal frames now; they, of course, are also highly durable. But frames made of fiberboard and MDF attract only their low price, while their strength leaves much to be desired. Cracks often appear at the fastening points, causing the bed to wobble. Furniture made from chipboard is the cheapest and most fragile; it usually lasts no more than five years.
Also pay attention to the number of jumpers that are attached to the frame. There should be 15 of them in a single bed, and twice as many in a double bed. Moreover, the distance between them should not be greater than the width of the jumper itself. The more jumpers, the more reliable the bed.
But never buy beds with metal bars and meshes: they bend under the weight of your body, stretch, creating an uncomfortable position for your back.
Many who choose a bed for the design of a small bedroom opt for a bed with drawers in order to store bedding in them and thereby save precious bedroom space. However, the game is not worth the candle! The fact is that it is important for your health that the mattress, as they say, breathes, and when there are drawers with bedding sets underneath, no air movement occurs. In addition, such beds are fragile.
Nowadays you can often see beds on sale without a backrest, but sleeping on them is not very comfortable. You have to put the head of the bed against the wall, which makes the wall dirty. A headboard is needed because it performs a relaxation function, providing a comfortable position. In addition, purely psychologically, a person feels more protected. Many people like the pillow to rest against the back. If you like to read or watch TV while reclining, choose a bed that has a solid, high headboard. And the slatted and forged headboard is not very comfortable.
Wardrobe bed
What if you hide the bed in a closet? Buying such a model has not been a problem for a long time. By the way, the area of this apartment is only 6 meters! Hidden behind the green doors is a closet and a small but much needed shower.
Another version of a bed pretending to be a wall was chosen for a student girl’s micro-apartment. The berth reclines like the top bunk on a train. A work desk is hidden in the closet, and a table and poufs are hidden under the sofa.
Mattress is the secret to health
It determines how comfortable your sleep will be, so we pay special attention to choosing a mattress. It should be neither too hard nor too soft. Experts advise choosing an orthopedic mattress. It is able to maintain the spine in the correct position during sleep. By the way: if until relatively recently an orthopedic mattress was a rarity, you had to specially order it, but now most modern mattresses are orthopedic, useful and comfortable for the spine. They provide rigid support to the neck and lower back, and bend easily under the hips.
The mattress should not be hard as a board, otherwise back pain may occur. We check it like this: lie on your back, put your hand under your back. If it’s difficult for your hand to move through, but you can easily turn on your side, then this mattress is suitable for you in terms of elasticity.
An orthopedic mattress can be latex or spring. Latex ones completely follow the shape of the body, so they are ideal for the correct position of the back. They are elastic, elastic, hypoallergenic, quickly regain their shape, and are well ventilated. Natural latex is absolutely safe and suitable even for children's mattresses.

The benefit for the spine is that the latex surface distributes body weight evenly and reacts precisely to the part on which pressure is applied. Thus, the load is removed from the spine, blood circulation in the vessels improves, and tension in the muscles becomes weaker. So a comfortable sleep on a latex mattress is guaranteed - remember this when thinking through the design of a small bedroom.
But don’t think that synthetic latex is much inferior to natural latex. No, it has almost the same beneficial properties. It is elastic, but more rigid, and can withstand strong pressure, so it is recommended for overweight people. The prices for such mattresses are lower, but their service life is also shorter compared to natural ones.
Spring models of orthopedic mattresses are also suitable, but pay attention to the fact that there are a lot of springs. Mattresses with an independent spring block, when each spring is in a separate case, are more suitable for the spine. Such a spring block follows the shape of your body much better than a conventional one, where the springs are fastened together.
You can buy not orthopedic mattresses, but regular ones. Products made from seaweed and coconut fiber are considered good. They are comfortable and environmentally friendly. For those who are prone to allergies, holofiber mattresses are suitable.
But opinions differ regarding polyurethane foam mattresses. For example, a group of American scientists believes that such mattresses are harmful, especially for children: when heated to body temperature, vapors of about three dozen chemical compounds are detected. At the same time, other experts are confident that polyurethane foam does not contain volatile compounds hazardous to health in a free state.
The researchers remind you that you need to follow the rules for caring for such mattresses:
- systematically ventilate the mattress and vacuum it;
- dry only in air, never with an iron or on a radiator;
- To restore the orthopedic properties of the mattress, turn it over once a month.
If you purchase the bed itself separately, or the mattress separately, do not forget that it should be no less than 20 centimeters longer than your body. When you lie on the bed, you should not rest your feet on its side.
The bed goes up to the ceiling
Some models are equipped with lifting mechanisms, so during the day you won't even notice that there is a bed in the room.
Size matters
For the design of a small bedroom, the size of the bed is very important, but you cannot save on its space. You won't sleep together on a single bed! The most common width of a double bed is 160 or 180 cm (single beds are half that size, single beds are 100-150 cm). There are, of course, beds 200 cm wide, but they are more suitable for a more spacious bedroom. The length of the bed is 190-200 cm. It should be at least 15 cm longer than your height. The height of the bed is also important: it should reach the level of your knees.
It is also important to place the bed correctly. There should be at least 70 cm between the wall and the side of the bed so that you can make it and do wet cleaning. Such approaches should be left on both sides of the double bed so that everyone is comfortable. Do not place the side part close to the wall: firstly, cold may emanate from the wall, and secondly, it will be difficult to ensure complete cleanliness under the bed, but it is very important to breathe clean, dust-free air, especially during sleep. It is also not recommended to place the bed near the window: yes, it is useful to sleep with the window in ventilation mode, but if the bed is located right next to the window, frequent colds, unfortunately, cannot be avoided.
Small bedroom layout
The ideal layout depends on the correct proportions of furniture to the space. Measure the length and width of your small bedroom. Be sure to include permanent features such as built-in cabinets, shelves, and window sills. You may find it helpful to sketch out your plan on paper or use an app. It's easier to erase a few lines than to move a heavy chest of drawers. Be sure to note the location of windows and doors, as well as the direction in which they open. Don't forget to consider the space you'll need to open your closet. Also, mark where existing outlets are located.
The best bedroom interior layout strikes the right balance between furniture and space. We used the so-called 60:30:10 ratio. This is the quintessential rule of thumb for interior design. Although this often refers to color, we will use it to design a space.
No Transformers!
If you are wondering what to buy for the design of a small bedroom - a sofa or a bed - buy a bed! It must be stationary, non-folding. Now all kinds of furniture transformers are in fashion, this also applies to beds. But listen to the opinion of doctors: choose any transformers you like - tables, cabinets, cabinets, etc., but a transformable bed cannot be comfortable and healthy!
No folding design will provide people with a good orthopedic foundation necessary for proper sleep. In addition, beds are more durable than sofas, and if a mattress sag or loses its shape, it can be easily replaced with a new one. Beds with lifts are also popular today, thanks to which - again - the bed also functions as a wardrobe, but the presence of a mechanism in it is unfavorable for your spine.
Bedroom in a small room - what else is important to know?
Light furniture, walls, floors, windows and bedding make a small bedroom feel larger. A large rug will help anchor the space in the interior. Choose matching bedside tables and lamps that extend across most of the wall, and a dresser and chair on the opposite wall. This is a classic, foolproof bedroom layout that works for everyone. In a bedroom that is long and narrow, it may be tempting to place the bed at the end, but try centering it on a long wall instead.
When deciding what furniture to include in your bedroom decor and what to do without, remind yourself how you will use it? Having a desk in the corner may seem like a great idea, but if it isn't used, it will simply take up valuable space. If you always get ready in the bathroom, do you really need this vanity? Is it time to downsize your wardrobe?
Choosing a style
The frame, base and mattress are the three most important factors for healthy sleep. Everything else, in particular decorative elements, is purely for beauty. At the same time, each of us wants the bed to fit as best as possible into the design of a small bedroom and its style.
Do you want to see your bedroom in Japanese style? Then a platform bed without legs is suitable for you. If the bedroom is classic, a wooden carved bed is perfect. Do you like retro or Provence? Buy a wrought iron bed!
A leather bed is suitable for both classic and minimalist styles. By the way, it’s nice to lean on a leather headboard when you’re reading or watching TV: it gives you warmth in winter and coolness in summer. And with the help of a bamboo bed you will create an ethnic design for a small bedroom.
So, are you convinced that choosing a bed for a small bedroom design is an art? Armed with this knowledge, feel free to go to a furniture store - any sales consultant will immediately understand that he is dealing with a “pro” and will not impose on you something that has not been sold for years.

Bed - second tier
Further more. The bed moves to separate functional areas, thereby creating a second tier in the apartment.
The owner of this apartment had a very small budget and was forced to buy a tiny apartment. To save space, the bed was placed on top of the wardrobe, and in order to save money, the wardrobe has not even been closed with doors yet - the girl will be able to finish the renovation later, when she has saved up money.
And in this apartment they created a whole room within a room: the second floor is a bedroom, and on the first floor there is a work area, a dining area, many storage systems and even a folding bed in case of guests.
Here the bed is located on a deep closet, and a kitchen block is attached to the side.
The designers of this small studio apartment took advantage of the height of the ceiling and built a bedroom on the bathroom. Despite the modest dimensions for an isolated apartment (24 sq. m.), the room seems huge and light, which would never be achieved by placing a bed, sofa, many closets, a workplace and a kitchen traditionally along the walls.
