Bandeau for curtains - materials and purpose of the decorative element. 108 photos of design ideas

Composition and purpose

A classic bandeau consists of a base (non-woven fabric, dublerin, or special fabric with thermal Velcro), decorations (elements of fabric facial decorations), Velcro (fastenings) and threads.

A chic gang element is used to visually increase the space of a small room, especially in one with a low ceiling; depending on the size of your window, the proposed product can visually increase or decrease it.

As you can see, thanks to its wide functions, the bandeau can prompt the redevelopment of the entire room, and of course, such beauty will not go unnoticed by guests.

How to care?

Lambrequins can retain their beauty and naturalness only with proper care. Even though it is mounted quite high, dust still settles on it. It is cleaned with a vacuum cleaner with a soft nozzle.

Bandos absorb unpleasant odors, which is why they should not be used in the kitchen. At the same time, other rooms should be ventilated regularly.

They should also not be washed, as this can ruin the shape and appearance. The fabric is being cleaned

Varieties

The bandeau can be hung vertically or horizontally, and can also be sloped at any angle that suits your design. The most common is the horizontal option, which can cover part or all of the cornice completely. It is so beneficial to decorate a small window, but you will need to add chiffon or any other light fabric, otherwise the rigid lambrequin will lose its purpose.

There is also a more complicated version of such curtains - a figured bandeau, decorated with tassels, lace, swags, and draperies. Such curtains can be used both in the living room and in the bedroom, it all depends on the right combination of materials, moderation of decoration and combination with the overall interior.

Variety of bandeaus for curtains

Like any other decorative element, bandeaus vary in design, structure, material and size. The appearance of the decoration is regulated only by the designer, but there are some common features by which they can be roughly classified:

Classic bandeau. Mostly needed to cover the cornice. Based on the shape of the window, it can be horizontal or vertical, usually it is not full of bright fabric or decorations, it merges with the curtain and makes it look as organic as possible against the background of the rest of the room. A classic bandeau is suitable for a minimalist romantic style in light or dark colors. Despite the fact that thick fabric is recommended under a bandeau for curtains in the hall, with the classic version it is allowed to use a thin tulle curtain, preferably a plain one.

Openwork bandeau. It is rather an attribute of luxury that does not turn into pretentiousness. If your room is furnished in Victorian style, then openwork decoration with white or colored lace will replace heavy, tasteless curtains with patterns, which only make the window appear smaller, and will add grace. It’s good if the room with such a decorative bando is well lit - the lace looks very advantageous in the light.

Vertical gang. A beautiful window does not have to be a large window. There are a lot of non-format window openings in small rooms, attics, corner rooms - they can also be decorated with gangs by ordering a special vertical model. They exist and are very common, because they look no worse than massive horizontal ones. They will suit any interior, will not take up much space and will not make a window stand out in a small room – ideal for a standard apartment.

The choice depends only on you - the abundance of models on the market will not leave you without the desired decor. If you decide to add such decor to your interior, all you have to do is think about whether to order a bandeau or make it yourself.

Making a bando with your own hands

A distinctive feature of the bandeau is its rigid frame base, which is attached on top of textile curtains or tulle. Often, to make this type of lambrequin, a professional bandeau is used - it is sold in rolls in specialized stores. But if it is not possible to purchase this material, you can use non-woven fabric or dublerin.

Before you start sewing, you need to take all measurements of the window and calculate the exact size of the future product. Then you need to make a sketch of the planned product, taking into account the size of the window and the wall on which it is located.

After all the measurements and the sketch are completed, we begin making the pattern. It is more convenient to do it on a paper surface; newspaper or old wallpaper are suitable for this. This pattern is easy to cut and then try on the window to make sure that the finished product will fit the room perfectly.

Then you need to create a base - transfer the pattern to the material itself, prepared for the lambrequin. Try to apply the design on the adhesive side itself, otherwise you will end up with a mirror image of what was originally planned.

After the base is created, we begin to connect it with the fabric. Most often, it is recommended to use dense natural fabrics for bandeaus - cotton, linen. When cutting material according to a pattern, you should leave allowances: at the bottom and sides - 3 cm, at the top - 5 cm. This is done so that the fabric can be processed later without losing the dimensions of the final product. The next step is to apply the fabric to the adhesive surface and smooth it with an iron with a steam function from the center to the sides. In this case, we do not use allowances; they must retain their originality.

Choosing fabric for a bandeau

Please note that the gang is not only a decorative element, but also a reinforcement for the cornice. If you make it from light fabric, the structure will simply hang over the curtain, without creating any support for the entire structure. Choose stiff and dense fabric from well-known manufacturers - this way you will reduce the chance of running into low-quality material that will bulge or look like rough cardboard.

As for the colors, it is advisable to choose something monochromatic, especially if the curtain is bright and contains any, even minor, ornament. Although the bandeau is a continuation of the curtain, it should stand out against its background, clearly showing that there are several elements in the design of the curtain. If you have found fabric with patterns for bandeau curtains and are absolutely sure that it will look great in your interior, ignore this advice and do as your taste and desire to arrange the room as best as possible advises.

Lambrequins are often decorated with bows, cords or tassels; if the curtains are large and wide, then this is appropriate. If you want such additional decor, take care of the color compatibility of the purchased fabric and decorations.

Photos in the interior of the rooms

Decorative window treatments can effectively decorate and completely transform the interior of any room.

Children's

A rigid lambrequin is considered an ideal option for a children's room. The decorative canvas can depict cartoon characters, illustrations from your favorite books, funny animals, sea creatures, such as dolphins or starfish.

Living room or hall

When choosing, you need to focus on the style of this room. The lambrequin should be beautiful and aesthetically attractive, since it is the interior of the living room that creates the overall impression of the apartment.

Selecting the final design

After we have “glued” the base of the bandeau, we need to start processing its edges. To do this, you can use any of the following methods:

  • bias binding (this is a woven material used for processing the edges and edges of products, sold in finished form in specialized stores by the meter, easily and easily attached to the edge with a sewing machine);
  • decorative braid (purchased ready-made, attached to the outside of the edge using a glue gun, sewing machine or manually);
  • hemming (made from the allowances of some decorative fabric, while to give strength it is fixed with a special adhesive material using an iron, and then fastened with a seam between the layers of the bandeau);
  • lining (also made using allowances of the selected decorative fabric and the back part of the lining material, which must first be sewn together, then turned inside out, ironed so that the back fabric is not visible, and put on the base of the lambrequin).

When the curtain band is ready, place it on the cornice. To do this, it is most convenient to use adhesive tapes (two-component), with one part attached to the cornice, and the second sewn to the lambrequin itself. The advantage of this mount is that you can attach different lambrequins that fit in size to one mount on the cornice.

Types of lambrequins

Just a few years ago, only straight models were produced. But as the popularity of the products grew every year, there was an urgent need to improve the design.

After all, ready-made curtains with a lambrequin, having a strictly straight shape, were suitable only for decorating rooms in a classical style.

This product was not at all suitable for more modern styles. Therefore, over time, products of various shapes began to appear, decorated with braid, tassels, and fringe.

The design of lambrequins is divided into 2 main types:

Bandeau or rigid is a rigid fabric strip attached to a lining. The width, length, and shape of the product can be very different.

For example, the most popular bandeau models are products with wavy and clear lines.

For modern styles such as modern or high-tech, lambrequins with regular geometric shapes are perfect.

Products with wavy lines are widely used to decorate window structures in rooms decorated in a classic or country style.

Soft - lambrequins, which are classified as this type, differ from hard ones by being more soft. Such products look more attractive, sophisticated and very elegant.

In the past, they were very often used to decorate palace halls, because they emphasized the expensive and luxurious furnishings.

A little history

In the 17th century, a new aesthetic direction was formed in European culture, which was called “classicism”. It established strict rules. They applied to everything: painting, literature, architecture. The decorators of palace interiors also took a new philosophy as a basis, so the entire interior space of the residences of kings, nobles and simply noble citizens was built strictly symmetrically, using elements that could emphasize the luxury and wealth of the family clan.

For this, openwork stucco, gilding and expensive textiles were actively used. With the help of complex draperies, a beautiful design was created for large window openings. To prevent the upper part of the fabric fastening from being noticeable, they began to cover it with hard lambrequins. They held their shape well, completely hid the cornice underneath, and helped create a clear line that fit so well into the overall design style.

The rigid lambrequin is called “bando”. In the era of the birth of classicism, this element was still actively used to decorate the supports on which the canopy covering the bed was attached. This design gave the room a unique charm.

Types of gangs and their purpose

There are 2 types of bandeaus: horizontal and vertical. The first type, vertical, is used quite rarely, for example, to replace heavy curtains. But horizontal is common in interior use; lambrequins can be simple in design.

The most common option is a horizontal stripe. Such lambrequins are used if the window needs to be closed completely or only a certain part. It looks simple, but at the same time modern and stylish, without unnecessary details. Basically, this type is used to decorate small windows; a rigid lambrequin can be complemented with a light chiffon curtain or night curtains.

The bandeau lambrequin looks good both with and without additional decor.

A more complex option is a textured one with a lining, which is complemented by various finishing details. This option is used to decorate large living rooms and halls.

Both options can be used in the interior of many rooms, the main thing is to approach design planning correctly and use a moderate combination of materials and color shades.

Rules of care

In order to maintain the presentable appearance of the bandeau longer, you need to properly care for it. Dust constantly accumulates on it. Its presence is immediately noticeable, so the fabric needs to be vacuumed periodically using a soft attachment. You cannot wash a hard lambrequin: it will immediately lose its shape.

If there is heavy contamination, you can clean the bandeau with a damp cloth. In particularly difficult cases, it is better to call specialists to your home or use dry cleaning services. Despite their apparent complexity, lambrequins do not create any special problems during operation.
