Lambrequins for the bedroom: types, forms of drapery, choice of fabric, design, color

Types of lambrequins

The following main varieties are distinguished:

Hard (bando)

Bandeaus are often sewn from hard types of fabrics. They hold their shape perfectly, do not stretch or deform.

The photo shows a bedroom and a hard, plain lambrequin with curtains on the window.

Soft

Such a lambrequin can be a straight strip of fabric or a decorative design of curtains that effectively falls in folds.

Combined

Combines hard and soft drapery, repeated in a certain sequence.

The photo shows a bedroom and windows with combined lambrequins.

Hard

Initially they were made of wood. Currently, rigid lambrequins are a strip of fabric that has a rigid base such as friseline or bandeau. They are more suitable for the strict style of the room - they look ideal in studies and offices decorated in classic English or Russian design. Such products skillfully mask various imperfections of the cornice or window frame.

The bottom edge of rigid lambrequins can be either straight or curved (or curly). They are decorated with braid, fringe, cord, and bugles.

Forms of drapery of soft lambrequins

When properly combined, exquisitely shaped draperies look especially interesting and impressive.

Coquille

An integral part of most lambrequins. It is laid out using vertical folds that connect towards the middle. There is both a classic mold cut and a bias cut.

Swags

Symmetrical or asymmetrical semicircles with soft folds. Depending on the style of the interior, they are sometimes supplemented with various decorative elements.

Jabot (de jabot)

A vertical piece similar to a swag or semi-swag, with freely hanging straight, oblique or stepped edges.

Perekid (semi-swag)

A fabric sheet that is thrown over a rod cornice, causing it to sag and form an elegant drapery.

Tie

Vertical folds of fabric forming a beveled line towards the bottom. This element goes well with swags.

Cascade

A piece of fabric draped along an inclined line. It is located on the side of the entire curtain structure.

Material

Each type of material in its own way allows lambrequins to acquire an unusual and unique look.

Veil

Smooth and soft translucent fabric that holds drapery perfectly. It transmits and diffuses sunlight well.

Organza

Thin, transparent, airy, but at the same time quite durable fabric. Made from silk, polyester or viscose. It does not interfere with the flow of light into the room and does not block the beautiful view from the window.

Felt

A material that is somewhat reminiscent of wool drape. Combines pleasant softness and incredible strength.

Chiffon

Delightfully lightweight fabric with amazing shine and subtle color shifts.

Capron

Elastic and elastic decorative material that can withstand significant stretching without loss of quality and presentable appearance.

Atlas

It has an elegant appearance, has the ability to reflect the sun's rays and creates very impressive draperies. Pairs especially well with a sheer veil.

How to care for lambrequins, can they be washed?

Even the location under the very ceiling in the bedroom does not save the lambrequin curtains from contamination, and the owners from including them in the cleaning list, because the dust present everywhere also settles there, certainly affecting the appearance of the thing. Accordingly, for a presentable appearance, this element should also be cleaned in a timely manner. It is worth noting that regular care allows you to delay the time of washing.

The cleaning method depends on how exactly the decor item is attached. There are two main options:

  • Directly on the cornice, using tape equipped with fixing hooks.
  • Sewn/glued on top of the curtain itself.

The first ones can easily be removed from the fastenings and shaken out well or, in some cases, knocked out, as is usually done with carpets (if the element is heavy and the fabric itself allows this).

The second (like both types, if desired) are cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. It is enough to carefully go over them with a nozzle for upholstered furniture once a week during cleaning. A soft brush is suitable for the same purposes. You can also use a slightly damp cloth. You shouldn’t get it too wet: its main purpose is to collect dust. Wet will just turn it into dirt and create unaesthetic stains on the surface of the material that needed to be cleaned.

The possibility of washing, when it is still necessary, depends directly on the material, which should be checked when purchasing. The sales consultant must give recommendations on the proper care of the product.

If the composition of the fabric is still unknown to you, it is advisable to contact the salon where you purchased the specific product. They will be able to identify the material, making the care process easier for you in the future. Often, a cleaning service is also available there. You can use dry cleaning if you don’t want to worry about the result.

It's definitely worth giving the lambrequins made of chenyl there, which shrink a lot when washed. The same applies to velvet ones, for which this process is completely contraindicated.

Cotton and linen lambrequins can be washed independently, but if they have been previously decated, otherwise the fabric will also shrink.

Products made from natural silk and wool can be washed by hand, but very carefully and following all the rules for caring for the material.

It is easy to care for polyester and tulle: in hand wash mode and a temperature of 30 degrees, they can be washed in a machine with mild detergents.

Machine washing lambrequins has its own characteristics:

  • Minimum or medium spin is set.
  • To protect against stretching, it is better to wash in a special linen bag or a simple pillowcase.
  • It is recommended to supplement with a rinse regimen. The product may change color in the sun if powder remains on it.
  • The iron cannot be used until it is completely dry.
  • After washing, the lambrequins are laid out horizontally or hung immediately. In the second case, some materials themselves take shape without the help of ironing.

Design options

Thanks to the stylish design of lambrequins, you can create an original composition that will fit perfectly with the entire interior.

Openwork

Curly patterns on a lambrequin make the room more elegant and change the overall appearance of the interior. Such carved designs make it unusual and sophisticated.

Asymmetrical

They look very impressive and extravagant. The basis is often taken to be a rectangle of an unusual shape, for example, oblique or on one side.

Buffs

Interesting folds create a certain touch of romance and luxury in the room. Puffs are most often used in the design of classic interiors.

With fringe

Fringed lambrequins stand out aesthetically and create a beautiful and graceful environment. With them, the interior takes on a finished and holistic look.

With tassels

They transform the room and suit different interior styles. For a bedroom, choosing such decor will be especially appropriate, as it will make the room more comfortable.

Simple

Plain, free-hanging fabric with the simplest design. However, this does not mean that such models simplify the appearance of the curtains and the room as a whole.

Short

Visually increase the height of the window opening. Will appeal to those who love an abundance of light.

With flowers

A floral theme will be a wonderful decoration for the bedroom, improve your mood and create a festive atmosphere in the room. And if the patterns with flowers on the lambrequin also echo the textiles on the bed, then the result is an excellent and complete picture.

Arc-shaped

Arched assemblies of different widths and depths. They combine well with each other and can be made from either translucent or curtain fabrics.

Tips for choosing a lambrequin

When choosing one option or another, you will have to take into account several nuances and secrets:

  1. Due to the fact that such decorative elements can visually “conceal” height, they are suitable primarily in rooms with a high ceiling. If the height is less than 2.5 m, it is better to focus on vertical patterns on the fabric.
  2. Standard lambrequins in curtain sets usually have a height of about 40 cm. If you want to reduce the size, you should first try on a smaller option to see how it will look in a particular case.
  3. In small living rooms, options with a small number of flounces are more suitable, and voluminous lambrequins with a large number of elements are preferable in large halls.
  4. On the sunny side, it is better to choose heavier and denser materials for curtains, but in other cases, organza or veil are perfect for both ready-made curtains and for sewing a lambrequin on your own.
  5. If a lambrequin is selected for 2 adjacent windows at once, it is better to choose a mold shape that emphasizes the boundaries of the two openings. This will help add extra space.
  6. When decorating a window with a balcony, you should take a closer look at asymmetrical shapes, provided that they do not block free access.
  7. When designing a small window, it is taken into account that a fully open opening visually enlarges the window. Therefore, it is not recommended to go below the window opening. Throws, cascades or asymmetrical options with fringe and tassels are appropriate here.
  8. In the case of a narrow window, on the contrary, it is advisable to partially cover the opening with a lambrequin. With high ceilings, models containing folds will look most impressive.
  9. In any case, rigid options will help to “add” centimeters to the actual height.
  10. Corner windows love symmetrical design. A tie or chill necklace in the corner of the room is appropriate here.
  11. To ensure that the design does not look too busy, the lambrequin cannot be longer than 1/5 of the total length of the curtain.
  12. In large rooms, large details, dark shades, and horizontal patterns are suitable.
  13. Small spaces require choosing lighter pastel colors, preferably vertical patterns.

In a small kitchen, for example, it is better to hang small compositions or use curtains without a lambrequin at all.

When choosing the design of curtains, it is worth taking into account the general style of the decor so that there is no feeling of incompleteness or, conversely, excessive pomp.

Photos in various styles

The length, shape, as well as decorations for lambrequins are selected in accordance with the overall style of the bedroom.

Modern

Sophisticated and functional. A bedroom in this style should not be cluttered with intricate designs made of heavy fabrics. Here simple and graceful folds without massive ruffles, fringes and tassels will look much more appropriate. When placing the set directly under the ceiling, the room visually appears higher.

Classic

Complex multi-row lambrequins made of dense fabric are a basic component of the classic style. They are able to create an elite atmosphere in the room and add luxurious motifs to it.

Baroque

Majestic style also implies the presence of soft and smooth lines. The designs should be simple and match the decoration and decor. Golden shades fill the room with a precious glow and make it even more presentable.

Minimalism

A plain, straight bandeau with clear lines will be a real designer find in a minimalist bedroom interior. It will give the room strict sophistication and visually enhance the space.

Provence

In the provincial French style, light, modest options with floral motifs are used. They will especially match the interior and be combined with a simple, cozy and homely Provence.

Country

For country style, lambrequins made of lace and transparent fabric are suitable. This will give the window even more appeal and rustic chic.

Selecting the shape according to size

As noted above, a lambrequin can completely change the design of a window. It can not only decorate the opening, but also change the proportions of this wall. This decoration would be appropriate for a large window opening.

If this type of decoration is used around a small window, then it is better not to leave any free space. To do this, stylists drape the entire plane around the window opening, occupying the space from ceiling to floor, as well as from corner to corner.

Straight, rigid decoration elements will make the wall with the window elongated horizontally and visually enlarge it. And soft, beautiful lambrequins will help make the whole room “taller.”

Straight pieces of fabric with long ends at the edges, reminiscent of the tails of a tailcoat, make the middle of the composition light and airy, shifting the centers of gravity to the edges of the wall.

And small folds of the frill visually reduce the space. Therefore, they are not recommended for use in small bedrooms.

The size of the lambrequin also affects the perception of the entire composition as a whole. Traditionally, the top drapery takes up 1/4 to 1/5 of the height of the entire wall. For typical apartments in multi-storey buildings, the ideal ratio of wall height to lambrequin height is 1:6.

You can find ready-made lambrequin patterns and master classes on how to sew them yourself in the following course:

Narrow decor creates an airy feeling in the bedroom. A massive lambrequin, occupying more than a quarter of the distance from the ceiling to the floor, on the contrary, seems to press the entire composition to the floor.

Color spectrum

Colors help adjust lighting and maximize overall comfort.

White

Will allow you to always be in trend. It will add a beautiful and fresh look to the bedroom and make it bright and cozy.

Red

With skillful use of this color, you can achieve beautiful results and create a rather unusual interior. To ensure that red does not influence the mood in a negative way, it is combined with more neutral shades.

Green

Pleasant, due to its closeness to nature, the color evokes associations with a beautiful emerald stone. Green lambrequins in the bedroom interior provide a calm and relaxing environment.

Brown

Lambrequins of this color in the interior of a room represent a very deep and beautiful decor.

Violet

Contradictory and complex. It will easily transform the interior, set its mood and attract attention.

Blue

Creates an atmosphere of cleanliness and perfect freshness. This color has stability and monumentality.

Lilac

In the bedroom this shade looks truly chic. It is organic and attractive in any combination and manifestation. Adds novelty, charm and unique elegance to the room.

Pink

Creates a subtle and sophisticated interior. With pink lambrequins, the spirit of aristocracy and tranquility reigns in the bedroom. They imbue the room with depth and a sense of style.

Two-color

Quite an interesting design option that will be an accenting element of any interior. Such combinations are especially suitable for creative people who often make extraordinary decisions.

Comfortable decor

After looking through our photos, you can easily choose an option that matches any interior. The use of translucent material, chic drapery with soft lines is more typical of the “classics”. Laconic models made of linen or cotton will fit perfectly into modern design.

The choice of expensive fabrics when decorating bedroom curtains is not necessary. The main thing is that they harmoniously combine with the overall style. For window decoration, it is advisable to choose decorative pillows, as well as a bedspread of similar shades. Numerous textile industry brands produce so-called companion fabrics. They are made in the same color scheme, differing in patterns and textures.

Decoration of non-standard windows with lambrequins

The textile ensemble should correctly emphasize the original shape of the unusual window opening.

On a small window

Avoid using overly dark and gloomy colors. It is advisable to give preference to simple-shaped draperies in light colors; they will visually create the illusion of an impressive window opening.

For two windows

To decorate windows that are located nearby, they often choose the same decor that harmoniously combines with each other.

Asymmetrical window

Draperies will competently hide the imperfections of the window and room and place the necessary accents. Properly selected designs will flawlessly merge with the bedroom interior and make it non-trivial, sophisticated and unique.

Bay window

The choice of decor for bay windows depends on the overall interior of the room. Lambrequins will be a win-win option for a bedroom that has enough space. The density of the fabric depends on the amount of incoming light.

What are lambrequins and what are they for?

It would seem, what is the use in the house of an additional piece of fabric located under the ceiling? However, the creators of the lambrequin included many more functions in this invention than might seem at first glance.

A lambrequin is a dense fabric located horizontally to the plane of the window. It covers part of the opening, usually the top. In some varieties of this type of draperies, in addition to horizontal, vertical elements are also used.

Lambrequins for the bedroom perform the following functions:

  • protect the room from sunlight;
  • limit the open space of the window;
  • complement the design of the room.

By covering the upper part of the window opening, the lambrequin prevents access to vertical sunlight. They are typical for the middle of daylight hours, when the heat is most intense. The decorative strip effectively protects the room from the midday heat. At the same time, there is enough open space for the room to be well lit.

In addition, the lambrequin covers the upper part of the window, in which the cornice is located. The fabric disguises the fasteners, hiding the barbell and rings from the view of spectators.

And such decoration significantly improves the design of the window and creates a powerful accent. It adds completeness to a composition made from fabrics of different textures, colors and densities.

Combinations with curtains

Allows you to correctly mix different options for curtain ensembles on one window.

curtain

For medium-density curtains, soft draperies made of the same fabric are suitable. Expressive folds, combined with tiebacks on the curtains, will create an interesting and delicate composition and will become a truly worthy window frame.

Curtains (tulle, etc.)

The combination of fabrics that have the same color, but with different textures, looks especially elegant. Smooth, flowing fabrics combine very elegantly with soft lambrequins.

Selection of curtains for lambrequin

It is equally important that the lambrequin is harmoniously combined with the curtains.

  1. If printed fabric was used to make the lambrequin, the main curtains can be plain. Tiebacks are usually made from the same fabric as the lambrequin, or from cord with tassels. The option looks interesting when the lambrequin and tieback are made of fabric with a print, and the curtains and crossover are made of plain fabric.
  2. You can additionally use a fabric of a contrasting color, matching the color with thin curtains and drapes, as well as an additional layer of organza with embroidery or a pattern, in harmony with the lambrequin. The window can be decorated with an additional curtain with multi-colored vertical stripes that match the tone of the wall decoration
  3. A window curtained with Roman blinds or blinds can be additionally decorated with a rigid lambrequin and curtains.

Children's bedroom design

For a girl's bedroom, simpler but sophisticated products with ruffles, puffs, ruffles, lace or braid are suitable. Multilayer compositions, both translucent and denser fabrics, would be appropriate. For a boy's room, plain, bright or multi-colored solid lambrequins with appliqués of superheroes or favorite hobbies are often used.

Choosing ready-made curtains for the bedroom

Today there is no need to sew curtains and curtains with your own hands. There is a whole network of curtain stores that sell not only finished products, but also make them to order according to individual measurements and models.

When choosing ready-made curtains for your bedroom, you should be guided not only by your desires, but also by how well this or that design and color will suit the interior of this room.

For large bedrooms, multi-layer curtains with drapery secured with cords and a folded or folded lambrequin are suitable. In a small room, on the contrary, it is advisable to make fewer folds and folds. Otherwise, the bedroom may look like a box. Although, perhaps, someone will like this bedroom option.
