Today, for many owners of small-sized housing, the issue related to the correct arrangement of a niche in the hallway is considered relevant, because this idea is an excellent alternative to huge cabinets. This is also an original decorative option, which, thanks to the play of tones, brings harmony to the room.
In addition to its decorative properties, the design can be used to adjust the perception of the area of the room.
An extraordinary design of a niche will give you the opportunity to abandon boring cabinets. Instead of purchasing cabinets for a niche in the hallway, the structure can be equipped with shelves for outdoor accessories and shoes.
To highlight such a decorative element, you can make spot lighting around its perimeter, arranged inside. For more elongated options, small ceiling lighting fixtures are suitable.
Beautiful design solutions and ideas
With the help of an arch it is easy to visually separate the corridor space from the adjacent rooms. This element will look stylish and will let in more light than the most transparent doors of the usual type. Designers often recommend using a staircase as part of an original decorative space.
When you decide to decorate your hallway in a minimalist style, limit the number of different colors to two or three. Any contrasting tone that you like can be used as a base.
It’s a good idea to introduce a large number of light sources into the interior, but their color must be in harmony with both the walls and the ceiling. A shelf or mirror frame can be a bright accessory in a minimalist environment.
Externally aged wood and deliberately uneven laying of plaster will help to express the spirit of a Provençal corridor. A vintage room is decorated with either forged decor with unique weaving or deer antlers.
Only where there is enough space should you consider options for installing flower pots. Do not forget that flowers will need constant care, and very busy people should avoid them.
You can expand a too narrow space by:
- Painting walls in the lightest possible colors;
- Covering them with wallpaper with a horizontally stretched pattern;
- Focus on gloss;
- Applications of mirrors.
Among all the bright tones, green will be the most attractive, but we are talking about cheerful varieties of it, and not about dark, thick tones. White and green combinations will add fun and festive mood to the interior. The corridor allows you to use a large pattern of wall covering. As an accent it will suit any wall. It is undesirable to use the strip on more than two-thirds of the surfaces, otherwise the room will appear too narrow or understated.

If the width is sufficient, it is worth hanging shelves of moderate depth to accommodate books and decorative elements. Proper lighting will help make an elegant mirror even more beautiful. Large photographs or black and white portraits, landscapes and still lifes will fit perfectly into a minimalist hallway. Some of the stories are suitable for the high-tech format.
Door systems: we consider all options
Once you've chosen your shape, it's time to think about which doors to choose. Or rather, a system for opening them. Let's look at all the options and you will understand what is best for you.
Swing doors
The most inexpensive, quite convenient and durable option. There is one drawback to such doors - the dead zone that forms when the doors open.
But on the other hand, additional fittings can be attached to such doors, on which it is convenient to hang belts and belts, for example.
So, if you don’t have an urgent question about preserving useful space down to the centimeter, such a system would be a good solution.
But, do not forget that floor-length mirrors on such doors will not look good, since handles need to be attached.
Sliding doors
There are no dead zones outside, yes. But it is inside!
If you order a two-door compartment version, then be prepared for the fact that, having opened one door, you will have to reach deep into the closet for some things that are closed by the second door.
Or frantically swap them every two minutes, which is very inconvenient. A sliding system is good if the closet is large and has at least four doors.
Also, do not forget that for a compartment system you need to purchase expensive fittings, which fail much more often than simple hinges.
Accordion doors
The option is convenient, no doubt. There are no dead zones at all. One minus is that the price is steep and the fittings “fly” quickly if you are greedy.
But here it’s up to you to decide what’s more important to you: savings or comfort.
HOW TO BUILD A CABINET INTO A NICHE
Hi all! Do you know what we'll talk about today? How to build a closet into a niche? So, about niches!! And not just about niches, but about those special ones that we want to adapt to the built-in wardrobes of our dreams.
I didn’t think that this question could be interesting at first, but the other day I went to the designer’s supervision of my project and there we discussed for a very long time one niche that I designed specifically for a closet for customers’ outerwear. All the questions raised by the customers and the foreman gave rise to the idea in my head that the same questions are most likely asked by absolutely everyone who decided to do the same - not just install a cabinet, but build it into a niche.
Why do we build in a closet? Firstly, it is very convenient. Secondly, it is very modern. Thirdly, it is very beautiful! I love when cabinets are not only built-in, but also visually merged with the walls, especially if we are talking about a small space.
designer Maria Kunyakina
Let's start with the theory. What is a NICHE - this is a recess in the wall for placing decorations (statues, vases), furniture (cabinets, sofas), etc.
Where do niches come from in our houses and apartments? It’s simple: either we already got it along with the architecture of the apartment or house, or we are building it specially.
Thus, each of us answers the main question - do I want a built-in wardrobe? And if I want to, where can I get a niche? To build specifically or an existing one will do. To find answers to your questions, let’s discuss all the nuances of this story to make it a little easier for you to decide on your desires.
How to find the perfect size for your case?
It's simple: you need to understand the PURPOSE:
WHERE AND WHAT IS THIS BUILT-IN CABINET PLANNED FOR! The entire further history of construction is based on this.
designer Natalya Komova
If in the first case (the niche already exists) we operate with the dimensions, which are a given, and based on them we make a decision about WHAT can be done there, then for the second case we clearly need to know the dimensions of the niche in order to draw a plan and give clear instructions for builders.
As a rule, when designing niches for built-in furniture, I use my experience and the ergonomics of the space. It is very difficult to answer unambiguously the order of work on planning decisions, since a built-in wardrobe is an organic structure of the interior. And the situations, needs, opportunities are very, very different.
I repeat - it is very important to understand WHAT THE CABINET IS FOR!
by theletteredcottage.net
A closet for clothes is one thing, and a closet for chemicals in the bathroom is quite another. I will now describe many things using the example of a wardrobe (Read “How to plan a Dream Closet” - HERE. The article that received the most recognition from readers), and you will be able to “tailor” each of your stories in the image and likeness specifically for yourself. Because the principles are the same for clothes and washing powders.
Any niche has THREE important dimensions:
- HEIGHT
- WIDTH
- DEPTH
- I would also add the height of the OPENING to the niche
Let's look at each dimension separately and start with depth.
DEPTH
The standard depth of a wardrobe that is familiar to us is 60 cm. The ergonomics of this depth consists of the standard width of the hangers and the space for convenient use (I described it in great detail in the article about Wardrobe-METCHES).
If we open any website with cabinet furniture and carefully look at the dimensions of the cabinets, then in almost all of them we will find plus or minus one size of 58-60 cm.
Based on this, the depth of the NICHE is built either for a specifically selected cabinet in a store plus a small tolerance for installation. (I try to make a tolerance of 5 mm if we are talking about a finished product, for example, PAX from Ikea.) or according to the standards of WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE THERE WILL BE.
In this project ( “28 meters by the seashore” ) we built just a 60 cm deep PAX into a niche that we specially built:
I build the niche in such a way that the cabinet doors are perfectly flush with the wall. Please note that the overall depth of the niche is the cabinet body plus the thickness of the door!
Where do niches come from in our houses and apartments? It’s simple: either we already got it along with the architecture of the apartment or house, or we are building it specially.
If your niche is less than 60 cm deep, then you can place shelves there for storing shoes, or shelves for chemicals, you can place a “narrow closet” with a hanger pull-out system “for you,” etc. There are a lot of options, the main thing is that it is COMFORTABLE to use and everything looks aesthetically pleasing.
by San Francisco Organized Interiors
The main thing is that either you initially have the opportunity to create the DEPTH that you need to complete the niche of your tasks, or you operate with the GIVEN layout, the capabilities of the room, a ready-made niche from builders, etc., and look for the best and most sensible use for it!
WIDTH
The width of the niche directly depends on the following important factors:
- The size and availability of the room is an obvious factor. As a rule, we all want the more the better. But there is always a BUT.
planning a niche for a built-in wardrobe from IKEA for a studio project (realized project)
- We build in a ready-made cabinet or make it to order - I think this is also an obvious factor, but let’s discuss it in more detail.
photo from the completed project of Oksana Panteleeva's studio
If you clearly understand that the cabinet will be made TO ORDER , according to an individual project in a good carpentry workshop, then the width of the niche can really be made absolutely any, since an individual project is individual. And today’s technologies allow us to operate with any size: 1 meter, 1 meter and 34.5 cm.
The main thing is that later you work very well with the manager in the salon or with the designer in the workshop when preparing the drawings of your Dream cabinet, but more on that a little later.
And my advice: find out in more detail from the potential manufacturer everything about their capabilities. Suddenly they operate with their size range (remember how in cases with kitchen furniture manufacturers - read HERE ), and then you will have to “discuss in advance with the production all the dimensions for the niche for the future cabinet.
Oksana Panteleeva's living room. photo: Dina Alexandrova
If you understand that you are building in FINISHED product, then the width directly depends on the dimensions of the SELECTED cabinet body.
Consider the example of Pax. It is built in very often. The width of PAX is 50 cm. We have bodies either 50 cm or 1 meter. And therefore we understand that our cabinet’s total width can be 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 cm and so on. We make a niche for it according to the manufacturer's instructions. I advise you to add 2-5 mm to the overall width on the sides so that the cabinet stands up easily and does not demolish your new walls along the way.
- From filling and selected doors.
Let’s say you are building a niche and have chosen not cabinet furniture to fill it, but simply shelves, or a system like “boutique hangers.” Those you will not have inside the side walls of the cabinet to which the doors are attached, and you need to think carefully about this unit.
IKEA
DRUMROLL! The time has come to answer the question - WHAT KIND OF DOORS will there be in the closet?
I hope the idea is clear? Now let's illustrate! Let's say we have a niche with these dimensions:
1324 cm width, 45 cm depth and height to the ceiling. We just want to make shelves in this niche that will be attached to the walls of the niche.
And we want to install these shutter doors, which are very popular today:
LEROY MERLIN
You can buy doors in construction hypermarkets, paint them yourself, and even installation is usually not a big problem if everything is prepared in advance.
That's what we're talking about today - preparing the niche and the doorway itself!
Let's see: we chose doors with a width of 494 mm each. There will be 2 doors in our opening, plus mm for hinges, and it turns out that we need to build an opening into the niche exactly 1000 mm wide. Here you make the most difficult decision - to reduce the width of the niche itself or to “complete hangers”, partitions, for installing doors. Let's look:
Advice: always pay attention to the partitions to which you are going to attach furniture doors in the future. The wall material should be fastener-friendly. Most often, if we build niches from plasterboard, then inside I install a “reinforcing wooden block”, to which it is then easy to screw any hinge.
Everything also depends greatly on the fillings of the inner being. If you have ordinary shelves, you can easily mount them to any size that comes to mind. But with a built-in system like ELF or IKEA’s ALGOT, you need to know its size range and strictly go from there. All this will be directly connected to the doors.
Maybe you will do like me - and you will have a niche with a system “like in a boutique”, and instead of doors there are beautiful curtains...
behind the gray curtains we have a large closet
Let's look at examples:
jolsongoude by houzze on Pinterest
HEIGHT.
Well, everything is simple here. Or not very simple... But we will analyze this knot now with examples and illustrations.
Height, as well as width and depth, is a dimension that all depends on the same factors: a ready-made built-in cabinet, a custom-made cabinet, or just a niche with shelves (other filling).
- If you have a ready-made cabinet (take IKEA again), then it is clear that the height of the niche directly depends on the height of the cabinet, plus a small gap for normal installation.
- If the cabinet is custom-made, then make the height of the niche based on the possibilities of the workshop.
- If you have a niche for other filling, and your main task is to correctly install only the doors, then the height of the niche depends on the height of the doors and ease of use. After all, the “ceiling” of such a niche may be higher than the top edge of the door, but answer your question: is it convenient? It would definitely be convenient to stuff the box in there, or would it be better to sew up the excess.
Now about the aesthetic component of height.
First of all, we must focus on the functionality and beauty of the wall. A closet UP TO THE CEILING is wonderful. But don’t forget to correctly calculate the contact of the cabinet doors with the stucco molding, to understand whether there is a need for an indentation between them, and what this indentation should be. Draw a beautiful wall layout, and only then build your DREAM NICHE!
designer Yuri Grishko BonHome Design LLC Designer Anna Clark
So, almost easily and simply, we sorted out the main components of our niches for built-in wardrobes, which are very, very important.
Now let's discuss the technical side.
It's probably no secret to anyone that all surfaces INSIDE a niche should be strictly vertical, and all angles should be strictly 90 degrees?
Can you guess why?
This is because any distortion of the walls in verticals or corners will give you a “light” when installing the cabinet.
Any deviation especially significant from the “norm” will lead to : a change in the size of the cabinet, the inability to install the finished cabinet you chose, unnecessary decorative solutions, the rejection of something that you wanted most, unnecessary side moldings that will have gaps closing, the inability to install Dream doors, etc., etc... And most importantly - additional expenses that you absolutely did not plan for!
Horror? I think it's a nightmare.
Therefore, we check, check and check everything thoroughly again.
a niche awaits a cabinet - from Oksana Panteleeva’s project planning niches for cabinets in the hallway from Oksana Panteleeva’s project “Dusty Pink Story” from the project “Dusty Pink Story” beautiful built-in wardrobe in the bathroom by VVDesign

Layout of a modern hallway
The hallway in an apartment or a separate house can have a very different layout: square with high ceilings, in the form of a long corridor, compact with a transition to the kitchen. Modern style can complement any room features.
The hallway is used to store shoes, outerwear and accessories - hats, scarves, bags, umbrellas. It should have functional areas so that you can dress comfortably before going out, and after returning, put your keys and bag, take off your shoes and put away dirty shoes.
The scheme may include the following zones, starting from the front door:
- near the entrance, organize a place for bags and wet clothes - this can be a floor hanger, a panel with hooks;
- equip a place for changing shoes - a rug, a tray, an ottoman or a mini-chair;
- put a closet for dry outerwear plus a mirror.
The layout of the hallway may be different, especially if we are talking about a modern small-sized hallway
The arrangement should be convenient and rational, taking into account the number of residents, with special attention to children.
Finishing materials
When designing a small-sized corridor, you need to carefully and carefully approach the choice of finishing materials. Another important criterion is the service life and strength of the materials, as well as ease of maintenance.
Another important criterion is the service life and strength of the materials, as well as ease of maintenance.
Walls
Paint is considered the easiest to use, since such walls can be washed. Moreover, you can always update the color, and if you are tired of the colors of the walls, then it is quite easy to paint them in a new tone.
In this case, decorative plaster is suitable
It is easy to clean, but more importantly, it can be used to easily correct or hide wall imperfections
An equally popular material for wall decoration is wallpaper. Experts recommend purchasing vinyl options because they are the densest and can hide minor surface imperfections.
As for the color palette, it should be light. Milky, vanilla, pastel shades are ideal. Interestingly, cool colors make the room visually larger, so gray or light blue walls will look just as good.
But they cannot cover all the walls. It is better to cover one wall with wallpaper with a pattern, and make the rest plain. If you have a square corridor, then the emphasis should be on the end wall. And in the long corridor - at the longest.
For small corridors, the use of large patterns and designs is undesirable; they will attract too much attention and visually narrow the space. But small drawings, on the contrary, will make the interior brighter.
Ceiling
Most often, the ceiling is painted white or beige, or light plaster is used to finish it.
Glossy stretch ceilings in tandem with spotlights will look good. Their shine will make the room look brighter and more spacious.
Flooring
It is important to purchase a durable and strong material for the flooring in the hallway, since this is the most visited room. The material must be moisture resistant, not afraid of dirt and easy to wash
As for the color, it should be neutral.
Laminate or dense linoleum will look good, but the second is inferior to the first in its quality characteristics. An excellent solution would be to use ceramic tiles, since they are moisture resistant, resistant to chemicals and easy to clean.
You can also use stone, it looks noble and rich. However, this material has the highest price.
You can combine two different materials for finishing the floor. Thus, the space near the door is often finished with stone or tiles, and the rest of the floor space is covered with laminate.
To visually enlarge the corridor, you can use stripes. Laminate flooring laid diagonally will look original.
Color spectrum
The color palette of a small hallway should consist of 2-3 shades. Moreover, one will be the main one, and the rest should be used to create small color accents.
Decorating the corridor in white colors will visually enlarge the room. Such a corridor will be the embodiment of cleanliness and order. As for accents, you can use any colors, even the darkest or brightest.
Popular materials for making mezzanines: what is better to choose from a design point of view
The list of materials for making mezzanines is limited.
- Tree. The results are aesthetic and environmentally friendly designs. The disadvantages include the high cost and the need to have woodworking tools when making them yourself. The risk of deformation due to temperature changes is minimal, but the walls must be strong enough to support the weight of the wooden cabinet and its contents.
The space near the entrance door under the ceiling is unoccupied, and placing a decorated wall shelf there will make it useful and decorate the space.
- Drywall. The price of the arrangement will ultimately be relatively low. Suitable for the manufacture of non-standard elements. For example, when the opening is formed by an arch, and its upper part is the facade of a niche. The appearance is quite discreet. With a properly assembled frame, the bottom of the shelf can withstand a lot of weight. The disadvantages include the need for priming, putty and finishing of the structure, so a plasterboard mezzanine should be made in the initial stages of repair.
A double-sided mezzanine can be hung in a long passage; it will have doors on both sides
- Chipboard and MDF have a smooth surface and are inexpensive. It is well suited for the construction of furniture mezzanines, but it can also be used to make stationary ones. A frame is assembled from wooden beams onto which the panel is attached. Installation is possible upon completion of repair work. The material can be used to make individual cabinets that can be hung on the wall anywhere and at any time.
If there is no free space, you should pay attention to sliding models with doors.
How to disguise an electrical panel in the hallway

ALREADY SHARE
During renovations (especially for new buildings), the location of the electrical panel is often changed. Often a special box is installed under it, where all the necessary wires are laid, and the shield itself is installed directly, which often spoils the appearance of the room. In order to hide this object, which clearly does not add attractiveness to the interior, from prying eyes, you will need to make some efforts.
The easiest way to disguise the shield is to cover it with a mirror. A definite plus in this case is that the hallway will visually increase in size. You can also hide the shield behind any painting, panel or travel photo.
If there are cabinets or a chest of drawers in the hallway, you can make a matching door for the electrical panel. Thanks to such simple manipulations, the shield will become an independent decorative detail of the interior.
An excellent solution to the problem could be an open shelving unit made of plasterboard, plastered and painted the same color as the rest of the walls. In this case, the shield is placed in one of the sections of the structure. Additionally, it can be hidden behind books or any of your collections.
Often the electrical panel is installed in a dressing room or wardrobe, leaving access to the door. This option is optimal for spacious hallways; in the case of small-sized apartments, it is not worth forcing the already small spaces.
If the walls in the corridor have decorative plaster or wallpaper, the shield can be disguised as a continuation of the surface. By the way, you can use photo wallpaper that will fit perfectly into the overall picture.
For hallways that are fully or partially decorated with tiles or mosaics, the electrical panel door can be built on the principle of a technical hatch in the bathroom, behind which the water heater and water meters are hidden. In this case, the sash, finished with the same material as the walls, will simply merge with the surface. This “hatch” opens with a light press on both sides.
If a stained glass window is inserted into the interior doors leading into the room, the shield can be used in a similar way, disguised with a stained glass window with LED backlighting. The method, of course, is not cheap, but it is worth it.
For interiors made in Provence or country style, a regular key holder, which must be attached to the panel door, can be a good solution. The dimensions of the structure can be different to suit the required footage. In addition to the fact that the key holder will hide the not very attractive cover of the electrical panel, it is also very convenient. Since the designs are most often very spacious, 5 to 10 large sets of keys can easily be placed inside, and receipts and other small items can be stored on a small shelf.
Over time, you will certainly appreciate the convenience and stop losing your keys before leaving the house and wasting time looking for them. Access to the shield located behind the key holder can be obtained instantly, as soon as necessary.

Where to place a mezzanine in the hallway
The most popular and often the only possible options:
- mezzanine above the front door in the hallway;
Mezzanines can be used as a storage room and placed directly under the ceiling. - above the closet in the hallway;
Thanks to the variety of materials and finishing options, today a mezzanine can also become an interior decoration. - above the entrance from the corridor to the kitchen.
This option can often be found in small apartments where there is no additional space for storing items.
Additional Information! The mezzanine is installed under the ceiling at a height of 2 m from the floor. If the renovation is at the planning stage, it is worth considering the height to which the floor will rise after installation of the covering.
Features of the location of niches in different rooms of the apartment
Familiarize yourself with the peculiarities of the location of the niche in different rooms.
In the living room
Combining a kitchen and living room is the most famous option, since here the dining area fits perfectly into the interior. A full-fledged dining group for 6-8 people is used for it. Location features include:
- the kitchen set is placed along one wall so as not to “eat up” the space with corner structures;
- facades and their shade must correspond to the chosen style of the entire room;
- combining a kitchen and a living room is appropriate in avant-garde, country, loft, minimalism, Scandinavian style, and hi-tech styles.
In black and white
If you want to divide the space, use “airy” partitions - transparent shelves, a bar counter, a blank decorative wall half the height of the ceilings, a screen.
In the hall
In the hallway, the location of a niche is appropriate only in certain situations - if you have a small studio apartment. The following rules are followed here:
- placing a dining group in the hallway is impossible due to the lack of sufficient space;
- the kitchen set is made in the style of minimalism, hi-tech or avant-garde;
- handles are not installed on the facades - a closer device is used to open and close cabinets;
- the color matches the shade of the hallway design;
- place the refrigerator and kitchen units on the same level - large appliances are not allowed to “bulge out”.
Corner kitchen with niche
To avoid the last problem, instead of a standard refrigerator, install an internal model in a cabinet. It is small in size, so it saves additional space in the apartment.
Lighting
As a rule, corridors do not have windows, so it is important to plan the lighting well. They often resort to using spotlights, since one central chandelier will not be enough
Spotlights illuminate the room well; they can be used either in tandem with a large chandelier or separately.
The spots will look beautiful
Moreover, they can be directed to important areas, thereby creating good lighting in the most important areas of the corridor and hiding what you don’t want to attract unnecessary attention to. As for choosing a chandelier, it should not be too big and long
In the corridor you can create additional lighting using wall lamps. Such lamps will become not only an important element of lighting, but also an interesting addition to the design.
Opening mechanism
Not only design, but also functionality depends on the opening mechanism.
- Swing - attached to hinges, quite convenient and practical. Provide full access to the niche.
- Sliding - installed when there is no room for full opening. They cannot provide full access to things.
If the room has enough free space, you can purchase a spacious and functional mezzanine.
- Folding is a very convenient option for a long mezzanine.
- Lifting up - the door opens up on the fittings. The mechanism prevents it from closing under its own weight, which allows you to fully use the width of the opening. Convenient and reliable, but not cheap.
A corner model is ideal for a small hallway.
Note! Don't make the sashes too long. Over time, they can sag on the hinges. You should also pay attention to the choice of a comfortable handle.
Hallway interior in various styles
It may seem that for such small rooms as a corridor, the interior design should not be thought out in any particular style. After all, you won’t even have room to “accelerate”. However, this is not entirely true - you can get the hallway decorated in a separate style motif by using the distinctive features of one direction or another. This year, popular solutions will be:
Loft
You can decorate a corridor in a loft style as follows:
- use brickwork on the walls - you can leave the original one or install a panel with an appropriate coating;
- do not hide wires and sockets;
- as additional lighting, use a lamp similar to a projector;
- color palette: black, gray, brown, white;
- use natural materials - no plastic for furniture or lamps - it is better to choose structures made of metal or wood.
High tech
The modern style, which came to us along with the development of technology, will fit perfectly into the interior of the corridor. To do this you need to follow several rules:
- Color palette – black, white, grey. Bright accents (for example, red) are allowed.
- Materials – metal, plastic, glass. Give preference to glossy finishes.
- You can use posters and lamps as decoration.
Provence
A cozy French style for the hallway, which can be achieved by using light pastel shades in the decoration of the room. A Provence style corridor can be made in mint, soft pink, lemon, blue or lilac tones.
Give preference to furniture made from natural materials. Metal and wood can even be “aged” a little.
Scandinavian style
Minimalist interior style, which is achieved quite simply:
- Use light colors in the decoration of the corridor. It can be light grey, white or blue.
- Add indoor plants or hang posters as decorative elements.
- Lots of light! If there is no window in the hallway, take care of additional lighting.
Also read: Scandinavian style in the interior - minimalism and practicality
Classic style
The classics are relevant, no matter what. Of course, such a luxurious design of the corridor in the apartment is more suitable for large rooms. But you can beat it in a small hallway. To do this use:
- A massive lighting fixture - a crystal or glass chandelier - is an essential attribute of a beautiful corridor in a classic style.
- Natural materials - linen, cotton, wood, glass.
- Warm colors will not only visually enlarge the room, but will also give the hallway a cozy homely atmosphere.
Mezzanine under the ceiling in the hallway. How to make a mezzanine in the corridor with your own hands in a Khrushchev building.
Owners of small apartments in old-style houses built in the distant Soviet years, with the well-known name Khrushchev, when making renovations, are faced with the problem of very narrow corridors.
By making a mezzanine in the hallway with your own hands, a real owner will be able to turn the disadvantage of a small area into creating additional space for various things and saving overall space. The main task is to build a competent and correct structure that will not visually lower the ceiling in the room and will not create inconvenience for its residents. You can also paint the mezzanine the same color as the ceiling, which will create the illusion of matching. It should be noted that a do-it-yourself mezzanine in the hallway is an advantageous offer for people who know how to save their budget. After all, buying additional furniture for an apartment of good quality today is quite expensive.
So, the mezzanine is a small cabinet located under the ceiling. The design includes:
- Shelf - bottom (width - at least 30 cm);
- Doors
In order for the mezzanine to look harmonious in the corridor, it is necessary to place it in a convenient place. An ideal option for renovation would be a mezzanine constructed above the door.
Types of mezzanines are divided into:
- Simple;
- Corner (triangular shape).
Let's look at the step-by-step instructions for building a mezzanine in the hallway, made with your own hands. The whole process will require construction tools: drill, level, wooden blocks measuring 40x40 mm, brackets/metal corners, screws and material for the cabinet.
Step-by-step guide on how to make a mezzanine in the hallway with your own hands:
- Examine the required location in the room for wiring. In this case, a special detector/indicator screwdriver will be useful; otherwise, consider the area of the wall above the switch.
- Decide on the type of mezzanine (with or without doors). The second type will certainly save time and materials.
- Marking the bottom panel and cabinet walls with measuring the height of the mezzanine.
- Using a drill (hammer), make holes for the bottom of the structure.
- Using a building level, install aluminum guides.
- Select the necessary material (plywood or board) and make the bottom. Khrushchev is famous for its uneven walls, so this factor must be taken into account when selecting planks.
- Place the lower structure on the corners, and secure the strips with suitable screws.
- Finish the mezzanine using modern materials (varnish, paint, plastic).
- Next, make a door frame, making it from narrow strips.
- Attach the made box to the walls.
- Attach the doors using piano hinges. You can choose doors if there are different options: sliding (compartment) or regular - hinged. Door material can be used as decoration. Here sheets of chipboard, MDF or pieces of plastic will be an excellent helper.
This simple method will make a narrow corridor in a Khrushchev building comfortable and interesting. The contents in the mezzanine can be of different weights and sizes, the main thing is to think through everything in advance.
Bed in a niche
It will help to create a functional and cozy interior for an apartment in the form of a studio or one-room apartment. An alcove, complemented by drawers for bedding, will allow you to avoid purchasing massive furniture pieces. Built-in bed models:
- Regular fixed beds of small width. They are not removed or folded.
- Transformers are equipped with a lifting or sliding mechanism. For the day, the linen is put away in a drawer or closet, and the bed module is transformed into a table and seats.
Podium bed options have a monolithic ledge on which the mattress is located. Beautifully designed, they have a very aesthetic appearance. Suitable for apartments with a large area.

To unload the room as much as possible, you need to use a horizontal or vertical folding bed. Due to the fact that the outer side of the product matches the color of the cabinet finish, when assembled the model merges with the surrounding surface.

Types of niches in a modern apartment
- Conventionally, niches found in modern interiors are divided into two types:
- Horizontal;
- Vertical.
A horizontal niche is a longitudinal recess in a main or interior wall in the form of a shelf, which mainly performs a decorative function in the overall interior of the room.
Vertical niches can vary significantly, both in their depth and height, and in external type, that is, they can be open, used as a decorative element in an unusual design, or closed. For example, a wardrobe is a closed external niche.
What wallpaper to cover the hallway: design options
One hallway is not like the other. There are narrow, tight ones, there are square ones, there are non-standard ones. This is why you need to “dance.” What is suitable for spacious, bright rooms, for example, cannot always harmoniously blend into the interior of a dark small room and vice versa.
Wallpaper for a small hallway: design and nuances
Light-colored wallpaper will definitely suit such a space. Not necessarily white, there is little practicality in this. Give preference to embossed, structural wallpaper - modern coatings are also practical and easy to clean.
You can visually enlarge a room not only with the help of banal white wallpaper: blue color also has expanding properties
Also, a small hallway welcomes the following ideas:
- Light wallpaper coverings with a simple but elegant gray, gray-green, gray-blue print;
- Types of wallpaper with a pronounced relief, due to which simple neutral colors are played up;
- Faded checkered coverings greatly organize the space.
But for some, the problem is not a small hallway, but a narrow one. What ideas apply here?
Wallpaper design for a narrow hallway
It is logical that the walls in such a space need to be visually expanded. And only after that think through the entire design. In this case, color and light expand the walls.
The problem of a narrow hallway can be solved with the help of glossy mirror wallpaper
Choosing wallpaper for a wide corridor
There are more options here. As for fashion trends 2022, focus on light colors, relief and interesting, unobtrusive decor.

In a wide room, you can not be afraid to use dark colors: they look elegant and truly chic
An example of the design of such a corridor:
- Light walls with baseboards a couple of shades darker;
- Light floor with natural finish;
- Simple but colorful rugs or rugs;
- A painting on the wall or a vase on the chest of drawers, matching the color of the rug;
- A bright interior will be decorated with a couple of bright accessories - a pillow on a pouf, bright flower pots, etc.
And, of course, modern corridors cannot be imagined without high-quality lighting.
Decorating the walls of the hallway
The walls in the hallway, like the floor, are primarily susceptible to heavy contamination. Therefore, we approach the selection of materials with special care. Materials such as:
Dye
An excellent and economical finishing option. Pros: easy cleaning process, low price of material, huge selection of colors. In addition, the use of this material allows you to reach the most difficult areas in the hallway - niches, ledges.
Today, the building materials market offers the following types of paints for interior wall decoration: acrylic, silicone, latex paints.
The disadvantage is the “cold” interior. The coating is very thin, and even with bright colors does not create a feeling of coziness and comfort.
Decorative plaster
For repairs, there are two main types of plaster: smooth without a pattern and material with a relief surface. The absence of joints is noted as an advantage, since the material is applied in a single layer.
Plaster is an environmentally friendly product that is highly breathable. After repairs using this coating, you can not be afraid of dampness and the growth of fungal colonies in the room. Walls after repair are resistant to deformation due to the strength of the coating.
Microcement
Microcement has recently been used for interior decoration. However, it quickly gained popularity when decorating a hallway in art decor style.
A barely noticeable roughness combined with a gray or dark blue tint is a colorful and noticeable design for wide, voluminous hallways.
Wallpaper
Not the best option for decorating walls in a hallway, since almost all wallpaper materials do not absorb moisture well.
Advantages of application: low price, wide choice of colors and textures, preservation of natural air circulation in the room.
However, there are also many disadvantages: they are easy to damage, wet cleaning is not applicable to all types, and they require preparation of the walls before gluing. If you still decide to opt for wallpaper, use liquid wallpaper or quartz models.
Plastic panels
Inexpensive material, many types with imitation of various surfaces, ease of repair and wet cleaning further determine the popularity of the coating and the frequency of choice.
MDF
The panels are perfect for interior decoration of the hallway, combining simplicity of style and excellent color shades. The cost of the material is higher than the price for plastic models, but the quality matches the price.
Decorative stone or imitation brickwork
The “cold style” is combined with a warm room in practice, since the material is made of gypsum blocks. An excellent design idea is to decorate only one wall with artificial stone, and the set is located on the opposite side.
Ceramic tile
The advantages of using it in hallway decoration are a unique glossy shine, resistance to damage, and the possibility of wet cleaning. In addition, the construction market offers a huge selection of styles and colors.
Closet
The main advantage of a small hallway with a wardrobe is the variety of design solutions and sizes of furniture structures. By using sliding doors, you can save free space, and in terms of practicality, such doors are not inferior to other options. For a cramped hall, this is the most successful solution.
You can create such a design, guided by your own ideas. If there is a niche, the design can be supplemented with a built-in wardrobe. Due to the progress of the latest technologies, wardrobes are made from various materials.
Most often, wood, plastic, glass, bamboo or rattan material is used for decoration and the base of the product.
Niche lighting
In order to create a successful niche, it is important not only to equip it correctly, but also to install proper lighting.
If you properly think through the lighting of a niche in the hallway, you can easily get an excellent design solution.
Most often, halogen lamps are installed, which allow the opening to be well illuminated. However, it is best to entrust the design of niche lighting to a professional designer.
Before lighting a niche in the hallway, you need to think about communications. Everything needed to connect the lamps should be nearby. This is required in order not to break the walls.
Another popular option is diffused light using incandescent lamps. They are hidden behind special frosted glass that helps disperse light beams.
Design ideas
To fit the structure correctly, you need to place it successfully and arrange it accordingly. The decoration is carried out in the same style with the overall design of the room.
On narrow structures, it would be a good idea to place collectibles, family photographs, vases, figurines, and candles. Closed recesses are best suited for storing clothes, bags and shoes.
Use to place a TV and other equipment. You can easily hide wires and cables and effectively zone the space.

The shallow structure is used as a decorative element. Paintings, panels and frescoes are placed in it. If you equip the lighting correctly and place a flowerpot or figurine on the ledge, you can make an unusual and spectacular art object out of the recess.

Niche processing:
Place wallpaper or photo wallpaper inside
An alternative to a wall picture, but at the same time you can also put flowers or decorative ornaments on the bottom of the niche.
Paint the inside surface
The surface of the niche can be painted in the color of the walls (in this case, the niche fits harmoniously into the wall and does not particularly stand out) or in a contrasting color (focuses attention on itself).
A graphic drawing on the wall or an inscription in a beautiful font will decorate a niche and, accordingly, the entire room.
Another option is to apply a special paint that you can use with chalk. This will keep the kids happy, giving them the opportunity to draw on the walls (without getting cursed at), and you can leave notes (one that should definitely be noticed and read).
Lay out decorative stone
At the same time, take into account the balance of styles in the apartment.
Make a frame for a niche
This will help better highlight the niche on the wall and make it more noticeable.
Place shelves or cabinet
Shelves give the niche practicality and functionality. Of course, it all depends on the depth of the niche and their size: the niche may remain decorative, but more things can still be placed there. In a deep niche you can arrange a bookcase or even a full-fledged closet for things.
Place a mirror
By placing the mirror in a niche, you will definitely reduce the likelihood of breaking it by accidentally catching it with your hand. In this case, it is better to add additional lighting so that you can clearly see your reflection in it.
Upholstery and seat
A cozy soft corner for a pleasant tea or reading.
Niche lighting
Additional wall decor and emphasis on things in the niche. If there is a mirror in the niche, it will be easier to use.
Now that we have looked at ideas for using niches, I propose to move from theory to action and, with the help of the following master classes, try to arrange a beautiful and neat niche.
Design features
The design can be the most original, and now excellent solutions have been developed even for a very small hallway. There may only be enough space for a hanger and a single shelf for hats, but even such an area should be decorated elegantly. To maintain convenience and express your design idea, you need to put all your clothes in the closet. It is recommended to choose furniture with sliding doors and a mirror on them (it allows you to save a lot of valuable space).
In an apartment, it is worth separating the rooms from the hallway with doors with transparent glass inserts; this will help add more light to the darkened space. When the available area is limited to 4 square meters, this is very bad, but the problem is completely solvable.
You can resort to redevelopment or try to visually increase the space by choosing the right furniture. The walls are covered with paint (this is the most space-saving coating), but in no case white, it is too easily soiled.
The hall is carefully measured and furniture and decorative elements are purchased, and the design is thought through only based on the measurement results. In private houses it is recommended to use linoleum and tiles, but otherwise there will be no special differences from apartments.
Modern ideas are aimed, first of all, at not “breaking” the original configuration of the corridor, but at using it as efficiently as possible.

Or if you nevertheless make a choice in favor of a special style, you need to introduce elements that visually and logically connect different rooms. It is recommended to use mirrors and artistic canvases for this.
Modern design of corridors with an area of 8 square meters. m or any other is subject, first of all, to considerations of practicality and functionality; they dominate external elegance, although they do not cancel it completely.
Think about whether it will be convenient to clean up the room, and whether maintaining cleanliness and shine will become too tedious. Preferred materials and designs are those that retain their practical qualities and appearance for a long time, even with constant contact with moisture.
It is advisable to choose a flooring that is as strong and stable as possible. Any modern approach (not just minimalism) is aimed at expressing a general stylistic idea using the least amount of decorative elements.
Simple and complex ceiling in the hallway
I have already written about creating the hallway interior. The design there is done mainly by furniture, not decoration. Now let's sort out the ceilings.
Simple ceiling design
The main idea is that design is perceived as a whole, and not as individual elements. It is absolutely not necessary to spend a lot of money on ceilings, walls and furniture to get a stylish interior. Decoration is primarily a background; it should not compete for attention with accents. This is why the best ceiling design is simple .
In most standard small hallways, you can’t think of anything better than a smooth white matte ceiling. This can be achieved in 3 ways:
- Stretch ceiling
- From plasterboard
- Prepared and painted
Stretch ceiling is the cheapest and fastest. If there are doors or arches at the beginning and end of the corridor, i.e. the ceiling plane ends there and does not go into the next room, then this option has practically no downsides.
In a small hallway area, it will not have joints, and it will be possible to distinguish it from the painted surface only by the edging along the perimeter. At the same time, you should always choose a matte stretch ceiling, well, in extreme cases, satin, in no case gloss - this is the last century and the collective farm! There are exceptions, but this is always a risk. Correct stretch ceilings:
Forget about the existence of glossy ceilings. Actually, forget it completely.
If the ceiling plane is still shared with adjacent rooms, and you don’t want to see the joint, then you’ll have to fork out for other options. Drywall is better than simply painted in all respects except price. Many people are afraid that plasterboard ceilings reduce the height of the room. If you want, you can lower the ceiling by only 4-5 cm, you won’t even notice it. But all the wiring can be routed along the top, plus plasterboard ceilings are less likely to crack, because There is a buffer zone made of profiles between the concrete floor slabs and the finishing part.
But this is all lyrics. Here's a photo of stylish simple ceilings. It turns out that to be cool, you don’t have to make ten levels, a million LED strips and gloss, who would have thought.
Beautiful examples in the interior
When planning the design of one or more niches in your apartment, you can use ready-made examples as sources of inspiration.
Shelves in the bedroom
There should be nothing unnecessary in the recreation room. Therefore, niches in the bedroom, as a rule, are used to store necessary things. For the convenience of the apartment owners, the space above the bed can be filled with books, scented candles and drawers for storing cosmetics and other small items.
Open corners
Horizontal open niches will look great in the hallway or living room. To emphasize the selected area, shelves in a bright room should be finished with dark wood. They are suitable for storing a large number of things. But so that the room does not seem smaller, you should not clutter them too much.
Decorative shelves in the living room
To make the room visually seem spacious, niches should not be highlighted in a dark color. The living room, decorated in white, looks modern and stylish.
Thematic decorative elements will help create a cozy atmosphere in the room. A stylish, functional firewood rack will look beautiful next to an artificial or real fireplace.
Wardrobe
If there is enough space in the apartment, a niche in the room can be equipped as a dressing room. Made in light colors, it will fit perfectly into the interior. There is enough space for both outerwear hangers and drawers and shelves for shoes. This alternative to cabinets can be placed not only in the bedroom, but also in the hallway.
Mini bar
Shelves with a collection of alcoholic drinks will also look good in a niche. They can be placed in a niche that occupies the entire free wall. For convenience, shelves should be combined with closed cabinets. You can place beautiful glasses and bottles on top. Below there is a place for the rest of the dishes and household items.
An empty niche is a great place to realize your creative fantasies. The main thing is to use it wisely and do not forget to beautifully decorate even the most ordinary shelves.
Master class: DIY niche frame
There is no point in inserting any cabinet or shelves into a very narrow niche; they simply won’t fit there. The options for covering the back wall are also narrowing; it should be thin so as not to narrow the already shallow niche. Therefore, in this case, paint or wallpaper is used.
BEFORE PHOTO (niche before processing:)
This niche had already been covered with structured wallpaper; the only question that remained was how else it could be refined. And the frame is a wonderful way out of the situation .
Since the door frame and baseboards are made in the same style and painted white, the decision to make the frame for the niche the same came naturally.
AFTER (Niche after treatment):
Necessary materials:
- 2 boards 9 cm wide and 114 cm long (for the inner sides of the frame)
- 2 boards 9 cm wide and 117 cm long (for the outer side parts of the frame)
- 2 boards 9 cm wide and 97 cm long (for the inner top and bottom of the frame)
- 2 boards 13 cm wide and 112 cm long (for the outer top and bottom parts of the frame)
- Wood glue
- Hidden dowels
- Screws
- Drill
- Sandpaper
- Paint and brush
Pine boards were used here.
Make the measurements based on the size of the niche in your apartment.
- The outer side boards and the inner top and bottom boards must be exactly the size of the niche;
- the inner side boards must be smaller than the size of the niche by the width of the boards so that the folded frame fits into the niche.
Niche in the bedroom
Useful tips on how to beautifully design and decorate a niche in the bedroom - a room for sleeping and relaxing.
Alcove bed
A sleeping place in an alcove is a design move that makes the atmosphere even more cozy and enveloping. This technique is also one of the best ways to isolate the bedroom area in a studio or room with several functions (for example, in a bedroom-living room).
Bed in a niche
Instead of a bedside table
Arranging a niche in the wall is a real boon for owners of a tiny bedroom. Such a functional element can replace a bedside table or even an entire shelving unit - and at the same time it will not actually take up space or disrupt the ergonomics of the space.
Niche instead of a bedside table
Dressing table
It seems that such a secluded place as an alcove in the bedroom was literally created to accommodate a dressing table. The main thing is to provide high-quality lighting.
How to use a niche in the hallway
Of course, the hallway does not have as many functional requirements as the kitchen or living room. But here, too, a niche in the wall will not be superfluous.
No household appliances are required here, and you can’t install furniture like a sofa. But the place to store things is just right here, so the best solution is a wardrobe in a niche.
This option has many advantages:
When installing a wardrobe in a built-in niche in the hallway, a specialist carefully measures everything. Thanks to this, the wardrobe fits tightly to all the walls in the niche. This is a guarantee of clean furniture.
The built-in wardrobe looks like a continuation of the wall and at the same time you can store even bulky winter items in it without difficulty. This way you will have a whole dressing room in a niche in the hallway.
Most built-in cabinets do not have back or sides. This allows you to save a lot of money on cabinet furniture.
When you decide to make a wardrobe in a niche in the hallway wall, you get a unique opportunity to customize the functionality of the furniture depending on your own preferences.
For example, install a large number of drawers for small items or shelves for shoes, as well as hooks and hangers for clothes.
Well, thanks to this piece of furniture, a lot of space in the hallway is saved. And if you make the doors mirrored, then two functions are added at once.
First of all, a full-length mirror in the hallway never hurts. And, secondly, the room is visually enlarged, reflected in the mirrors.
