Main features of the classic style
The modern idea of classics does not imply excessive luxury and a large number of decorative elements. This concept has now been somewhat expanded and is expressed in several different variants:
- Antique flavor;
- European history of past centuries;
- National styles.
From the presented photos of bathtubs in a classic style, it is easy to determine that in a modern interpretation, designers offer a combination of the main features of different directions, allowing to implement interesting solutions.
In a classic interior, the center of the composition is always determined. In the bathroom, this function is performed directly by the bathtub, the installation and decoration of which requires more space.
Classic style tends more towards symmetrical arrangement and geometric order. Also, a classic interior requires high-quality furniture and materials of natural origin.
Accessories and lighting
Decorative elements in the bathroom are simply necessary. Paintings, vases, and figurines create a palace atmosphere of luxury and grace. If the room has a window, it is draped with roller blinds or Roman blinds. Their color is matched to the walls.

Choosing furniture for a classic style
To choose the right bathroom furniture in a classic style, you need to take into account some of its features: furnishing elements, as a rule, are made from natural materials.
- These are precious types of wood, thanks to which the products look especially elegant and presentable.
- This is a natural or artificial stone that is an exact imitation of marble or granite and creates a noble, classic image.
- Mirrors in solid frames and intricate shapes are considered an excellent addition to furniture.
It is possible to use various shelves that serve as a place for arranging accessories and souvenirs.
Quality Standards
Let's begin our review of the range of ceramic tiles by considering the quality criteria that are regulated by state standards. Tile is produced in three main ways:
- Casting. Thick ceramic tiles are made using casting; their surface is not perfectly smooth. This option is not suitable for finishing a bathroom, since dirt and harmful microorganisms accumulate in the uneven tiles, which makes it difficult to keep the walls and floor clean;
- Extrusion. Most modern bathroom tiles are produced this way. The tiles produced by extrusion are even, smooth, with ideal corner geometry and uniform thickness;
- Pressing. Pressed ceramic tiles are characterized by increased strength and low porosity. These qualities make it an excellent option for flooring.
Tiles are produced in five strength classes from PEI I to PEIV, the higher the class of the tile, the greater its strength and wear resistance; tiles of class I or II are used to decorate the bathroom.
All the necessary information about the characteristics of the tile you like is contained on its packaging; it is presented in a graphic code:
- The snowflake represents resistance to low temperatures;
- A hand on a dark background says the tiles are for walls;
- A foot on a dark background means it is a floor tile;
- The flask is a sign of resistance to aggressive chemical compounds;
- Crystal – degree of hardness;
- The letters AA are the moisture resistance class; the second letter of the coding is closer to the end of the alphabet, the worse the tile is protected from water.
Classic bath
The most interesting option may be a brass or cast iron product with bent curly legs.
- In spacious rooms, bathtubs of this type are installed in the center of the room, creating a truly royal interior.
- The container can also be placed on a special pedestal or in a bay window niche.
A modern jacuzzi will harmoniously fit into a classic interior if you decorate it with a decorative screen.
Washbasin in classic style
An elegant faience or porcelain tulip with a column-style leg and a painted inner surface can appear as a sink in a classic-style bathroom.
In large rooms, a traditional cabinet with a table top made of marble or artificial stone is usually installed.
Types of ceramic tiles
There are two types of tile materials:
1. Wall-mounted - designed for finishing walls in the bathroom. Thanks to its rather soft structure, it cuts perfectly, which provides an excellent opportunity to customize products when installing plumbing fixtures.
2. Floor - resistant to abrasion, characterized by a low degree of water absorption, and has a more dense structure.
Today there are five classes of floor tiles:
- first class - used in rooms where there is low traffic and no shoes are used;
- second class - used in premises where there is not a very high traffic density (apartments, cottages);
- third class - such tiles are used to cover floors that do not have access from the street;
- fourth class - used for finishing floors in general purpose buildings;
- fifth class - used for cladding various types of premises.
Thus, the difference between floor tiles and those created for wall cladding is as follows:
- it is inert to chemical media;
- designed for high friction loads;
- has excellent resistance to pressure and shock;
- more wear-resistant and durable;
- thickness 9-12 mm.
Types of tiles, which are classified by type and method of production:
Clinker is a tile that is obtained by mixing high-quality materials with dyes and clay using the extrusion method. Such products have a variety of geometric shapes, are resistant to temperature changes and do not require special care. Bicottura is an enameled tile that has been double fired and pressed. In this case, the material has low strength and is used as small decorative elements. Monocottura is an enameled tile that has been fired once and pressed. It has excellent wear resistance and strength, and can be used for decorating floors and walls. Monoporosa is a tile that has been fired once, pressed and coated with a special glaze.
It is used for additional decoration and is installed with extreme care.
Bathroom tile design
When choosing tiles, the consumer is almost always guided by personal preferences, but today it is possible to identify general trends that suggest the most successful design using a given material. So, for example, the classic version, in which preference is given to pastel colors, never goes out of fashion and does not get boring for a long time. On the contrary, there are bright shades of orange, green or yellow, which have a stimulating effect on the psyche and irritate the perception.
As for size, large tiles complemented by a pattern with repeating elements look great in a large bathroom. In addition, it can visually enlarge the space, so it is sometimes used in medium-sized rooms. Small tiles go well with other building materials in spacious or medium-sized bathrooms. For small spaces, it is best to use medium-sized products.
Stylized faucets
Plumbing manufacturers present a huge number of different models of taps and shower heads, including antique-style products.
More expensive faucet options are made of bronze and have a curved shape and intricate valves. Stainless steel products coated with gold paint look interesting.

Decorating a living space always starts with the bathrooms. This is labor-intensive and wasteful, noisy and the most expensive.
Having every reason to start renovating the bathroom, the user becomes a victim of countless views of fashion catalogs and visits to construction markets, long thoughts, tossing and doubts. And given the diversity offered by the modern market of finishing materials, the search for standard tiles and equipment may take much longer than originally planned. In order to choose the appropriate color, texture, shape and performance characteristics, you need to understand the basic principles of the influence of tiles on the appearance and functionality of the bathroom.
Color features of a classic bathroom
A characteristic feature of a classic-style bathroom interior is a pastel range of shades. It is she who emphasizes the naturalness of natural finishing materials and furnishings.
The most common colors of classic interior solutions:
- Pearl mother of pearl;
- Light beige;
- White;
- Various shades of brown;
- Golden;
- Black.
Noble, muted tones make the atmosphere strict and respectable. When decorating a classic bathroom, you should not use bright, saturated colors. In small quantities, the presence of blue, lilac or green malachite shades is acceptable, creating a special atmosphere of palace luxury.
How to choose ceramic tiles
As you know, there are two main types of tiles: floor and wall. Manufacturers often offer collections in which both types are created within a related palette or contain the same pattern. They come with a plinth and frieze that are ideal for this design. This approach allows the consumer to implement a thematic design or use matching tones without unnecessary hassle.
On each tile package, the manufacturer places pictograms, which, according to the international system of standards, are the marking of the material
This designation will help you select the main characteristics, and the consumer should pay attention to:
- tile size;
- segment shape;
- integrity (implies the absence of chips and cracks on the surface);
- surface resistance to abrasion;
- thermal resistance;
- resistance to mechanical damage: scratches and chips;
- moisture resistance;
- resistance to the use of chemical reagents;
- pigment durability: no reaction to ultraviolet radiation and loss of color over time;
- durability;
- no risks associated with slippery surfaces.
These parameters are the alpha and omega for each consumer. And in order to visually check the quality of the tiles, you should select several samples from the box in random order and lean them against each other side by side, alternately changing sides.
To choose the optimal safety qualities, in particular, the absence of slipping on the floor, you can use one simple method. Without waiting for the tiles to be laid on the floor, you can drop a little water onto the surface right on the display case. By the intensity of your finger sliding, you can always determine how the material behaves in everyday conditions.
Floor tiles have a whole list of differences from other materials. With its help, they not only create a perfectly smooth surface, but also “cut out” it at all corners and asymmetrical joints. To do this, it must be easy to process and install in places with architectural “features”. The ideal indicator of water absorption is considered to be 20%, and the enamel should cover the surface completely in order to prevent the destructive effects of detergents and mechanical stress. In places where the contact of the wall with water is the closest, it is recommended to lay large glazed tiles, this way the number of seams - weak areas in a humid environment - will be reduced. The optimal tile thickness is 6-9 mm, this figure corresponds to the generally accepted standard.

Decoration Materials
The best option for finishing a room with high humidity is tile materials. Porcelain tiles imitating natural stone and glossy ceramic tiles for a bathroom in a classic style look expensive and noble.
Of particular interest is the finishing with decorative plaster and moisture-resistant wallpaper with a pattern in the form of stripes or ornate patterns. A combination of materials is often used. For example, from below to half of the wall there may be tiles or panels, and above - wallpaper or plaster.
Classic interior design is usually complemented by stucco molding: rosettes, bas-reliefs, cornices. It is better to finish the ceiling in such a bathroom with whitewash or matte acrylic paint.
Features of tiles

Methods of heat treatment of tiles
How to choose tiles for the floor, walls and ceiling in the bathroom? What do you need to know about heat treatment of tiles?
There are two categories:
- single firing;
- double firing.
- Single firing (monocoturra) - the glaze is applied to wet clay, then the tile is placed in the oven, as a result the base and glaze are fired simultaneously. When firing occurs, these two components are very tightly soldered to each other and the tile turns out to be quite durable.
- Double firing (bicoturra) - first the base is placed in the oven, then the glaze is applied. The tiles are then re-fired at a lower temperature, resulting in a smooth and shiny glaze with bright, rich colors.
- The number of firings is indicated on the packaging with a special symbol - a flame petal with a number drawn next to it.

Lighting for a classic bathroom
Properly arranged lighting plays an important role in creating a classic bathroom interior. The main lighting function is performed by a small traditional glass or crystal chandelier. In full-sized apartments, this can be a multi-tier or multi-arm product that brightly illuminates the room.
Wall sconces are used as an additional light source, located near the mirror in the washroom and makeup areas. Usually there are two lamps - symmetry is mandatory for classics.
Decor elements and accessories
To harmoniously complete the image of a stylish bathroom, you should use interesting details in the form of traditional accessories and original decorative elements:
- Protective curtain;
- Rug;
- Towels;
- Paintings;
- Vases;
- Wash accessories.
To create a harmonious atmosphere in a classic style, you need to pay special attention to the quality of materials and their design.
Textiles should be dense and match the color scheme of the interior. Patterns and designs are acceptable.
The shape and design of toiletries remains traditional. For them, white or gold plating is preferred. The walls of large bathrooms can be decorated with paintings.
A classic bathroom always has a stylish, elegant and expensive look. This design is ideal for spacious rooms, but small bathrooms can also be styled as classics by removing some too noticeable details.
Expert advice on choosing bathroom tiles
Expert advice in the field of renovation and design will help you choose tiles for finishing the walls or floors in the bathroom.
- The optimal solution for finishing a bathroom would be to use porcelain tiles with a stone or wood finish for the floor and tiles for the walls. Porcelain stoneware is a more durable material, has optimal moisture absorption and is resistant to any impact loads, so it is ideal for floor repairs.
- It is not recommended to select tiles for renovation online. Experts advise viewing each sample in person, since only in this way can you fully evaluate the geometry of the design, the type of edges, color rendition and other important characteristics that ultimately determine the completeness of the artistic image and the integrity of the interior.
- To determine the effectiveness of joining and seaming, as well as the evenness of the edges of the finishing material, you need to take two tiles and press them tightly against each other. They must match perfectly in size and not form air pockets.
- To create a spectacular “natural” interior, it is better to choose matte and semi-matte tiles. It looks better than glazed products, but has a significant drawback - it is more difficult to wash off stains. Glossy tiles are easier to clean, but they are very susceptible to any impact, so fingerprints and stains from water and detergents often remain on such tiles.
- The ideal solution for better visual perception is to purchase seamless tiles. Previously, such tiles were produced only by well-known companies whose products were in the above-average price category, but now similar products can be found in budget brands.
For the tiles, do not forget to purchase grout for joints and special glue with high adhesive properties.
